Coles Ultimate 40% Chocolate Chip Cookies 400g Now $3

130

My local Coles has a stack of these out the front with big $3 signs and Price Hipster confirms these were perpetually $3.99 for at least the last 12 months… until this week. I remember they used to be $3.75 a few years back.

Looks like this will be a long-running deal. Enjoy responsibly.

They're spruiking this on their website too: https://www.coles.com.au/~/media/images/colesa/homepage/caro…

They changed the formula of these cookies and they're not as solid as they used to be… sure they're still 40% choc chip but something about the cookie dough has made it more… powdery? Unfortunately they don't taste as good as they used to from this change :(

Is this what other people have noticed as well, or is it just me?

Obligatory reduction in cost to make them with the drop in "RRP" - they reduce the quality of the ingredients.
At least, that's my cynical guess.

well sold be weight so still get the same amount ….. what i've noticed about most biscuits is that they substitute butter with palm oil …… i know the arnott version still uses butter …… time to read ingredients next time i'm in coles.

palm oil seems to be creeping into many products not just biscuits ….. potatoe chips also some times just callled vegetable, oil but the give away is saturated fat content vs cooked in sunflower or canola, oil. for potatoe chips …heck even the donuts at coles and safeway are cooked in palm oil ….. saturated fat central.

And that's not even mentioning the environmental impact of the palm oil industry. Remember when there was an effort to get products clearly labelled as containing palm oil? There was pushback from people involved with Indonesian trade saying that it would create fear in consumers. So sickening to see how the continued hunt for profit is ruining our planet and many people's lives.

Had a similar impression of the Arnott's Premier choc chip recently.

Sad to hear. These cookies were great. I haven't had them in years though.

I prefer the fresh triple choc cookies.

  • Hey what are the best cookies you can buy at a supermarket? I haven't had a decent cookie in ages but I want to try some new ones.

    • I like the Coles bakery white choc and macadamia ones. They're good.

  • Arnotts choc chip cookies is the best imo….

    • yes they are 40% real chocolate chips not compound chocolate and use butter not palm oil.

  • Looks like this will be a long-running deal.

This is the new normal price…

They've reduced the quality to decrease the price, it's not a bargain…

I disagree. With the savings you can now afford to take up smoking so you can't taste the difference between the old ones and the new ones.

Since I started smoking I now eat the food packaging as roughage.

Great tip. Should be in a WIKI.

    • Yet you complain about artificial sales. Either they reduce the price permanently or they overcharge half of the time, this is better.

    • Highly doubt it. Very likely that they have improved their manufacturing by reducing labour count on the production line or switched to a cheaper manufacturer.

Large supermarket chains is placing more pressure on food manufacturers to improve on their labour usage. This is driven by supermarket "prices are down" campaign.

      • Why do you doubt it?

Reformulation for a cheaper product happens all the time

        • Reformulation for a cheaper product

eg. sourcing cheaper and/or imported ingredients…

        • Coles will need to provide a new label and packaging for reformulation.

          @supaderp:

          Source?

        • -1

          @supaderp:

          Thats not a source.

I am asking for a source where it is somehow required for a new label and packaging because they reformulated the product.

        • @samfisher5986: Does it matter? I've just shown that palm oil is not being used as an ingredient!

I've had my time in the industry long enough to know how things work. I am not going to upload Coles product req on ozbargain. Perhaps google using with criteria site:foodstandards.gov.au, maybe you will find something relevant.

I raised this with the mods. They think it is a bargain even after I pointed out that this means every Aldi Price Drop, Every Woolies everyday low pricing change and every other Coles Down Down price can also be considered a bargain.

If you dont like it, then start a site discussion.

or just post every single permanent price drop as a bargain, even though you won't be saving any money by purchasing it.

        • +1

          every single permanent..

I dont think that is wise, changing the way things work is better for general discussion rather than flooding the site based on a personal disagreement with the mods position.

Due to this reduction. Aldi haas reduced 40% choc chip cookies from $3 to $2.69

BARGAIN!! Given the votes here, that probably would be a good deal for you to post

    • Well spotted.
