Building off this deal, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/305530 I followed the general advice and decided to order a battery.

Considering the battery is about $USD6, I see you saving on both the torch and the battery. Cash rewards kicks in another few percent off.

Providing you don't pay with paypal in USD (my mistake in forgetting to change it back), you should get them both for around AUD 28 delivered.

  • You positive they will deliver it? Ive had a few orders cancelled now cos of batteries not allowed to be shipped to Aus.

    • Hmm, being an unprotected cell that could happen. Perhaps I will pull this post for now…

Although I'm sure no one will care if its inserted in the torch first.

      • +2

Its not about protected/unprotected afaik, its to do with the risk Li-ion batteries pose while shipping during flight. While reputable companies ensure the batteries they sell are safe to ship, chinese companies not so much.

Leave it, maybe someone will roll the dice and test it out.

        • And some shippers (not the retailer) take them, while others charge a high surcharge, while others dont handle them at this stage.
This is slowly shaking out and normalising again, as selling Li-Ion batteries is usually Very profitable.
Banggood have seldom not been able to ship them to Australia, but whenever they had this problem they have quickly worked out a
new shipping arrangement to Australia. :)

Yes, we just had 3 delivered last week. No issues.

    • You positive they will deliver it?

      Yes.

Ive had a few orders cancelled now cos of batteries not allowed to be shipped to Aus.

Batteries can be shipped to Australia. Who cancelled your orders and at what stage.

      • Fasttech. Checked out, paid, cancelled then refunded. Claimed batteries cant be shipped despite allowing me to check out.

  • I ordered some Meco 4000mAh for my BLF from Banggood and it was delivered.

    • +1

Hmmm they are fake! Be careful.

Well i should say they will work but they can be dangerous!

      • As aussieprepper has indicated, you never know what you get with non reputable brands.
And there is no such thing as a 4000mAh Li-Ion battery at this stage.
I wouldn't use them as they can easily be Very dangerous. :(

        • +1

And especially don't use questionable cells with this flashlight, which has exceptionally high current draw (4-5 amps) on its highest mode. Even good quality, name brand cells can be unsuitable if they aren't specifically designed for high drain. Buy some quality, high-drain Samsung, Panasonic or Sony cells to use instead. The Samsung INR18650-30Q mentioned in the deal is a good option, as is the Sanyo/Panasonic NCR 18650GA (which has a bit more capacity at ~3500mah, which is about as good as you can get at the moment)

    • Did your order come with tracking?

  • Ordered some 18650 batteries from BangGood and they arrived fine.

  • Thanks OP got one, which 18650 charges should i get for this thanks

I just bought Nitecore D4 from Zapals for $23.85, which is cheapest price I could find. See past OzB D4 deals for reviews

      • +1

The Nitecore D2 and D4 are Very good reliable and usually well priced chargers
Just ensure you get a genuine Nitecore charger, as there are plenty of non genuine falsely labelled ones, that look the same.
Banggood have always been a reliable supplier of genuine Nitecore chargers, whereas I dont know about Zapals ;)

        • Yep, I agree going from past OzB deals majority received geniune stock from Zapals, the one or two that didn't were promptly refunded and there is always PayPal protection if all else fails.

Xtar VC4 is another good alternative for roughly the same price

        • +1

Yes, but Unfortunately the XTAR VC4 uses an external power supply,
whereas the Nitecore D2 and D4 have a built-in power supply.

        • @keengeorge: Huh? Mine has a single USB cable that you use to power it

        • @ebosh: But as you said it relies on an external power source that the USB cable plugs into. :)
And it doesnt use a standard USB connector at the charger end.

        • +1

@keengeorge: Ah, point taken. Having said that, my D4 doesn't get used since I bought the Xtar since the VC4 lives permanently plugged into a 5 port USB charger, and there is usually a spare phone charger wherever I go if I take it with me. I am on the lookout for a decent single cell charger that can act as a powerbank if you have any sub-$30 suggestions though :)

      • Thanks buy how did u get $24? Its seems to be $34 and i cant switch to a cheaper postage option

        • +1

I ended up paying $31.63 AUD with shipping, you can't select the cheapest shipping only the next one up I think it is registered with tracking.

        • @adr8: Hmm. Perhaps the clicking backwards and forwards with currency tricked the system for me. But I just got confirmation that it's shipped.

        • @jso: Gee that was fast, I ordered on the 03/05 and mine is still processing, although it does state 2-3 days processing time. Did you order a free gift also? I got Mini Colorful Adjustable Book Reading Clip Light

        • +1

          @adr8:
I need to scroll up more.
Yes, I've previously ordered the charger from zapals. It was $31.63 too.
I got confirmation of my torch with the battery being shipped from banggood.
No, zapals haven't done anything and I ordered "on May 1, 2017 6:45:45 PM CST"

For those tempted to go with a cheaper charger, the LiitoKala Lii-100 is a good option (AU $6.78 at BangGood). It's one of the few cheap chargers which actually uses a proper CC/CV charge curve, and is safe. Don't buy some random cheap 18650 charger that hasn't been tested, because there are a LOT of bad, dangerous models out there.

  • So as per my prediction the torch arrived today and the battery was inside. But the cell is dead when I put it on the charger. I'm going to leave it for a bit and then try the 2 battery reset trick.

    • I'm an idiot. They want you to cut the protective film off the end off the battery. Obviously.

      • Haha, I was coming on here to seek help for exactly the same thing. What protective film? First battery of this type

Actually.. never mind, found it. Thin piece of transparent plastic on bottom of battery.

        • +1

It seems to be part of wrapper for the entire battery. I didn't find an edge or a bit you can peel back. I just cut inside the purple ring of thicker plastic.

Stuck the battery in my other headtorch and went for a run. Had it on high beam (blinding others) for an hour with out worrying about how much charge was left.

      • Lol, The film is to make sure the torch won't turn on during shipping.

  • Hi - i want to get this as standby to put the car - how long can the battery last?

being a noob - can I use the normal AA battery as backup; or it has to be the 18650 version battery?

If i want to get additional battery - which one should I buy as a spare?

    • I'm sure there is a lot of opinion, but you are better off with one of the cheaper torches, that can take 3xAAA and leaving the cap unscrewed. It will last as long as the batteries shelf life and the run time should be a good number of hours (depending on how bright you want it). I think the cheapest is a Meco for US$8

You can find other torches which are 14500 which is the same size as AA.
