iPad 9.7" 5th Gen (2017) Various Models (I.e. 128GB Wi-Fi - $527.14 + $19.95 Post, 32GB Wi-Fi - $421.50 + $19.95 Post) @ iFrog

940

Hi guys.

This is normal pricing for this place, but as it's a new model, thought it might be worth a post for the unaware.

Is cheaper than other 'larger' outlets and they are cheaper for various models which are just released. Some storage capacities are out of stock, but most are available.

i.e.,

32gb iPad 9.7 Gold WiFi= $421.50+ 19.95 postage= $441.45

  • cellular= $608.75+19.95 postage= $628.69

128gb iPad 9.7 Gold WiFi= $527.14+ 19.95 postage= $547.09

  • cellular= $711.12+ 19.95 postage= $731.07

Seems to be the higher you go storage wise, the larger the saving.

NOTE: This is local stock from an Apple authorised reseller, so full Apple support and coverage is provided.

Apologies if there are any errors. Have a safe Easter. Best of luck if you decide to price match as well. I won't be adding price matching discount prices out of respect for these guys and their continued lower prices. I am in no way affiliated.

Cheers

  • Anyone recommend a case ?

    • +1

Cases are limited at the moment for this one.

iPad Air 2 cases don't fit as the camera has been repositioned, even if it is a case that allows the slightly thicker chassis.

    • +1

IPad Air 1 cases somewhat fit but the camera is slightly out.

Smart covers that work with the iPad Air 1 are fine (I bought one on eBay for $3 and it's fine)

      • Aren't the volume keys mismatched on air 1 cases too?

        • iPad Air 1 cases that have one big gap for the volume buttons and the volume toggle (rather than separate gaps) should still fit

  • will HN or JBHIFI price match?

    • Unsure about those two. I imagine HN would say it's not a local competitor based on past experience.

Have had better success with OW in the past.

      • +37

Or you could just buy from ifrog to support their business rather than HN or JB

    • +1

Jbhifi will pricematch apple education pricing if you try hard enough. Got the new ipad for 439

      • 128gb?

        • No, 32gb

Ifrog is cheaper if you want 128gb

        • @Advv: but is it only $2.45 cheaper tha ifrog. Yeah I know this is OZB.

Just a bit of a note, I think that these new ipad models are less powerful than the air 2, im not 100% sure but i read it somewhere

    • +10

wrong they have a newer processor which is faster but are thicker, heavier and have a worse display

      • i stand corrected

      • +3

That line sounds like a winner… The car is faster but looks sh*t and weighs more :P

        • Mind you, it has worked for most car companies over the past decade or so, notably BMW.

      • a little bit faster on single core, but air 2 is tri core

      • What do you mean by 'worse display'? http://www.techradar.com/news/new-ipad-97-vs-ipad-air-2 says the screens are the same resolution.

        • No one's been able to give a straight answer about that. Everyone is vague on it. Just "worse" or "I can see the difference."

        • From wiki: Unlike the iPad Air 2, the new iPad does not have a fully laminated display and lacks an anti-reflective coating.

        • +1

          @foxmulder:

iPad Air 2 comes with an anti-reflective screen, as well as a bump in contrast and colour. The latter aren't hugely noticeable but the anti-reflective technology makes a big difference and overall, the iPad Air 2's display is great.

The new iPad 2017 offers the same size and resolution as the iPad Air 2, but Apple claims the new model has a brighter screen. As we mentioned though, it loses out on the fully laminated and anti-reflective features found on the iPad Air 2 and Pro models, which is why the new model is a little thicker. Neither the iPad Air 2 or the new iPad have Apple's True Tone technology on board.

the 2017 iPad does indeed lack that display coating and is not laminated to the cover glass. What this means is that there will be a visible air gap between the display and the glass, while the display will also be more reflective than the iPad Air 2 was.

Apple does say, however, that the new iPad features a brighter display than its predecessor, but specific information here is unclear. Nevertheless, it sounds somewhat akin to the 9.7-inch iPad Pro and its display.

The Air 2 was the first iPad to feature anti-reflective coating on the display and lamination directly to the cover glass, so this is very much a step back on Apple’s part, but likely a way to keep the price of the new model as low as possible.

        • @thelastnoob: Do iPhones and Galaxies have lamination? Because I'm pretty sure those are reflective too. Anything with a polished surface is going to be reflective.

        • +1

          @lostn:
It's between the glass and the panel. With lamination there's no air in between, without there is air and sometimes there might even be dust in there if not carefully put together.
Without lamination the upside is if the glass is cracked you can essentially replace just the glass and keep using the LCD panel (or vice versa, keep glass and change lcd if lcd is dead), downside is that the display quality just isn't as good with air in between.
Laminated screens you have to change the whole lot when cracked, you can try to separate them but it's not worth your time and the end result is no good.

