Any reason why I shouldn't put this into my PC and fill it with video files to output to TV IRT it being a NAS drive? Will 5400rpm affect large video files? I hear WD black are noisy and blue's also are 5400rpm's. Not sure which to get for PC. I have so much success with older WD drives and none with Seagate drives I wish to stick with WD.
    Thanks.

Not really, WD Red drives are widely used in media servers and WD Blacks are more audible due to their RPM being 7,200.

Care to link the sub $400 8TB SSD?

        • +6

Find me even a sub $1k 8tb SSD

        • +7

@fruit: How about just find a 8tb SSD that exists…

          @MissKitty:

8T and 16T SSDs are shipping in the enterprise space now. they cost a fortune and are primarily aimed at database acceleration or caching for very large storage arrays (petabytes).

If you have a chat with your enterprise vendor you'd also find they have a roadmap for 64/128T SSDs coming…

        • +1

Buying SSDs for multimedia storage is a huge waste of money

      • your PC can be a media server so yes you can use it in your PC. Just more convenient in a box sitting on the network so you can use and reboot your pc without other devices losing access to shared files.

Can't see why not. I have a WD Black in my Gaming PC and it's not particularly loud. The AMD Video card probably drowns it out with the jet engine fan though.

I have 2 8TB WD Reds in my media server (Shucked from a MyBook Duo) and find that they have a bit of a "thump" when the heads stop. Can be noticeably heard in a quiet room. My lower capacity WD Reds don't exhibit this issue.

WD Reds are good for "Write Once Read Many" so you can get away with shoving it into a desktop as a media storage drive (I wouldn't put OS or applications onto it) They won't perform well under high IO.

I reckon those Black drives were awful, had 3 6tbs for a while, very annoying pitch and quite clicky too. But they obviously serve a different purpose.

Not to say the Reds are great, but it's not the worst sound IMO.

        • Maybe I got lucky haha. I've had a 2TB Black for years now, hasn't skipped a beat and most of my games are stored on it.

        • @Cozza38:

Very good for that, don't get me wrong :)

        • If your drive was clicking that means the head was failing. Nothing to do with the speed.

        • +1

          @potplanty:

They were 3 brand new drives, nothing was wrong with them. They have a very noisy and characteristic write sound. Clicky may not be the best word for it, but it't not far off.

        • @scuderiarmani: Bathtub curve

    • Should work fine. I'd still use a SSD as the boot drive for performance reasons, media on the 3.5". Should work a treat.

Appears to be limited to 1 unit, oh well.

    • Yeah, sucks. Was gonna buy a couple. ='(

      • +7

Sorta defeats the purpose of NAS drives that are designed to be put into RAID

        • Damn. Okay for a single slot NAS with separate backup I guess.

        • yep I have been waiting for this drop a while, and am ready to buy 2 or 3, but now am not sure….

      • Yeah I bought 1 but yeah limited to one per account now.

  • If you have a problem with the drive, do you have to send back to Amazon us or can you send it to a local Western Digital fixer place?

    • You can either send the drive back to Amazon or contact WD Directly to transfer the warranty into the AU region.

I've never done a warranty transfer before but it's apparently fairly easy.

If you have an issue you'll have to mail it regardless.

      • Sweet thanks.
        Think I'll grab one then

  • Hello all !

I don't have a stand alone NAS device, but I'll be using an old PC as a media server, which will be left on 24/7 (almost).
Is the RED drive the right one to purchase for this purpose compared to using the hard drive from this external storage
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/302672

    Cheers !!

    • Yes, that Seagate is the last drive you'd want. Extremely slow write speeds, I had several myself and promptly got rid of them. They also aren't recommended for 24/7 operation, more as cold storage backups.

      • So no go for this offer for use as a secondary storage device?

I have 3D libraries (materials, shaders etc) that are huge and want to store the content there.

        • For regular operating, the red drive is the most ideal.

  • Bought a few of the WD 8TB externals $179US they have RED's with modified firmware (reflash drives), Much faster than the seagate 8TB Archive Drives I already use

    • Any idea why the firmware is modified on those drives?

    • How do you cross flash it to be 'red' drive?

      • apparently, it's not easily done (I am researching atm). Better just to turn on TLER (once TLER is turned on they are suitable for NAS)
Drive inside is WD80EZZX-11CSGA0 and performance is great, especially compared to the 2x 8TB Seagate shingle drives

        • I picked up 2 WD EasyStore 8Tb externals in the US last week at US$179 each. Inside are the WD80EFZX-68UW8N0 Red NAS drives. Would these be good to go straight into a NAS, or do I need to make sure TLER is turned on?

  • any good deals on WD Purple? Need a couple for CCTV.

    • Red's will work fine.

  • +1

These were $50 cheaper just recently.

  • waiting a good deal on SSD
    anyone have comments?

  • Does this HDD have NAS on it?

    • Yes - bottom of cover plate - clearly "NAS" on it.

  • Amazing price. Ordered. Thanks.

    • Will it let you order a second one now that you have one order placed?

      • Nah, it only allows me to buy 1

  • I see they are limiting it to one per customer, does anyone know if you can just order another one under a separate order? E.g. multiple orders of one, or are they blocking that as well?

    • I ordered one on behalf of a friend (He wanted 2).

I just checked and am unable to order again.

      • Damn, I was looking at these earlier last week and hand't pulled the trigger, at that point it had no restriction.

        • Get your family to buy for you with their accounts and send money to them :)

    • I tried multiple orders and it doesn't work must be a different account

  • Excellent for the plex server, great price !

  • +3

They changed the limit a few hours ago, you can order 3 instead of 1 now.

    • they've just changed it back to 1 :/

  • +1

    Price now USD$230.50

    • +1

      Thanks, just cancelled and reordered

  • That's the fall… What's wrong with them?

  • price now 288?

    • Yeah amazon have run out of stock and that's the cheapest independent seller.
