Found this amazing return to Perth (originating from PEN). You can depart KUL too and it should work.

Not all dates work and you can't depart on a weekend.

I tried to dummy book 7-23Nov and it worked

Min stay of 6 days, max of 6 months.

      and your point is?
this deal will be beneficial to a group of Australians who will be traveling to the region frequently and are willing to position.

      • i imagine you could take the one way on penang to perth, and not take the return? fly economy there.

        go on, treat yourself.

    • But its cheap cheap la.

  • +2

Good deal - flyover with AirAsia, etc, sweet ride home in business.

    • indeed. its a 6 month ticket too. so if you are up in the region twice a year, you only need to position once.

    • -3

Business class should help you recover from the AirAsia experience, assuming their plan actually arrives.

      • You word it as if djkelly69 was talking about a negative AirAsia experience. Sounded more like djkelly69 knows a AirAsia = bargain (good)!

  • KUL-PER r/t was <1000 MYR in business on Malindo recently, so the route gets a lot of price competition. MH is moving to narrow bodies to PER, so they all will have pretty average seats if you're accustom to beds or suites. Still a good deal if it fits your travel plans.

    • Hello - where did you hear the narrow body news from? At least for the dates later in the year, it is still seem to be an A330

      • I doubled checked, even on their site it shows a switch to 737 as of this week, but most likely seasonal as it reverts to the 333 later in the year as you said. So not all bad news after all. Definitely don't mind their new J suites, especially if you can get to SYD/MEL around $1000 r/t occasionally.

        • Ah gotcha.
yes they had a problem this week because a 737 had been taken out of service and thus they are short planes and are rearranging the fleet and network… hearing that even A380s are flying East for the moment!

  • +2

Great for carrying my fat arse after a Penang eating spree!

  • Even cheaper coming back from KL on some dates. Some weekdays in early December go down to ~AUD$500.

  • The new Malaysia business class is nice. I think their satay is consistently one of the best things served on a plane.

(No, not the best satay, like anywhere, or better than what you get at most local shops. Given the fact it's served on a plane, it's pretty darn good.)

    • Asian business class tends to be very inconsistent IME. I know with Singapore you could get the latest mini suite style business class or equally likely to get an old seat that is really just economy with a bit more room.

How is MH in this regard?

      • +3

As with all airlines, it depends on the aircraft, and how recently it was fitted.
I flew biz. On MH last week LHR-MEL-LHR.

The first A380 seat was a bit tired already, but still flat bed and massive space.
The new A350 was one of the best business class seats I've flown. Seat is a little narrower compared to the A380 and foot room may be a little cramped when sleeping if you're over 6' tall.
        The return A380 was excellent.

Don't forget the MH Chef-on-Call. Excellent food!

BTW - after 4 serves of their satay' in a week, I don't get all the hype! Bits if meat on a stick drowned in sauce satay sauce. Nothing amazing. I had better meat on sticks on the streets of Shanghai…

        • A350? Malaysia Airlines? I don't think they have them yet. Are you sure it wasn't an A330?

        • @illumination: Yeah braddsey must be referring to the upgraded cabin on the a330 (where the leg space can get cramped apparently). Did you go for one of those throne seats braddsey?

        • +1

          @bozbargain:
Correct - my bad, A330. I assume it was the upgraded biz. product because it was all new and shiny and very comfortable.
No, I avoided the throne seat, apparently the foot area for the throne seat is very narrow. I had window seat 2A / 5A - great for sleeping with the console area on the aisle side.

"BTW - after 4 serves of their satay' in a week, I don't get all the hype! Bits if meat on a stick drowned in sauce satay sauce. Nothing amazing. I had better meat on sticks on the streets of Shanghai…"

Ugh. I knew someone would take it that way. Of course you've had better - ON THE GROUND.

I think it's deserved hype, because given the challenge of serving any food at 35k feet, it's commendable. Sure, any shop in melbourne probably has better. That's not the point. You're a captive audience in the sky. Your tastes and smell are like 30% less efficient. Given all the challenges, it's pretty darn good.

