[PC - GOG] Eador Genesis Free

1090

Another freebie from GoG (and no you don't need to own it on Steam for this freebie). Eador Genesis is a turn based strategy game along the lines of Heroes of Might and Magic, Age of Wonders, Sid Meier's Civilization and Warlords.

hahahah. You wish you could get a free one from them…!

    • that would be Electronic Arts, the old guard when it comes to screwing people over.

I love HOMM and AOW. I'll get this. Though I don't have time to play these 4X TBS games anymore. But I'll always have a soft spot for them.

I didn't even play HOMM7, and I needed to use Cheat codes to beat HOMM6 because it was so hard and time consuming.

    • HOMM lost its soul after HOMM IV, (or III many would argue)!

Yeah I'd say 4 was by far the worst in the series. It was the last made by NWC also.

My favorite were 2 and 3, and I only briefly played 1. 5 was pretty good since it went back to doing what made 3 great. I'm not sure what stopped me from loving it. Might have been the European developer effect (they aren't good at cutscenes, scripts and voice acting), or maybe the change from hex based combat to squares that I never got over. Or maybe I was just in a different place in my life and no longer able to enjoy these kind of games as much as I used to.

6 would have been good if not for the extreme difficulty and the fact you needed to rush if you didn't want to run into an unbeatable final army and waste 20 hours of your time playing that one map. I think this game ended up taking me 80 hours or more, and that is with cheat codes. I would never have beaten it. I thought Academy was OP, and Sanctuary was very underwhelming. Also, the loss of a traditional town screen hurt. But a lot of things this game did I appreciated. The domain system in particular (no need to retake that mine the AI took as long as you still own the main town in the area), and I like how you can recruit all available troops from every town in a single town as long as it's the same type.

7 I never played despite buying it. It got bad rap and I never got around to it. Not sure if it fixes the difficulty issues of 6.

Age of Wonders on the other hand has remained great. It helps that the series was heavily inspired by Master of Magic which is still my favorite 4X game of all time.

        • I have fond memories tricking the predictable HOMM2 AI, just bait them with an unguarded castle and their heroes will always come running to claim it. If you march towards it and it ran off, you 100% know they're weaker. Rinse and repeat until their boss heroes are available for you to hire :)

80 hours, damn thats dedication. I never got very far from the first HM:V mission
Try HOMM3 HD if you haven't, its the bomb, it made organising your town and army much easier, as well as ability to hire specific heroes (free chain lightning, yes'll ill have you kthx). I never finished the Shadow of Death without a save editor, hated how the game forced me to beat the heroes I made earlier in the chained campaign. The habit of stocking up all level 5 spells @ the end of each map came to bite me, hard :(

no need to retake that mine the AI took

Thats an entirely fair play by the AI, said no one ever :P

        • @payton: Oh wow. I didn't play Shadow of Death, but I have similar habits to you. Any hero that carries over, I beef up with everything I can give him/her. Looks like that came back to bite you when they threw you a curveball! I wasn't expecting that myself.

I own HOMM3 HD, but really haven't got time to replay them. :(

These days I prefer to play shorter games.
