      funny that..

      http://digitalrightswatch.org.au/2017/04/12/get-a-vpn/

Excerpt: From 13 April 2017, all Australian telecommunication providers are required to collect your metadata and provide it to your Government. Many interactions we have in the digital world are being collected and stored by our communications providers, all without adequate safeguards. This program requires no warrants, has very little oversight and has received condemnation from human rights experts worldwide.

    • Pffft RetroPie does it better.

    • KeepSolid Inc. does NOT collect and log any user activities while using any of their VPN services, except the total amount of web traffic for each session and session dates, for displaying them in user’s web cabinet and within the VPN client apps. KeepSolid Inc. also stores the encrypted information about the amount of connected devices for each account, as the maximum permitted amount is limited. This information can be assessed in the User’s Office, where any user can delete their devices from their account. Source

  • Anybody familiar with VPN business?
I have been seeing similar lifetime deals and wondered how these companies makes money (eg, does most of them sell your browsing history?)

    • Exactly what everyone else is wondering. How is it worth it to keep providing me a service when you're getting less than a few dollars per year from it?

      • +1

Doesn't seems like a great business model for the long-term. Perhaps short term profits and flick the company and start another.

        • In which case they know that "lifetime" will mean a couple of years at most. I'd avoid and stick with well known and reputable.

        • +1

It's lifetime of the service not your lifetime …..Software goes end of life, end of support , and so do services ….New services are created …. And you need to re subscribe.

        • @garage sale: I never said it was my lifetime. Usually thought the assumption is that lifetime implies the service will be around a while, not going to drop off in a few years.

      • This is my personal opinion
        * Upselling. Generally they will persuade you to upgrade to their 'premium' or 'pro' plan with discount
        * Non refundable fee. If you dislike this provider, then bad luck. Some of them provide trial account, however the trial will usually give you their top tier so the experience might not be the same.
        * You have to redeem the voucher code within limited time period. If you forget to do it, then you won't be able to use it anymore.

These guys also have a 5 device limit. Other provides have unlimited devices but 5 active connection limit.

The 5 device limit is can be increased as an add-on per month fee.
You can only remove one device from the device list every 7 days.

        • +2

You can only remove one device from the device list every 7 days.

          What a stupid (profanity) restriction.

        • @potplanty: Yeah, seems designed to annoy their customers.

        • I read it at first as 5 devices at a time, not hardware limited to 5 devices.
I guess that is how they make more money and offer the 'lifetime' deals.

  • Seems VPNs are a hot commodity in 2017 with govt tracking and P2P block. I will buy soon.

    Bummer! Overpaid $9!

If anyone used a Synology NAS and would like to get this VPN working you can find details here: https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?t=129377

    • Whats the benefit of setting this up, I already have Synology setup as a VPN server for OpenVPN client connections. Are you directing all you LAN traffic to NAS so it's effectively acting as VPN gateway for internet?

      • I use the Synology DownloadStation through the VPN Client in DSM.

    • how fast can you dl torrents?

      • Luxembourg P2P allowed server. Was getting 4MB/s on a well seeded Linux Distro.

        • thats pretty fast!

  • Anyone used this VPN for P2P? How does it compare to the likes of Nord or PIA?

    • Says the Australian Node is browsing only so I guess no P2P unless you connect to one of their international nodes?

      • Yes, They only allow limited nodes in US and some other international places to use P2P.

    • I tested yesterday using the Luxembourg P2P allowed server. Was getting 4MB/s on a well seeded Linux Distro.
So about 1/4 the speed of NBN 100/40. Not bad for overseas P2P traffic!

Using the Sydney server for http traffic, speeds were in the 90mbps range. So, very good!

      • Try the US node.. I was using TigerVPN, connected to US node (can't remember which one) and got around 50mbps (same NBN plan). Which Linux distro you tried to download? I will give it a try tonight..

Can one use this for American Netflix?

    • I don't have one so can't really test. Sorry..

    • Most well know VPNs are blocked by Netflix.

    • don't work

  • just bit confuse with so many vpn deals around. we yet have vpn but feel like need one.

it is a requirement these days to have it for safe surfing? not saying our surf experience is great but not have major issue.

what really have vpn can help you safe surfing?

