Weight Bench + Barbell + 36kg Free-Weights for $98 @ BIG W

251

Sports XLNCE Weight Bench. Includes 36 kg of weights, barbell and bench.

For reference, fitness stores in my area tend to sell free-weights for $2.50-$3.00 per kilogram. So in this case you're buying the 36 kg of weights and getting the other items practically for free.

Not available at the following BIG W stores: QV Melbourne, Canberra City, Brisbane CBD

DISCLAIMER: This is an ENTRY LEVEL set up with a STANDARD (not olympic) barbell. Get something sturdier if you want to get serious with weight lifting.

  • Can you easily buy more weights to put on this?

Does it fold away easily, anyone know?

    • Yes you can buy additional free-weights at just about any fitness store that sells weight equipment. BIG W sells free-weights separately too but I think they were about $3.50/kg which is a bit on the expensive side.

      • DId you get one? Whats the quality like?

      • So basically any separate weights fit on this? Cool.

Might head on down and grab one.

        • As long as the weights are std sized, not Olympic.

Does the ACCC know that BigW are charging for supposedly "free" weights? That dog won't hunt, Monsignor!!! :p

    i bench 50

    • +1

      Thats not much at all.

      You could buy 2 sets?

    • +1

      WOW!

    • +1

      pounds?

    • I can only do about 20kg before i'm puffed out

      • +3

Better than me, I'm only curling dunny-roll tubes with cinnamon donuts on each end…I figure if I work hard & play the "Rocky" theme & "Eye of the Tiger" enough, I might be able to work my way up through glazed to iced! Of course, a PB will require sprinkles! :p

  • this is really cheap. going to buy one tomorrow.

  • Awesome price!

  • From memory this was the same price 6 months ago on special, also the bar is max weigtht 50kg or maybe it was 80kg can anyone confirm the wieght the bar can handle ?

Think i might actually get it this time if the boss approves…

    • +1

oh guess it's been six months since last time i thought about doing some workout lol

    • Yeah I think you're right. I have one of these at home, its not the sturdiest of builds, even with the max weights on it now it kinda curves in the middle… haha

  • +4

Those wanting to add more weight to the bench, better check what the max is that the bench can hold up. I know it's steel and all, but if it was made for the 36kilo barbell, you might just break it and injure yourself if you chuck 75 kilos + on it.

    • +1

Steel bars will just bend out of shape (and not bend back) if you overload them.

  • +2

For anyone who's actually serious about weight training/bodybuilding I'd advise against this.

It's good if you'd just use it once a week or so but if you wanna get serious you'll find it really lacking soon enough.

I bought my first bench for $250, it was rubbish, then invested ~$1000 in a proper set and haven't looked back since.

Although it is a good deal for the weights alone.

    • +1

remind me not to neg your posts :)

      • Awww what did I do wrong? Purely based on the price it is a very good deal, just looking out for those who might be expecting something from this that won't really suit their needs.

        • You do realise resistance training encompasses far more than just bodybuilding, don't you dude???

A hell of a lot of smart folks who don't feel the unnecessary desire for hypertrophy, use modest weights @ relatively high reps for maintaining tone, muscle endurance, physiotherapy, and as a form of calisthenics!

          • @StewBalls: calisthenics is the real deal if you want to get stronger by having a good strength to weight ratio. if you just want to look good stick to lifting weight.

            • @[Deactivated]: Yep, very true…nothing like body weight thru space exercise for real strength & fat burning! ;)

    • Not a good deal if you are going to updgrade to a real (olympic size) bar. That will mean re-buying weights.

If you are going to get serious then buy a 20kg olympic bar and a rock solid squat rack and bench.

It is a good deal for a cheap set, but I can't see it being rated for anything over 100kg.

I bought one of these last year for the same price, its good if you are starting or want low weight but if you increase the weight the bar bends fairly easily.
I just went and bought another bar and some more weights from a fitness store but ended up getting a whole new bench eventually and rarely use this one.

Like I said if you want low weight and a basic set this is very good value, any more than this I'd recommend buying something a little more solid.

I bought my first bench for $300 then quickly realised that once you start moving into the higher weight categories you need more structure. Hence my next bench was $8300.

So for this price you cant really expect much, but if your only benchin' 50kg anyway, your spine will break before the bench!

    .@.

