You need to combine it with the home phone to get that price.

^When combined with any Dodo Home Phone (HP) service. Total price shown includes HP price $29.90 per month on a 24 month contract. Excludes excess call charges.

I would consider being Dodo to be a huge limiting factor.

    • +1

If it's shit, you've always got a case with the TIO.

In Australia, you offer a server if it's not what you were offered, which is Unlimited ADSL 2+ you get your money back.

      • +1

I've heard so many complaints about Dodo because of customers not being given what they paid for from Dodo.
And yes, I've heard of cases against Dodo where the TIO has favoured the consumer.

      • I am sure you can get unlimited.

But if very slow what is the point?

My experience with DODO is one word "SLOW" but not very sure now.

      • +13

if you're aiming to spend some time talking to the TIO then signing up to this plan is the right way to go
EDIT: didn't mean to write a poem

  • Colour me interested!

Wonder what they consider as "fair usage".. :)

    • not sure its fair value as tpg is offering 500gb for the same $70 total cost.

I think you would consider yourself lucky if you could get that on dodo.

  • +1

Not for me DODO but hope because of this plan will make TPG release some new plans.

  • Can anyone please advise dodo's speed in Brisbane? Also if I want to switch from TPG can I apply now or have to wait for 30 days?

  • Good price but Im stuck with AAPT and ADSL1 :(

  • +3

Why link to bestphonedeals rather than dodo themselves?

    • +3

      click-through advertising money?

  • Very confused they said "ADSL (with home phone)", is that price $39.90 includes home phone?

  • +13

I'd avoid them like the plague. For years they've offered substandard service and they manage to attract a lot more complaints than a company their size should. Search on Whirlpool and see http://www.smh.com.au/technology/biz-tech/isps-speeds-almost…

  • +6

Their unlimited plans are fixed to 256Kbps speed. "No shaping" is a hilarious claim to make when their max speed is limited to 1/4 of what my shaping speed is with TPG…

    • Can't say I'm surprised to hear this sort of stuff coming from Dodo, but is this stated anywhere? can't find a mention on their website about default shaping for unlimited plans.

      • +1

It's right there in the deal's link. Click on the little 'unlimited' tab, and in the table you get, for the $39 'unlimited' plan it says "256kbps" in the "speed" column.

        • I can't see an unlimited tab on either the bestphones nor dodo direct link… ?

          • @[Deactivated]: http://tinyurl.com/3729q5z
(some irony involved having to upload that screenshot to my TPG webspace ;)

            • @salem: That's weird. It looks like this to me.

Although yours looks more accurate, considering the tabs on mine appear to be for Telstra and Optus in spite of the URL and the title of the table…

              • @[Deactivated]: mines the same…..telstra and optus…

              • @[Deactivated]: that is weird…. :/ leftover cookies from a previous visit to bestphonedeals.com.au maybe?

                • @salem: nope. their site has changed. I just re-visited and hit ctrl-f5 and now I am getting the telstra-optus tabs, too.

                  • @salem: A hunt around Whirlpool suggests that the Optus/Telstra thing is to do with whether you can get the $39.90 price or not. If you have an Optus owned ADSL2+ port at the local exchange you can get $39.90, if you only have a Telstra one available it's $59.90.

Which I guess means it really is truly unlimited ADSL2+. Whacky.

                    • @[Deactivated]: well in that case I may just have to revoke my neg vote. Although I would still not go over to them, as I have heard they are bad, but it's a good price for actual unlimited, assuming it is actually unlimited AND unthrottled.

    • +3

      {the below info was based on an artifically throttled speed of 256kbps as intitally displayed on the page. That page has now been updated to remove any mention of said throttling, but I will leave this info here in case it gets changed back again or something}

also, and my maths may be wrong here, if it is 256kbp max, then assuming:
      1) you max out your connection for a whole month
      2) 1000 kb = 1 mb, 1000mb = 1gb

      you get:
      256 kilobits per second
      32 kilobytes per second
      1920 kilobytes per minute
      115200 kilobytes per hour
      2764800 kilobytes per day
      82944000 kilobytes per 30-day month
      82944 megabytes per month
      82.944 gigabytes per month

Therefore a max of 83GB in downloads per month.

Although my maths may be wrong, it has been before…on much easier calculations than this (curse you, chupa-chups!)

      • +1

Google: 256 kilobits per second in GB per month
Answer is pretty much what you said. :-)

        • LOL, amazing the Google has this. I'll remember that gem!

      • I think you're correct, and that would also be the maximum theoretical limit. In practise I think you will be lucky to get 70gb.

    • Whooo I forgot about that one.

  • DODO DODO - marketing to the young and naive age bracket 18-24 yr olds.

    • +2

Actually I think you got your markets mixed up :P
18-24 year olds would be the most informed and least cashed up.
I think dodo is aiming for retirees or the tech unsavvy seniors!

      • I agree, the plans are aimed at mums & dads or oldies who say 'oh its unlimited, which means I'll never have to pay more than my monthly fee' and couldn't tell the difference between 256kbps and 256Mbps.

    • hahhah you're such a dodo

  • I have been with dodo for years without a drama. However, if you aren't all that tech savvy and need help with the simplest of issues, I'd suggest another ISP.