    • VPN will enable you to create a secure connection to another network over the Internet. It is not guaranteed 100% safe as it is also depending on the other network's security. You will need to find a good reliable provider who: not logging your activities, not selling your data, use a good encryption to secure the connection, has node close to where you live. If you really concern about your privacy then yes, VPN is a great first step to achieve this. If not, don't bother. VPN will slow down your connection as it has to encrypt your data.

      • ok. how much slower on vpn? can we still watch live streaming if accepting lower quality?

        • Depending on which node you connected to. If you connect to AU node, I noticed around 40% drop for my speed. If you connect to US node, it will be more than that.

    • Might be because the deadline for your ISP to start collecting all your metadata was only the other day.

This metadata can be released to a variety of organisations without a warrant. Some of those who applied to be on that list include local councils, RSPCA and various horse and dog racing outfits. If you don't want them perusing your life online for whatever reason a VPN helps you to keep ones privacy. I don't think it matters if the VPN keeps some info or not as the organisations won't be applying to them, just your ISP which will still have some info but not much.
Most people have no intention of breaking the law and being pursued beyond this schemes reach so having a watertight VPN is not needed.

The Australian government has put in place measures that now track every single thing you do on the internet. A lot of people (including human rights watchdogs) have decried this move as a blatant violation of privacy (rightfully so, as it is). Basically use a VPN if you don't want the government to be able to spy on everything you do (because (profanity) them, why should they be able to).

      • It's the first step in the NWO. America is way ahead of us.

  • this is ok for a backup VPN, but it's bloody slow.

How do these VPN's make money?
    1) They keep sending advert notification trying to entice you to upgrade.
    2) They probably track & sell your online your movements (whether it's just DNS lookups or actual URL/torrents/etc).Because you're tunneling all your traffic through them, it's much more effective then cookies.
    3) They hope you'll refer other people to them.
    4) Quite a few of them are probably funded by security organisation, so they can keep track of people.

These guys are ok, and even if you get 3yrs out of them, then you've gotten value for money.

    • What are you doing that is slow? I didn't have issues.

    • I experienced the same thing before and after speaking with their support team, they suggested to not using optimal server option but instead choose one from the list manually. It helps my speed and stability now.

      • I always chose the location I wanted to be in.

Mostly UK (to d/l TV shows), or even some US TV via LA/LV servers).

d/l say Graham Norton (50min show) via UK servers in iPlayer would generally take over 60mins (for ~500mb) I endured that from Nov-Feb as my oterh providers were banned from BBC. then I used ivacy and that cut the time in half. But because I can split tunnel apps with Ivacy (i.e. make the iplayer use the UK VPN), I can just stream it to my toy & then cast my screen to my TV - so problem solved.

I also tried them with Livestream & some Indian channels, but it just buffered endlessly. (smartDNS works much better of course), but where as IBvpn, Torguard, etc worked with little or no buffering.

  • I'm using a free VPN called Windscribe. No intrusive ads and you get 10gb free per month.

    • -1

      You are the product.

    • If you are ok with the Windscribe speed, why not get this deal for 50GB per month? For me, Windscribe is too slow. Had to wait even to load a short YouTube video, so prefer to use this instead.

      • Claimed. Thank you :)
I only enable VPN when doing certain things on the internet so slow down is not a huge bother.

  • Looked at their site and features say "By default you can register up to 5 devices on your account and login to VPN Unlimited from them simultaneously." However in the Ts & Cs it says:
    "4. USAGE RESTRICTIONS
Your registered account is intended for your sole use; the simultaneous use by two or more individuals is forbidden."

A bit tricky. So if we want to connect 2 or more PCs on the one account it is forbidden? Anyone tried it?

    • I use Chrome plugin at work (can't install the standalone software on work computer), also installed on my personal laptop, PC and mobile. Right now I have the VPN on my mobile and my Google Chrome plugin activated simultaneously. No problem so far. I think the point is there just to avoid you sharing your login with your mate.

      • Great, thanks for that. How are you finding the speed? Tossing up between VPN Unlim and PureVPN (more expensive but reviews very positive on speed)

        • Hardly notice any difference with regular browsing (Chrome plugin) at my work. It is actually a tad faster. Without VPN I got 48ms ping, 11.88Mbps download and 14.85Mpbs upload. With VPN unlimited Chrome plugin, I got 15ms ping, 14.53Mbps download and 14.96Mbps upload.

        • @flickr:
Interesting, surprising stats. Makes me think not worth paying extra for "premium" service with something like PureVPN.
          Thanks.