    • +1

      $8300 bench?

That must be one hell of a bench! Solid steel block with foam padding perhaps? :P

      • Built in automatic catcher arm if your arms fail on a rep, tv, portable shower etc… No seriously that's a lot of $$. I am tempted to get this but Big W stores are too far away.

    • "higher weight categories" did u buy a bench designed for obese people? :p

    • +9

You could purchase a decent second hand car for that price and just bench that. At least you could drive home if you get too tired from benching it.

      • that is the funniest thing i have read all week, you sir are a legend.

    • Thats a lot of money for a bench.

    • +1

      what the heck you buy!?

      $8300!

You must of got yourself half a fitness first gym!

  • my first bench press came with a bar in 2 pieces, had to lock em in with metal dowels hahaha. bought more and more weights from garage sales and wherever i could find em for cheap and the bar got damn scary!!

moral of the story, dont go serious on this, itll be fine to start you off but get rid of it as soon as you want anything 50+

  • +2

I bought one of these last year. The quality is fine and also very good value. $8300 for a bench?? i think you got ripped off.lol maybe $8000 for a good home gym all in one. but seriously bench presses arnt even worth $200

i will post the specs for maximum weight tomorrow. cbf now
and remember its not how much you lift , but if your pushing yourself to the limit!!!

    • Would love to know the maximum weight for this bar.

      • Cant put more than 30Kg on it without it bending lol

  • Are these cement or iron weights?

    • I'd say cement, looking at the pic enlarged kinda looks like a plug on the bottom of one of the plates! But I could be wrong, no doubt someone who actually knows will report! ;)

      • They are plastic weights(don't know about the inside,cement or iron) there's 4x 15p, 2x10p if I remember correctly

  • +2

All these comments about people "going serious".

Come on guys, it's a hundred dollar kit. NOBODY buying this is that serious about their weights. If they are, they already know better. This deal is squarely aimed at the beginner or the casual, and for both it's a stunner. +ve from me.

    WATCH OUT!
I got this 3 years ago from KMart for $50 and its terrible.

Bar is a shitty little clip together thing, literally two hollow tubes that clip together in the middle, wouldn't trust it with more than 50KG before the.

Bench was kid-sized but still works better than 3 milk crates.

Weights are plastic filled with sand or something, really tacky.

Buy this for your early teenage child and get them to start dreaming of swole, when theyre bigger or you fancy a pump buy a real bench and a real oly set.

  • This isn't a bargain. First off, I got it for $50. Second this is the price everyday at Big W. Last, the quality is shocking, my bar bent in half, the weights are made from sand and plastic and the leg press wears clean off.

Final comment, get a gym membership.

    • Where did you get this for 50 ?

      • K mart had them for 50 a while back to clear stock, no one bought them because theyre shit baby toys

  • Avoid I say (unless you're only looking at training for a couple of days and using it as a clothes horse after that - bit pricey for a Big W clothes horse though).

Not only will the weight limits on these be tiny (making it only usable until you get bigger or want to lift more weights), but the plastic / cement weights are crap. They break if you drop them and they're twice as wide as steel plates meaning you can only fit half as many on a barbell - should you upgrade down the track you;ll just want to replace them.

You'd get more value I reckon spending the money on a decent set of dumbbells and saving for a decent bench (or buying a dedicated clothes horse).

  • i got 1. says max load is 170kgs (including lifter, weights and barbell).

    • Then that's not too bad then!

I've had one of these sets for probably a year now (I really have no idea, but it's been a long while!), and I paid $98 from Big-W back then too.

The bar is crap - it's two piece and screws together, and with all the weights on, yep - it bends a bit, just like people have been saying.

However, I already had another standard bar, Big-W also sell sturdier solid bars (still standard size rather than olympic, but longer)… they're around $40. I already had one of these, so I use this with the weight bench.

Because it's longer, I can chuck on more weights I had laying around from my dumbells (I have 50Kg's worth on there, I'm more doing this for fitness than to bulk up). For that purpose it's fine and it's a good buy… and if you're looking for a decent bench for some serious bulking up, then I'd look elsewhere too - even the bench itself is a bit too small.

  • another thing to keep in mind is the width. these cheapies are notoriously not wide enough for normal benchpress.

    • That could be a feature, "Slim width bench, keeps your abs activated whilst you press!"
