  • is the price for the netbook is just in one HN store or australia wide?
i'm keen to buy one but the price in HN website is not $249

  • Certainly can't go wrong at that price, even if it only has a 3 cell battery.

Mind you, a 3 cell with an N450 CPU(which this is), is probably very similar in battery life to a N270/N280 with a 6 cell.

  • wonder if other HN will price match

  • 2 days to redeem

Redeem from (valid until 31 Aug 2010)

    that's top?

    • redeem from : link :)

it's valid until 31 Aug only.

  • Great deal, like the one HN had back during the Easter long weekend.

    Good laptop too.

  • can you check what is the printed on the battery? can you confirm if this is 3cell or 6cell battery?

    • another way of checking this would be to see if the battery is bulging out a little. if it is, it's the 6-cell. (wohoo!)

  • The upper part of the ad says 3 cell battery

    The Specs list 3 hours.

I think it'll be a 3 cell. You'd be hard pressed to get the number wrong twice.

3 cell, but 6 hour life. Is that doable with Atoms?

    • +2

I have one of these and the 3 cell battery rarely lasts more than 2 hours doing very little but power my USB wireless modem for web browsing and running Cakewalk Pro (midi score editor). The lappy doesn't have enough screen brightness settings to really cut down the power usage.

  • +1
    • I'd suggest the OP edits the post to correct the battery life. as per that emachines link, it's 4 hours on the 3 cell, 8 hours on the 6-cell.

  • Can you upgrade the RAM in this?
    Cheers

    • -1

Yes, it has a single RAM slot, you would need to pull the existing 1gb out and insert a 2GB module.

That said, I run Win7 on my N450(ASUS)with 1GB, and it has no problem at all!

      • +4

And I used to run Windows 3.0 on a 286 with 1 Mb of memory with Adobe Type Manager displaying beautiful fonts in huge sizes as a way to sell laser printers of the day. Ah, memories…

        • +1

          I used to run Windows 3.0 on a 286 with 1 Mb

Gee, your showing your age now Daabido!

          • @portmac: I've been showing it for a while now.

I also remember that the hard drive used to thrash something terrible trying to run the OS and Type Manager on such meagre RAM!

  • Is she good for my money?

  • awwesomee

  • any difference between this one and the em250 that was on sale a couple months ago? apart from this one having 1.66ghz and the other 1.6ghz?

    • +1

Essentially the CPU….N270 V N450. Then 450 is far superior in terms of battery life.

      • -1

Its not really even the CPUs that draw the power. The older atom netbooks had something like a 5w atom CPU with the 15w intel GMA950 integrated chipset. Benefits of the atom low power usage were thrown away because they wanted to use up all their old stock of chipsets :P Then you have things like wifi cards, harddrives etc that all draw the same power.

Swapping an N270 for an N450 won't give you a huge difference in battery life.

I can push 10+ hours on my 9" acer netbook (the first ones that came out). But i've got a 12-cell battery for it :P

        • Swapping an N270 for an N450 won’t give you a huge difference in battery life

In my experience (I owned an n270 10" and now an n450 10"), and the battery life is near double when web browsing, or watching videos.

    • and the apparent LACK of USB ports on the 250

no, that wasn't a very good idea Mr. eMachines..

  • Is this deal on at QLD HN? I will go to HN store first thing tomorrow morning. I hope can get one:-)

  • Just one question about the redeem date, is 31 Aug 2010 the deadline for online registration or mail out? I will go on a trip on the 30th and back straight to work on the 31th, would be hard to get time to mail out by that date…

    • +2

      Step 1: Register online
Step 2: Cut-out SNID barcode from box
Step 3: Make a copy of tax invoice
Step 4: Mail claim form, SNID barcode and tax invoice to us within 14 days of purchase

31 aug is the online registration deadline.

      • That will be great! Thanks, tinx~~

  • Mad price. Even has stereo speakers unlike the Asus I bought from COTD a while back. Shame there's no 6-cell option available though.

  • Superb Deal!
Btw, is it just on HN chadstone??

  • btw there is only $12 difference with last emachine deal from HN :)

here's an informative review of the product

    http://xprtreviews.blogspot.com/

  • Anyone seen this in other HN?
in the market for one of this as well.

  • Nice deal…

But I'm still going to hold out for the N550 equipped dual core netbooks (though there is a $699 price premium, so it's not exactly a cheap netbook!)

My current N270 based Acer Aspire one has been unimpressive so far. I need something with a little more grunt.

  • Went to my local HN (Indooroopilly, Brisbane) store this morning and was told the sale started 3 weeks ago and a few stores had them and sold out very quick:(

    • No stock at Oxley either I'm afraid :(

  • Just got mine from Domayne. First I went to HN, but didn't see any. So went nearby Domayne and got it for $249.95.

  • Does anyone know if the supplied power pack supports 110 Volts ? (I am planning to travel to Japan and US later in the year). The specs at http://www.emachines.com.au/em/product.do?ctx1w.att21k=2&Lan… don't make this clear.

