  • The basmati rice is not cheap.
Woolworths and coles sell 5kg for $8.99 last week.
Not the same brand, but still..

    • +7

the coles/woolworths basmati is utter crap imho. there are many grades of basmatic (the highest grade is aged for a long time)

      • -6

wrong! try the one with blue cover usually for 10 bucks for 5 kg, punches hard to the level of india gate. their sunrice is crap though

      • i age it myself like wine …… at the back of the pantry when i forget that i bought it ……

can't say i've been to a rice tasting and tried the different ages of rice .. by the time i add salt butter and tumeric coles and safeway rice on special …. brand varies.. rice tastes like most other basmati.

I think the quality of India Gate is much better than what is sold at Coles/Woolies.

      • You really know your basmatis.

        • I have tried the sunrice basmati and Maharaja's choice. This one beats them hands down.

Btw, if you are getting this from Costco, it goes pretty well with butter chicken - also sold there.

        • @ms:

I don't do Costco, I'm not paying no company a membership fee.

They should be paying me to shop there.

They should be paying me to shop there.

          Cool.

Yes not cheap but it is far superior in quality to that sold at Coles and Woolies. Definitely worth it at this price. There are big differences in taste, flavour, texture, aroma and grain size. At this price it is a great buy.

    • Also make sure it is current year crop '17

  • Definitely one of the good ones. It costs $25 for 5kgs http://www.indiaathome.com.au/rice-flour-grain/rice/india-ga….
Good find OP. Although you might have to split it with someone, 20kgs seems like a lot of rice.

Amen! I am Asian and my partner is white and this will last us only a couple of months.

    • My bad Gerbil. You are correct, the brown bag is the $25 for 5kgs. Unsure about this one.

      • This is 'classic.' The brown one is 'Premium.'

Does anyone know what the difference is in terms a quality? Obviously the premium should be better. How/Why?

        • Basmati rice has many parameters to judge the quality -age, length of each grain , place where grown . Premium ones are better in all these criteria compared to the standard ones and that's why they are pricey .

        • @auindie:

That's a bit of a generic answer. Which of these parameters are the main ones affecting the price/quality?

A car can be expensive because of its speed, ride quality, comfort, size, comfort, prestige, passenger capicity, etc.

Ferraris are expensive. So they must have a lot of seats? No….

        • @Gerbil:

          Thanks.

Still waiting for an answer to my question 😊

Anyone know what a case of the ribeye is in kg? $100 saving, need to do some maths!

  • +1

I'm not strong enough to carry 20kg out

    • +1

You'll have to get someone to toss it into your car. I won't tell the elf.

      • I've started doing pushups

    • vicious circle ….. too weak to carry and if you can't get it home how do you eat enough to grow strong …. 20 kg …. that the size of a small bag of cement …… people will think you stole it from a UN food truck .

there must be warning about back injury if lifted by one person ……

      • Mithrel is light

        • @Gerbil:

My axe broke along time a go and have been waiting for a good deal on a new axe.

I feel like people forget Costco is not about the lowest price an item of a catagory can be… It is about above average quality or American products at competitive prices. This is just my opinion in response to people comparing Costco to Coles, woolies and ALDI

    • If it's not cheap why pay $60 membership. Most products are available elsewhere.

      • I think I explained poorly it is the the lowest price or close enough too on an item but not as cheap as the generic version

        • Understand!

  • Have to disagree that the rice at Woolies is not of comparable quality. I was in yesterday and they had large bags of India Gate basmati on special. Think it was 5Kg, might have been 10kg. I can't remember price, but worth a look. They also had two different grades of India Gate - not sure which they were off hand.

Steer clear of own brand basmati though. Quality is worth paying for.

Just went to my local Coles Pyrmont and they are selling the India Gate rice products in 5KG bags for $13 a bit more cost per KG but works out to be more convenient if you don't want to pay for a Costco Membership or lug around and use 20KG of rice.
