Interesting mix, to have a carbon frame and then an entry level Sora groupset…

Shows how cheap carbon framesets have become IMO. Nothing wrong with Sora either I reckon for weekend warriors or commuters.

      • Didn't say there was anything wrong with Sora.
There is a problem with it though: Now I want a carbon frame!

        • as someone who has a few bikes… stiffness is not always your friend :D
it's excellent for racing, but for nice cruisy long rides, a frame with a little bit of flex in it can be lovely :)

        • @jaybo:

but for nice cruisy long rides, a frame with a little bit of flex in it can be lovely :)

Thats a myth. On a "cruisy ride" your frame flex will be imperceptible. Its really only noticeable if you stand on the pedals, and pay careful attention. Ride comfort is about frame geometry, not materials. And tyre pressure.

        • @manic: i've got 2 bikes with basically the same geometry once i'm seated on them, the full carbon race-spec aero bike is exceptionally uncomfortable compared to the older aluminium one, and it's mostly due to the sheer stiffness of the bike - i can feel every bump on the race bike….. don't get me wrong, it's incredibly efficient due to it's stiffness, i get a lot more from the pedal strokes and it goes a lot faster for the same effort, but any ride over ~90mins is borderline agonizing :)

both bikes run the same tyres & pressures too.

i get what you mean that carbon vs. metal isn't the issue, it's the geometry, or more the design of the frame - most people when you say 'carbon' they buy it because it's 'super stiff' and i was just saying that stiffness may not actually be what they're after, get a frame that is designed for a bit of comfort/flex rather than something that is designed to be super stiff.

        • I'll just refer to the late great Sheldon Brown, master off all matters technical in cycling:

          http://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-comfort.html
          http://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-materials.html

A bicycle frame is made up of triangles, and there is no compressibility in the frame members whatever they're made of. You've fallen for folklore.

        • @manic:
It's not about comprehensibility, it's about frame members bending and flexing.

        • It's not about comprehensibility

Sorry, I was trying to provide a link with no maths skill needed.

        • @manic:
err .. that didn't come out right.
Its a complex and controversial topic, so I guess here is not the place.

    • And claris hubs to keep the cost down.

  • Is Avanti a good brand? Any sort of warranty on the frame?

    • +1

      yes and yes

    • +1

Kiwi Brand. Frames are made in the same Taiwanese factories as almost all of the other brands.

  • It's for women?