    • They are 100-240V adapters.

  • Is this all harvey norman stores that the laptops available for $250 or just chadstone?

    Cheers

  • Just at HN Highpoint. Didn't see it there.

  • No stock in WA I think. But I think they are $250 in the system anyway.

    • Actually I just called CityWest Perth and they have plenty of stock there. They are going for $249. On my way now…

      • Picked up one…

  • i've been wanting to buy one, but now on second thoughts, i'm not sure these laptops are really that useful..

like what can one really do on/with 'em other than, well, web-surfing? can anyone enlighten me with some ideas? :D:D

    • I think people buy it because its cheap, portable, small and weighs only 1kg

When do we ever see a brand new laptop around $250.

I don't think manufacturers like selling stuff cheap, cause they don't make much money out of it. Even as technology improves, manufacturers have an "out with the old, in with the new" mentality.

The more profit they make the better for the company.

  • Hi, Can anyone please inform that in which store near melbourne they are available at this price of $249?

    Thanks :)

    • Just bought one from HN Auburn $236 each, $197 after cashback. Apparently they have 200 in stock minus the one I have hehe.

      • +1

Oh man. So tempting……………………Must refrain from buying……………

      • thanks :)

How did they even lowered the price to $236?!!!

Just a small issue, I cannot find the store in "Auburn, VIC", what is the post code?

        • I'm pretty sure he means Auburn in NSW. A suburb of Sydney.

        • They probably have many in stock so they put down the price.

I'm glad Harvey Norman have listened to us, having put more stock out there.

  • +1

    Just got 1 from HN(Chadstone) Melbourne….
    249+63(24month warranty)
it comes with 12month manufacturer warranty
    so 36month warranty in total

  • I called one of the guys at Harvey Norman Carindale. He reckons he has stock. He said to bring a picture of the $249 flyer in and he'd see what he could do. Does anyone have a reciept to confirm the deal?

  • Just got one for $249 from HN Broadway. It's a nice little solid machine; looks good too :)

  • Picked up one tonight at Harvey Norman Broadway (when I called earlier in the day they had 40 in stock). I paid $236 ($197 after cash back!) as they price matched Auburn per @ispayks. Thanks OzBargain!!!

  • Anyone know whether its possible to buy spare batteries / 6 cell batteries for this laptop?

Also can do they an interstate price match? Im in WA btw.

    • I've been trying to search on ebay, etc…no spare batteries for this model were found…appreciate if anyone knows..

  • Nice netbook. In my opinion, better than Dell's equivalent. I hate Dell's glossy shell, so easy to get stained.
By the way, Domayne West Gosford has a lot in stock as well. But they charged $249.95. Still good if you live around Gosford. Hurry up today!

  • Went to Boradway at noon and they would NOT go below $339 and Auburn store is apparently out of stock… bugga, too late. The other deal for acer for $798 (after cashback) was still on and that one looked bloody good.

  • DO NOT worry about price matching for $236, my colleage just rang up Broadway HN and they already said they have informed Auburn HN not to sell it for $236 and already put the price back up to $249 !!! what a bunch of pr|cks …

    • $249??? What was that $339 what they told me then? Maybe em250, normal hardley normal…
Called martin place hn and they didn't have stock but said the price is $249. Called broadway and the guy insisted em350 being $329… after jerking around fair bit more with different salesdudes the price ended up being $249 - cashback.
So $13 worse deal that it was before, but now I really do not feel like going to hn anymore :o)

  • Nice deal even cheaper at $236. Just got it, but did I just get suckered into a $47 extended total 3 year warranty?

    • +1

yes not worth 20% of purchase price you not gonna keep it 3 years correction 4 years, I get a new netbook each year after selling last years model on ebay

      • You have a statutory warranty which will cover you for however long a magistrate decides it should be covered for. With a $250 netbook, I wouldn't expect anything longer than 12 months though. If something goes wrong on this machine, other than perhaps a faulty ram module, it will cost more than $47 to fix. The chances of something going wrong in 3 years? Who knows, but if the screen fails, mainboard fails etc at 2, 2 1/2 years, I think $47 would be a good investment. It's like insurance, if you use it you'll think it's excellent value for money, if you don't you'll think it's a waste.

Note: I voted + on the comment above accidently when I was trying to just reply. Anyone know how to remove a comment vote?

  • Just got one, though I needed to travel 150 kms for it!!

    Long live ozbargain…

  • Just got one, but not without difficulty:

Call 1) Chadstone; but was told that the price was an error, and that real price was 339.
Call 2 and 3) I called QV (Melb cbd) and Moorabin stores to see if they had stock, but they didnt.
Call 4) I called Chadstone again, spoke to someone else, and they said that the price was only a weekend special. Back to 339.
Call 5) I then tried calling the Auburn store (thanks ispayks), and they said they do have stock, the price IS 249, but they wont send to Melb.
Not to worry I thought, as I have a brother in Sydney who could pick it up for me.

