unless you want the extra memory I would wait for the 6000 series.

  • Ok, this seems pretty awesome - not sure about whether it's a bargain or not (very expensive, only 1 available), but still. I would have liked a bigger picture on your website for me to perv on too - I can barely make anything out :(

holy **** for a dear vid card!?

    MOD - LANGUAGE

    • Probably about the same price in real terms as a CGA card back in 1981.
Maybe Shaw is doing one of those "Price Rollback" promotions?

  • +1

Use to be able to buy 2 3dfx Voodoo2 cards for that price :)

  • lol and it's not even a 5970!

    • It's slightly faster than a 5970. It's 2x complete 5870 gpus on one card.

  • I wonder if you can crossfire these… Otherwise isn't it cheaper to get two 5870s? (or two of pretty much anything else?)

  • I would rather spent my money on L lenses and worry free if it will depreciate in the next couple of months

  • +1

OR, you could save yourself $619 and buy 2x 5870s, if you need to you could still buy a new motherboard that supports crossfire, a new PSU and still be in front. Which will give you essentially the same performance. Not much of a 'bargain', more like RRP.

Don't get sucked in to the 'Limited Edition, suit case packaged' marketing. It will be obsolete within a few months, or whenever the new Radeon 6800 series comes out.

    • It could still be good for those who only have the one PCIe slot and really want to make the most out of their uATX or other smaller arrangements. $1.5k is still a lot of money though. =.=

      • +1

can this even fit into a uATX case?

        • I think it'd be doable for the better-built ones. The nicer ones have removable hard drive cages etc.

      • +1

I think it would be smarter to go with a 5970 in that case.

Not sure the -ve is really warranted. The price for this item is the cheapest online, even if the product itself is over-rated.

However, I do agree with the idea of this card being ridiculous, but there are people out there who must have the very best, so products like this will always exist.

It's the same as the extreme edition CPU's and such. Most people know that paying $1.5k for a CPU won't give you a massive increase over a $500 part, yet they still sell.

        • I do agree, but it's not the best anymore, and not the cheapest on Staticice.com.au. I just don't class a $1500 video card a bargain.

          • @shaun-o: It is the cheapest on static ice by $70.

            • @ozhunter: I stand corrected, my mistake. Neg revoked.

            • +1

@ozhunter: For almost any other deal on this site $70 cheaper would be a massive deal, but when you're paying $1500 for a graphics card, it seems a bit stingy! haha

      • people in that situation probably cudnt afford this in the first place

  • +1

they didn't even include free games…

Great way for young singles with high disposable income to blow cash.
It's ok, you'll get $300 for it second hand in 12 months.

    • Should be thankful toward those who spend big on cutting edge stuff. They subsidise the rest of us who wait for price drops or purchase lower-end parts.

      • +1

Is it truly subsidising though? From at I've heard most of the sales manufacturers get is from middle and low range products, not top end stuff like this which command only a very small segment of the market

        • Its subsidizing because its a high profit item for the company - helping the company stay afloat. The quicker they make back the money spent on R&D and the fabrication facilities (Which cost in the BILLIONS) Then they can spend more effort/time reducing prices and/or bringing in new products.

Yes most of the profits are made in the middle range products, but the high end products have the highest profit margin - and the chips come out the same fab - they are just binned different.

          • @voter1: I'm sorry, i have to agree with Roja.
            This is not subsidising.
There are 10 of these wanky things in Australia.
It's simply not enough to subsidise anything.

It's simple supply and demand all the way through.

A new product launches, yields are low, demand is high, thus prices are high.
When yields improve and demand drops prices drop.
The % margin would not change a lot through a products life cycle.

I have not beef against people parting with hard earned to buy high end gear, but this kinda product is just taking advantage of those who part with their cash too easily.

To spend $1400 on a gfx card now and get the best performance is nice.
But i think you'd be better off buying a new $400 card every 6-12 months, you'd spend a little less and have a card faster than this in 2 years time.

  • +1

i could buy a new PC with that money 0_o

    • +1

      Two actually! ;)

  • I'd buy it but I can't handle having to sound like I'm supporting the dockers ;-). Perhaps I'll pay full price instead.

  • +1

For the $1500 you also get a gold paque with 'get a life boofhead" on it for spending that much on a freakin video card! LOL

    • And for free you can award yourself the jealous loser of the year!

      • +1

LOL. You'd have to have more dollars than cents to buy it. Boom-tish.

  • +1

Crikey, $1500+ for a video card just for gaming.

Why does in come in a hard lockable camera case, as if one would unplug the card and go places with it?

Could it be simply a way to convince potential buyers that they are getting their money's worth (even though they would never use it)?

    • +5

Why does in come in a hard lockable camera case

That's to transport the cash you're gonna need for the next upgrade! ;)

  • Now ONLY $1399 - so affordable!
