Readers - please give me some of your justifications as to why you need a secondary backup phone.

    :)

When there's a blackout, the backup phone can really help - when your primary phone's battery dying + extra torch really help

      • +9

That's the primary backup. A secondary backup would be the back up of the back up.

      • Buy a powerbank if that's the case.

    • +5

Because I saw it on Ozbargain and all my mates on Ozbargain said it was a great deal :)

      I have two hands, don't I?

      • However, one is predominantly occupied.

    • +1

You might drop and shatter the screen of the primary phone. And it takes time to fix the primary one?
Think this happens more often that one might have thought. Despite the phone case etc.

I have this phone, OK on most counts but the 4Gb phone storage is an issue, limits the apps you can install drastically and without rooting there's not much bloat you can either scrub or move to the SD card .. :-( .. !! PS. there are Y6 models with more than 4Gb but the Elite is definitely 4Gb.

Plus, their notification led is pita. Unless you install a third party app or check constantly if you got sms/call, you would have no idea, since led doesn't show anything. You'd think that is one thing they wouldn't "forget".

      • Having no notification led is a deal breaker. Seriously how much does it cost to put one of these in a phone?

        • That's why I like Bulovas :P

    • +2

Correction to my own post. This phone has 4Gb of accessible storage, the other 4Gb is reserved for the system partition and will never be user accessible.

    • Yup, and the 1gb ram isn't helping either.

    • +1

How many apps are you intending to put on a secondary backup phone?
I'd probably be looking for something that lasts a week on a charge for a backup of a backup ;D

      • 8gb is not enough even for a backup phone, says for example using it as a GPS navigator then you pretty much cannot install anything else, also being a backup phone you don't want its gps app to chew up map data using online map feature to save storage.

And, being an ozbargain, you probably need quite a few apps just to not feel bad when missing out on bargains:
        - hungry jack app to get both the free coke and free chip/burger
        - or having another uber account ready for your return trip to the airport
        - or 2 7eleven app to get 2 free sim on 1 trip to the servo
        etc.

And I can tell you with that storage, you'll struggle

    • You can recover about 20Mb by deleting the horrendous country songs from
      \Phone storage\system\media\Pre-loaded\Music

  • I have y550 everything is great for a cheap phone but the storage size really limits it's use. I don't use it a lot but nowadays when i use a phone I need to install quite. Afew apps and for Y550 I need to keep deleting to make space and installing apps. So it's really a pain.

I assume for this one it the same story.

    • +1

This should be an improvement over the y550 which was only had a bit over a gb free for storage. If it's anything like my Telstra buzz, you can get about 4.5gb free by the time you uninstall/disable most apps you don't need. Use lighter alternatives such Facebook lite and messenger lite, it leaves a little space for apps.

  • Does it still have the $50 eftpos card? This phone is still a great deal without it, but I probably couldn't justify buying it without the bonus

    • but I probably couldn't justify buying it without the bonus

Not even with all your recent netflix bounty?

    • No

  • OP, there is a community member, Op, who is unlocking these for $5. See his post in the classifieds section.

    • Could you please link to the correct page. I had a good look in the classifieds but found nothing.

      • After post I found better to go for Xiaomi Redmi 4A 4G Smartphone at $120.

        • Where did you find that delivered/not delivered for $120? You posted the deal twodays ago for $137 delivered. Did you have a discount voucher maybe? Good specs for that price, slightly larger screen than Y6 as that has the soft keys on screen, but for me the extra$G bands for Vodafone B5 and Telstra/Optus B28 are crucial where I am so the Y6 has those, only missing the 2600mHz which is not so important.
Nice big battery in the 4A too with bigger 16GB memory. Enjoy.

        • @ozhunter68:

          Here my friend https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Original-Xiaomi-Redmi-4A-2GB…

I don tknow much about bands, but i presume that can work well in Sydney?
One thing tho…Curious during vacation time, whether the phone can be worked in Dubai and India?

        • @electricbluee:

In most built up areas of Sydney you should be fine, but you can google different countries and network providers there to work out which bands they use and then what phone to decide on. Keep in mind that in built up areas you can also fall back on 3G, not so much in the country.