    • Many years ago, Dodo used to have 'good' non-savvy technical support. You used to be able to call them up and get help writing a Microsoft Word letter, for example. Unfortunately they got too many calls from non-tech savvy customers and cancelled that service. (Sometimes it is great to be able to pass the buck when asked for tech support by family members.)

Nowadays I would say if you are all that tech savvy and don't need help with the simplest of issues, I'd suggest another ISP. Their support scripts are long, tedious, difficult to follow and in my experience do not relate to the problem you are calling about.

Beware cancelling with Dodo. They kept billing me for months after I had A.)Called up Dodo to cancel and B.)Had my broadband switched to another provider. I did, however, manage to get a refund without involving the TIO.

  • small print

-your service may or may not work :P

  • Going on their reputation… DODO = NONO.

  • +5

For the sake of your sanity, stay well away from these clowns. They will never return your calls. They will try tricking you in to contract extensions. They will always blame their clients. 1/2 of you attempts to browse anything will timeout. They will shape you at any time they feel like it, and then deny doing so………..Speaking from experience. (15yrs Network Engineering experience, so a users level of understading has nothing to with their pathetic level of service)

  • +2

Don't be misled. Stay as far away from the dead bird as possible!

Dodo is trying to market this at mums & dads who aren't tech savvy and sucker them in. I would go out of my way to warn ppl about dodo, even if that required extra effort on my part. That's how bad they are!

  • +1

    Dodo = Oh no.

  • +2

    absolutely TERRIBLE deal.

  • +2

wow .. didn't know dodo is this bad. 256kbps is laughable non-adsl speed

    • We've established it's not 256kbps, see the long reply conversation above.

      • No, where is that…
Their ad on TV states 256Kps speed.

  • +2

Dodo, dodo, the internet that dies!

    • +3

Dodo…the company that may make the internet extinct like the bird

  • Don't Don't ever deal with these guys …

  • +1

stop negging on the basis that it's 256kbps cos it's NOT.

    • proof?

      • The proof is that all the websites don't say that it is.

There is no proof it's anything other than the ADSL2+ speed advertised.

      • go on their actual website and check the plans for yourself?

i'm not saying u won't get slow speeds if u do connect.. but it's clearly not advertised as "256kbps" on their own website

but yeah i wouldn't go near them with a ten foot pole.. read this lol thread on WP —> http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1242138

also, there is something interesting a WP rep said on http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1518263

"The $39.90 price is available to exchanges that Optus has ADSL ports available. Otherwise the price is $59.90 within Telstra exchanges in Metro areas or $99.90 in regional areas."

  • Been with them 1 year. Adsl2+ @ bout 8mbs on speedtest.net
Not going to complain bout them any more than my previous isp's.

  • best service EVER…LOL JK, it's DODO

  • better not go with DoDo

  • +1

I guess its Truly unlimited since they never expect you to reach the limit because you will be busy most of the time arguing with their customer service and the TIO.

  • What are you all on about? 256k is plenty to run my BBS :P

  • +2

Stay far away from Dodo, my parents have them (they won't change providers because they want to keep their email addresses…) and the quality of service is just awful, long unexplained downtimes and the worst customer service there is (they refuse to abandon their scripts, which means even if you are not computer illiterate, they still insist on going through the basic steps like restart your modem etc).

  • For all those that have voted negative on this deal with reasons like:

Going on their reputation… DODO = NONO.
    Dodo = Oh no.
    absolutely TERRIBLE deal.
Dodo…the company that may make the internet extinct like the bird
Don’t Don’t ever deal with these guys …
    better not go with DoDo

Unfortunately these aren't justified reasons for your negative votes. You guys should really take some time to read the voting guidelines:

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

Personally, yes I think the company has poor product and customer service, and I understand that you can find a lot of horror stories about them by just googling for them.

However, by voting negative and providing brief comments such as 'oh no', 'stay away', 'don't deal with these guys', etc, it doesn't really help anyone. At the very least, please explain why. For newer visitors who may not be aware of Dodo's reputation, the lack of explanation isn't going to help them. For the ISP/Internet savvy people, they would have most likely known to stay away. So really, please follow the guidelines when voting negative. I'll be revoking these votes.

And for those who have voted negative, and provided valuable information/experience, well done and thank you.

    • I think it's been sufficiently explained, and if not, it certainly gets the buyer aware of a problem and hopefully they research more.

      • They still are insufficient reasons to vote negative. When you sign up to this website you agree to abide by it's guidelines.

        • +1

True. But regardless, if I were seriously looking into signing up for Dodo, I would find these negs helpful.

  • -1

Name me one ISP in the past 4 years who has been able to live up to their "unlimited broadband" claim who charge less than $200 per month.

I can recall at least Blitz and Koala being two ISP's who went bankrupt, a number of others had to cease the service to prevent them getting into trouble. In the past you joust couldn't turn a profit charging customers so little while maintaining a reliable, fast network.

I'd be very, VERY wary of an ISP claiming unlimited usage for $40 per month. Unless something has changed recently with the upstream providers at PIPE etc I can't see how they could afford to support this service.

  • Girlfriend's with DODO, right on the EDGE of the exchange about 4.5-5 kms OUT. Speeds syncing at 4mbits which is pretty decent lol… On the Naked DSL plan 10/100, we actually use up the off peak within 2-3 weeks.
