Ahhh, I didn't search back far enough, my bad. A very good price regardless for the BT model, I've got both BT and WiFi and found the WiFi capability I don't use as much as I thought I would.
Same, I have to call home, get someone to plug it in and then I can set the temp so it'll be ready when I get home. The Anova cooker needs a standby mode.
Could you elaborate on that? I was about to pull the trigger on the WiFi model as I thought I would be able to get it all set up in the morning before work and start it at some point throughout the day so it would be ready when I got home. Is that not possible? Does it have to be running (heating the water) if it is on?
In addition to that, does it really matter? Would running it for an extra 3 or 4 hours at a constant temperature have any negative effect?
Website says the BT one is 800W and the WiFi one is 900W…do you think that makes a difference/is worth the extra cost?
100W won't make a world of difference. It might heat up water slightly quicker but you're really paying for WIFI capability.
cheapest was the kickstarter campaign. ;)
Not that much cheaper, I had a look when I first backed the campaign back in June 2014 and I paid AUD $277 for 2 x BT model (approx $140 each).
yes, but the cheapest kickstarter option was $99USD "founders club" (with free worldwide shipping). not sure what that was in AUD at the time (we were closer to parity), but was definitely significantly cheaper than $139.
so no, this is not the cheapest, nor was Black Friday the cheapest. ;)
Lol what? Negged because I pointed out the fact that this isnt the cheapest price the item has been, as the deal description incorrectly claims?
I'm not saying this isn't a good deal (it is!) - simply that the description is incorrect (and has been shown to have been cheaper at least twice!).
@caprimulgus: It's probably not fair to count the price of a device when it was still a kickstarter project, before the brand had established itself, and especially on the cheapest tier which had limited quantities.
@eug:
Well actually, the brand was already established in the market - this was their second model (and even before that, they were producing laboratory equipment, I believe). This wasn't a typical kickstarter project for a new untested concept - this was an established business basically using kickstarter for pre-sales, as a gauge for production quantities. In any case, it was an established brand - they were already well known amongst the enthusiast market, from their first model.
Secondly, yes the cheapest tier was limited - but there were many other tiers that were still cheaper than this! Even if you missed the limited quantities at the $99usd price point (which did disappear quickly), there was plenty of time to purchase other tiers, which were still cheaper than this! Those options stayed open for quite a while. Even the OP themselves bought them for a cheaper price during the kickstarter, as they mentioned above!
But yeah, I simply stated that the kickstarter price was cheaper, which it was! The OP of the deal didn't even argue against it being a kickstarter, they simply claimed it wasn't much cheaper (which, again, was incorrect!). If you don't want to count the kickstarter, that's fine - but it still was cheaper during Black Friday, as mentioned above!
Anyway, it's all good…this is a good price anyway! :)
Looks like Electrolux bought them out a few months ago.
Apparently the RRP in the us is $us99 Bluetooth, so not too much price gouging going on.https://www.cnet.com/au/news/electrolux-buys-sous-vide-machi…
In the US you'd have to pay sales tax too, so that'll be ~US$107. That makes it AUD$144. I don't think a $5 price difference would warrant the word "gouging" at all.
yeah if you read what I said It says "not too much price gouging going on"
If you read what I said, you'll note that I said I don't think a $5 price difference warrants the word "gouging" at all. That specific term is used when the price is increased by a level much higher than is considered reasonable.
With such a small difference, there's no price gouging at all. Not even a bit. One day's exchange rate fluctuations could make them cost the same.
and exchange fluxuations & lower/no sales tax could be not too much price gouging (well ~14%/$19 price difference last week, which is a bit of a price gouge)
of course if either of us had of looked at Target, Best buy or Amazon, we'd see that the price is $us119.
Then again this is the sale price*, so what is the usual price maybe we are getting price gouged?
Not sure why you've got a bee in your bum, i was surprised that there was little difference in price between US & Aus.

You're missing the point.
There is no gouging of any sort here. You misused the term, that's that. No need to keep defending your usage. It's OO to make mistakes, people make mistakes all the time.
so not too much price gouging going on.
What price gouging? It's more expensive to deliver to Australia so if anything we're paying less. People are far too willing to throw around accusations without giving any thought to what they're claiming.
I've not even bothered connecting mine to WiFi yet, so given the price difference, I'd be going BT if I had to buy again.
FWIW, the WiFi version is about to get an Alexa skill so it can be voice controlled with an Amazon Echo or Dot. I'm looking forward to trying it out as I own one of each, if nothing more than to impress our friends. And who knows, it might even prove to be useful. They plan to continue developing the skill wit new features, so even if It's only marginally useful now, it might just get a killer feature in future. They have no plans to provide any compatibility with the BT only version. I'm enough of a tech geek to pay the extra for the future potential of the WiFi model.
So what do people think of them? Are they worth purchasing at this price?
So if you're comparing it to other Sous Vide cooking contraptions, I think it's great. I own a Kogan sous vide cooker and the Anova. The Anova is convenient in that you can choose an appropriate size dish for the cook you're doing. E.g. I can sous vide a couple of eggs in a Pyrex jug with half litre of water. I like the phone alerts too. The Kogan works fine too if you want a no frills all-in-one cooker.
thanks for the reply. I am tempted with this.
They are great, and this is a good price.
The other option you might consider is the ChefSteps Joule. It is much sleeker and smaller (easier to store), is fully waterproof and has an awesome magnetic bottom so it attaches directly to a pot…BUT it requires you to use an app (no manual controls or display!).
I don't think you can go wrong with either unit to be honest. It's mostly about which user interface you prefer / can live with.
They don't deliver the Joule to Australia though, right?
nope, you'd have to use a forwarder, or buy from somewhere else (ebay/amazon?).
Nope they don't, you would need to use a forwarding service to get it.
Does it do dual voltage? Waterproof and size is nice but the app requirement is a killer for me.
Website says the BT one is 800W and the WiFi one is 900W…do you think that makes a difference/is worth the extra cost?
John, the website says how much water each will do and therefore how many meals you can expect to cook from each. Its a bit of a guess though as it depends a lot on insulation and the surrounding temperature. If you're looking to do lots of large cooks, the extra is probably worth it rather than blow out the motor.
Hi. Regardless of cost, is it any good. Does it live up to expectations? I want a good steak.
I would say definitely a yes from these posts. https://www.reddit.com/r/sousvide/
p.s Don't enter on an empty stomach
Absolutely, steak is easy and awesome. For more complex cooks it takes some experimentation to find your preferred cook, but many of us enjoy the process.
yeah, if you like your steak uniformly pink (without the large grey temperature banding of traditional cooking), go for sous vide and then a very hot sear (either superhot charcoals or ripping hot cast iron with optional propane blowtorch!).
even if you use it only for steaks, I think it would be worth it. (unless you like your steak well done, or enjoy the contrast between pink and grey banding for some reason…each to their own)

https://steakandco.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/degrees2.jpgthe results for medium well and well done are probably similar, but for the others, they are quite different. I know which I prefer!
Please update deal to end on May 14th. It's currently on sale due to Mother's day.
Looks like they must have forgotten to turn off the code - I just now (23/5/2017) used the code to get the BT model for $149 and sale was processed fine with the discount and free shipping (3-6 days).
Nice ;-) I've received 3 "last chance' emails over the past few days, could be due to poor sales.
Good price but not cheapest, cheapest was at $139 last Black Friday I think. You may get lucky and might convince their CSR to give you an additional discount code. That's what I did last time and ended up with a Wifi model for $189