You can just airline food with the same measuring stick that you do food on the ground. It has be graded on a curve.

BTW, the A380 doesn't fly to AU. So, these flights are all on the new A330. J has direct aisle access except for a few seats on the right side. If you're solo traveling, sit on the left side. If you're with a partner, the middle pair is solid.

        • @travs: okay I'll put it another way… the Filet Mignon and the Nasi Lemak with Prawn Sambal I had from chef-on-call was worth raving about. The satay sticks - meh!

  • -2

    Is it safe?

    • -2

Of course Business Class is safe. Just not safe for your wallet.. but this deal isn't too unsafe for your wallet!

  • +1

I flew MH KL to Melbourne last week and it was sh**house! Flight attendants were nice enough but the aircraft was old smelly and the toilet was literally held together by gaffer tape. May sound racist (and it probably is so neg away if you like) but it was partly due to the demographics of 99% of the passengers picking their toes, coughing, splattering and BO permeating the entire cabin. Let's just say it won't be my first choice in the future. It wasn't really to begin with but unfortunately KLM seem to codeshare with MH on my route.

    • +3

And that's why you'd be avoiding all that by using this deal which is in business class. (well I assume you're avoiding it)

      • I'm assuming the smell will still waft through to business class

        • But in business class on MH the smell of satay masks everything else. From memory served as entree before every meal?

        • +1

          @marquise:
Satay is served before the first meal.

        • @marquise: For non-alcohol mom traveling with an infant, this is the best part of it.

    • Hahaha, my biggest complaint was the whole Melbourne Airport experience at the end! I flew the same thing last week. No aerobridge, stupid BUS once off the plane, even the wheelchair users had to hop onto the bus. 'Breakfast' was pretty bad too. Main meal was good but who needs to eat at midnight really…

  • Would be interesting to book this in conjunction with a multi-carrier award and somehow use this flight as an open-jaw.

    • +1

Thats the sort of thing that I have done.

Have created a ripper itinerary using points:

      ADL-DXB (J)
      DBX-LHR (F)
      MAN-DXB (F)
      DXB-KUL (J)
      KUL-PER (J)
PER-ADL (Y) - but planning to use points to upgrade as soon as I have more points!

Around $1800 in taxes, plus 220k points. Includes two legs on the A380 in J.

      • Mind me asking if you any ripper routes for Asia ?

        • No idea, sorry.

      • Which airline program did you book through?

  • I have flown the new MH J 3 times recently, October, January and on the weekend. It's an excellent product and there seems to be regular specials leaving from other Asian ports back through KUL into Australia. My one way tickets were all around $500 leaving out of Phuket. First two trips I had row 7 middle isle and we had 1k,2h+k and 4k on the weekend. As per the AUSBT article, the 4k throne seats have cramped leg space when in flat bed position and trying to sleep. 1k is definitely a better throne seat. The paired seats, in row 7 middle at least, have 1 cramped footwell space in flat bed position 7G and one with more footwell space in flat bed position 7D.

    This fare was first reported here;
    http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/cheap-in…

    • Those cheap fares are for PER only right? I see that you're in NSW like me hence the question.

      • +2

At this stage yes, however there has been regular occurrences of HKT-KUL-SYD for very goos prices, I have purchased 3 lots of the one ways for $500 each ticket. Set up google flights tracking.

        • The 2h and 2k seats, had any of them better leg space than the ofther (since they only have the one seat in front of them)? I've booked 2D/G/H/K for the family since I want both my wife and myself to sit next to one of our kids but I'm worried now that they're probably the worst seats in the cabin (in relative terms of course, it's still business class). Also, I'm 6'5" so extra leg space doesn't hurt (1D/G were booked already since they're bassinet seats).

        • +1

          @bozbargain:

Sorry, my wife and youngest son sat in 2H and 2K so I didn't focus on the leg space. In 2D and 2G I think it's, 2D that gets more leg width. Length will be the same, besides row 1 I think however it's width in the leg well when trying to sleep that you want in the MH 330's.

  • Ah I better keep a look out for a HKT sale too… didn't know they existed
