Bunnings Warehouse: Square Reader $5-$10 (Normally $19)

150

Spotted when in Bunnings yesterday, were three units on shelf at this store - and this is the chip and swipe reader (not chip and NFC).

Deal seems to be national, with prices as low as $5 in some stores.

Depends on what you do. If you're a food retailer, cafe, fixed location business, or don't have a headphone port on the device - then chip and tap is for you.

But for you're a sole trader, mobile, want to process credit card transactions without a bulky device, or are a penny pincher (and don't want to pay $49 more for something you won't use frequently), then this chip and swipe unit is for you.

And can you be quiet for once JV. Raining on people's parade like you constantly do (see your second post on this deal thread because you don't know how to use an edit button) is a really old trope. It's beyond boring now.

It's nationwide. Saw this in two Newcastle does recently. There's a new wireless model coming out to compensate for the iPhone.

@jv: I saw it in store, was trying to edit my typo/spell correct but you replied so I can't. Afaik I can't link to stuff in store, correct me if I'm wrong.

this is the chip and swipe reader

Thats "chip and PIN", or swipe. Swipe refers to the old magnetic strips, and does not work for Australian cards.

3.5mm eh? Too bad for iPhone 7 or Moto-Z users.

    • and does not work for Australian cards

      yes it does…

      • By jove you are right. I have not seen anywhere that magstripe can be used in years, so thought they were dead.
Also, confusing it with the switch from signature to PIN, which is now required for all Australian cards.

Westpac: You still need your magnetic stripe on your card to support terminals that haven't yet been upgraded to CHIP technology.

But given that this device supports chip-reading, it should not be allowed to use mag-stripe unless the card is chipless.
So there are still local chipless credit cards in Australia? Wow.

        • A lot of terminals still don't read some chips. My AMEX I have to swipe AND sign at some locations.

        • You also need to swipe when you want to use your credit card award point to pay for something in Myer, you can't use the chip.

Bought and use the Tap'n'Go $59 version blue toothed to a Galaxy Tab on my front desk. Great comments from customers. So much better than the Chip&swipe version I've used plugged into my phone.
The only problem I have with Square is you can't print a paper receipt. You can email or SMS a receipt link, but when opened by the customer, it's 4 pages long.
You could email the receipt to yourself and print it out, but it is such a long winded process.
I always ask if they want a receipt, and if they do I use a duplicate carbonless receipt book from Officeworks. So analogue - 1 step forward, 2 steps back.

    • What type of business do you operate, and you use any accounting integration with your Square setup @MITM?

Might be a way to come up with an email receipt from your accounting platform, and a way to identify customers who want them.

Also, you can do a good level of customisation on the email receipts to cut out any unnecessary detail - more info:

$5 at Frankston VIC Bunnings - just got one

These are $5.00 at Bunnings Rosebud too.

Just got one from Belmont. Paid $6.

  • Question regarding this Square payment reader, does it allow pre authorisation charges without incurring the fees? For e.g, if needed for a deposit for incidentals, such as holiday guests at short term accomodation

  • My local Bunnings never had these even a few weeks ago, does anyone know if the deal is still on?