Call 6) So I tried Chadstone again (3rd time), and spoke to someone else, who this time said that the price IS still 249 ! :-) I offered him my Amex numbmer over the phone to lock it in….

He then got back to me (whilst waiting to send me the CC auth form), that he was told by his mngr the price had actually returned to the 339 mark. :-(

I told the salesman (very nice guy!) that I was quoted in Auburn for 249, and that I can get it from there via my brother etc etc.. so would he match the price?

He checked with his mngr, and offered a few percet off from 339.
I made an offer for 275, which he agreed to. [works out to approx 19%]

Anyways, a few more phone calls later and faxes back and forward, he called me with the SNID (11 digits, numeric only, for anyone still trying to locate it), and I've just registered it on the Redemption page.

So I was able to get it for 275 - 39 = 236…. [maybe $236 is the magical number?! see da1andonly 's post]

At least I was able to pay less than the 339 price point, and still got in with my redemption on time.

Many thanks op for posting, and to the nuice guy in HN Chadstone who (although didnt honour/match the 249, but he) did at least discount it for me.

    • Lucky you.

    • I have had troubles too.

First I called Traralgon HN, they said they are out of stock, but some may come on 31/8/2010. So I gave them a call in the morning and they told that it "may" come on 3 pm.

HN in Moe told me that they do not have it either.

Finally, the person from Sale HN informed me that they have plenty of stock (25) and I rushed there to grab one.

It costed me $20 fuel cost, plus the hassle to drive 150 kms in total.

Bargains often come at a price :(

  • bought one from HN Chadstone. But the screen resolution is very poor. pixel blocks r visible in my one.. which is very noticeable and looks bad :(
is it only with mine?? wht bout others??

A suggestive reply will be appreciated.. thnx

    • What's your resolution set to?

      • 1024x600 (32 Bit color Quality)

the screen looks like OLD CRT monitors :(

        • 1024 x 600 should look fine on a 10.1 inch screen. Unless your expectations are unrealistic, there could be something wrong. Can you take a photo and upload it?

          • @Dean-o: i tried to take some but its barely visible in the photos.
I bought an Acer AOD260 the day before yesterday. It has the same exact specs. But Acer's screen quality is much much much better. Im planning to take the emachine to HN tomorrow to check if theres nething wrong :/

            • @freakymonstah: Please advise - if it ends up being your unit itself, or the machine just has a bad dispolay. Do any of the other purchasers have feedback from their units ?

Cos I was plannnig on using it sot of as a media player etc - something for the kids to be able to watch movies on etc, maybe even in the car.

Hey, does anyone know if I can get a car (12v cig lighter) plug for it ?

              • @esbelfer: The lcd screen is of bad blue backlight tint. Causes eye strains. Do not upgrade from the em250 because you will notice a big difference in build quality and lcd backlight tint. (Also, the em250 has 2 speakers (not like 1 speaker in em350), 3 usbs (2 usbs in em350) and a much better build. (Not all plastic like em350))

                • @[Deactivated]: can that be adjusted: the colour of the lcd - by reducing the amount of blue light ?…

                  • @esbelfer: Yes, the blue can be adjusted through the graphics card options. It does become better if you do.

  • Got one at $249 from HN Broadway tonight.

However the first sales guy I asked didn't reduce the price from the marked price $339 after I told him about the $249 at HN Auburn.

I waited for another sales guy (more like the manager) to ask if I needed any help and told him the same story. He went away to check it out and gave me $249.

Was it my imagination or did they put Windows 7 on the display machine? I didn't pay much attention to the OS specs and only realised it's WinXP after I came home.

  • 30 left at young, nsw as of 12pm Tuesday. Bought 2x at $249.95

  • Hi,

I need a little help from you guys.

The power socket connected to the em350 seems quite unusual to me. I may need to use this netbook in EU countries. What is the option for me if I do not want to use a converter? Can I replace the power socket only? What are these types of socket called? Does anyone know whether it can be found on eBay.

Sorry to bother everyone with this silly question.

    Thanks :)

    • I think the standard power supply in EU countries are within the 220-240V range, similar to the standard in Australia. So I don't think you need a converter.

What you need is a universal adaptor, something like this.

      • Thank you very much. Actually, I wanted to say about adapters. If I do not want to carry a universal adapter with me always, is there any option to change the plug itself?

  • Forgot to add:
During the redemption registration process, in the Ts & Cs, it says something about promo being offered by Acer etc.

So maybe this is also a similar netbook to the Acer model ?… !

    • +1

It is essentially Acer. If you run CPU-Z, a number of the internal parts are Acer's i.e. mainboard, etc. eMachine is simply one of Acer's product lines.

  • The lcd screen is of bad blue backlight tint. Causes eye strains. Do not upgrade from the em250 because you will notice a big difference in build quality and lcd backlight tint. (Also, the em250 has 2 speakers (not like 1 speaker in em350), 3 usbs (2 usbs in em350) and a much better build. (Not all plastic like em350)).

  • Just a heads up. that it may take 6-8 weeks till you actually get your cash back back.

  • It looks like the cashback period has been extended.