E.g. The ipad mini 2 that I have isn't laminated and I simply bought the lcd panel to replace the dead one, glass didn't have to be changed.
My Xperia Z1C cracked and I had to buy a replacement screen that was glass and lcd stuck together.

iPhones since the 5 have laminated screens. Samsung since the S3 I believe. HTC since the One X. Macbooks since the first retina.

        • @clse945111: Doesn't sound like a dealbreaker to me, as long as dust doesn't get under.

I have older iPads than Air 2 and haven't complained about the lack of lamination. Until you mentioned it, I didn't even know they were different. I didn't put them side by side.

  • Where can I buy an iPad mini 2?
    This store doesn't have that

    • +3

I wouldn't get it if I were you… I have both the mini 2 and the new iPad. The mini is getting pretty slow now. Better off paying 150-200 more for the new iPad or a run out iPad mini 4

  • +5

for anyone with educational connections, the new iPad in Apple education store is cheaper than this deal.

    E.g. i bought the 32GB Wifi model for $439 a month ago

(this may also work if you have a student email address from UTAS, Ozbargains favourite uni)

    • Would you please offer some help with UTAS, how to get their emails?

      • Every 6 months UTAS offers four free online courses, one of which comes with a free fitbi, they all come with possibly lifelong utas email addresses which enable all sorts of student discounts, such as the apple store etc

Don't know if you can get a utas email mid semester, but worth checking out (search utas on ozb website)

        • Wow, thanks for the tips. Let me keep an eye on them! Many many thanks! Student apple discount! The (new) way to go!

  • Should mention a surcharge of 2.3% if you pay by Paypal or CC

    • Should be reported to paypal as it clearly violates the t&c's

      • Oh that's interesting… which particular T/C is that?

      • +1

PayPal's October 2016 change to the User Agreement allows sellers to impose a surcharge.

11.2(c) represent and warrant that you will not impose a surcharge or any other fee for accepting our Services as a payment method that exceeds the amount you pay us for that payment as a percentage of your total price.

I have had success with officeworks price beating the education store discount.

    Comes down to:
    32gb WiFi $417
    128gb WiFi $540

    • Did you do it instore or online?

      • I called them up and placed a click and collect order. But you can get it delivered as well.

Can collect within 2 business days upon ordering.

I asked about in store and was told it will vary store to store (if they will pricebeat)

        • Can you please post the receipt pls.

    • i did the same, went instore and got the 32GB WIFI for $400. (421-5%)

      • Please post the receipt mate :) that'll be very helpful to us

      • I did the same, called officeworks and got price matched $400 collect from store.

        • Please post receipt

        • Hi which competitor had this at $421? Thanks!

      • Which competitor had this for $421?
(FYI, Apple education price is $439.)

Every time the minute you put 4G it becomes ridiculously priced. Don't understand why is 4G so expensive to put it in these are all mass produced in Chinese factories for gawd sakes adding 4G is not a lot of work not are parts expensive 4G is common as toilet paper in all developed countries not really a premium.10 years ago maybe but not 2017.

    • Because they can.

Same reason a smart cover costs $79 or a pen for the Pro costs $165.

    • It's their pricing strategy. They make better gross profit off the 4G/higher storage models. They offer the cheaper 32gb Wifi models to entice people in and hope that they "upsell" to the 4G or 128gb variants.

    • It's more expensive because people are willing to pay (way) more for it. It's that simple.

      • This. Everything is worth what people are ready to pay.

    • You want 4g don't you? Price is driven by demand, not costs, manufacturers have incentives to cut costs , but that's to increase their margins. It won't be "passed onto " consumers until they are forced to do so, because of competition, which is none in this space.

I wonder if next year's model will be called iPad 2.

    All refurbished I think

  • Can I get TRS claim at the airport?

  • I made an order on 15/04. When I ordered, the website said it's in stock and will be delivered with 2-4 days.

And here is the status of my order:

Order was received 15/04/2017 1:27 PM
    Viewed 18/04/2017 1:13 PM
    In process 19/04/2017 10:30 AM
Ready for dispatch 19/04/2017 10:30 AM
    Dispatched 19/04/2017 10:30 AM
    Paid 19/04/2017 9:20 AM

BUT I HAVEN'T RECEIVED THE IPAD UNTIL NOW. (03/05/2017)

I sent a query to [email protected] and there was someone called me and said that the ipad was not in stock and I will need to wait until at least end of May.

WHY IT'S NOT IN STOCK BUT STILL WAS DISPATCHED.

And they have never informed me until I sent a query.

    Worst service ever.
