[Price Error] Mac Pro at Qantas Store for 93K points, or 5K points + $520

A friend brought this to my attention on Sunday morning, but you can get the last generation Mac Pro for 93,000 points (using barometer for 4230 points for $25 Myer gift card, that's only about $549. If you use the Points + Pay slider to reduce the points to 5,000, you only have to pay $520. Not sure if it's a mistake or just clearance, but I ordered one Sunday. Hasn't shipped yet, but should in the next day or so.

Price error (moved to forums): Emails are now coming through confirming the price error. As compensation Qantas are providing 2000 points and a 20% discount code for those who unsuccessfully ordered.

    The T&C are not in our favour…

    9.1 Order cancellation by the Member:
    a) Once placed, orders cannot be amended or cancelled by the Member.
    9.2 Changes to orders by Qantas:
    a) Qantas reserves the right to refuse to provide any Retail Reward, terminate, remove or edit content or cancel orders (or part thereof) at Qantas’ discretion at any time. Without limiting the operation of any other Terms herein, Qantas will not be held liable for loss or damage arising from the exercise of these rights.
    b) If Qantas cancels an order (or part thereof) a Frequent Flyer Service Centre representative will contact the Member and explain the reason for the cancellation.
    c) If Qantas cancels an order (or part thereof) the Member will be provided with a full refund for the order (or that part). Subject to the reason for the cancellation, Qantas may offer the Member a substitute Retail Reward of equal value instead of providing a refund. The Member may decline to accept substitute.

      9.1 isn't enforced, I ordered two using points by mistake, I got it cancelled via live chat saying I wanted to use points+pay. They did cancel it for me, but by that time it was out of stock.

      I think it will be an 'all or nothing' situation, my bet is this deal won't go through. Hence our appreciatiation of OP sharing this deal which pretty much made it impossible for him to receive his order from the weekend.

    Ordered just before others mentioned the deal expired. It shows up under Points Activity as an order but I haven't received an email.
    Also, those 'rumours' around whether or not Qantas will honour the deal, that's always a discussion point within every company where pricing errors are made. In this case, since there's not a lot of margin in Apple products, it would truly surprise me if they would honour it. Also, it's unlikely they would sit on a stack on these machines just in case someone orders one (my guess is they haven't sold a single one of these at the normal price/points rate) - they're likely to be dropshipped from somewhere. Every company makes mistakes, if they end up refunding us (in a timely fashion) it's really not going to damage their overall reputation.

    Edit: on the product page, under Delivery, it actually says they use a 3rd party: "This product will be delivered from a third party".

    [Armchair Lawyer Mode] There is clearly a contract in place as there is Offer, Acceptance, and Consideration. Qantas can of course break the Contract. It is then up to individuals to decide if they want to test if Qantas is allowed to break the contract (based on the T&C or other arguments) or if not what the remedy would be. I guess you would need to take Qantas to the Small Claims Court for determination.[/Armchair Lawyer Mode]

        Taking payment is acceptance. Not sure how companies get away with cancelling and refunding price errors. I know Officeworks lie and say it's due to no stock.

          I'd suggest that taking the payment covers "Consideration". Where I'd argue that "Acceptance" is made from Qantas to the "Offer", is in the E-Mail saying "Your Qantas Store order is confirmed". I would suggest it would be a different if the E-Mail said "Your Qantas Store order is being reviewed" Anyway, unless someone is willing to test the arguments (for and against) in a court it is all speculation….

          @jmone: You're all trying to argue that there's a contract in place, assuming that Qantas would be arguing otherwise.

          It might be that Qantas consider that there is a contract in place, but one of its terms is that they can cancel an order.

          If you read the link you would know that it's not based on your opinion of what you personally should be allowed neg, but rather the voting rules for the community of this website.

          Now if people had cancellation emails or refunds - then there is an issue with the bargain. At this point it's not confirmed. When purchasing it I was 99.99999% sure I wouldn't receive it yet I upvoted it anyway - as until it's confirmed a price error, it's not actually a price error. This also goes for the numpty on the other page who contacted the Qantas twitter PR team asking them about something that isn't even their departments job.

    I think that this is a bit different that other pricing errors due to the fact that FF points are involved in the transaction.

    Qantas put a worth on their points as when it comes to purchasing products from the store - you can argue that the RRP value for products make all the products different values - so why does this Mac Pro get different treatment.

    We really need some sort of guideline for these posts.

    For the OP - well what I'd do anyway…
    1. Wait for the item to be shipped before publishing the offer.

    For everyone else -
    1. Don't buy unless your willing to lose the money for a few days while we see what happens.
    2. Don't be disappointed when you don't get it, getting anything is pretty much a bonus.
    3. Don't contact support to ask questions (bring it to their attention).
    4. Don't try and get a refund before it's been cancelled.

    Yeah, I jumped on it fully expecting it to be cancelled, just in case, maybe we'll get a gift card or some points or something, really just to be a part of it all haha.

    Sometimes I've got the item from a pricing error, maybe it wasn't an error, I have got some Kogan vouchers in the past etc, it's all good, no expectations.

        I mean lose access to the money, this morning I had an extra $520 available funds, now it's in the process of being transferred to Qantas. If they don't honour it I'll get it back. I'm saying if you have some bills or need to put food on the table tonight and it's your last $520 maybe give it a miss.

    The way I see it that they will process the order as they have updated their website and made the item no longer available. If they had intend on cancelling the orders with the pricing error, then the stock would remain in the system and we would have received our cancellation emails. May be they are consulting their commercial lawyers before they send such emails due to the potential claims….

    That is just my 2 cents worth….

      hardware such as this one can be used for at least 5-8 years… read on the performance overview, the hardware can feed into 5 4K screens on the fly. The data transfer speed, graphics card, memory, everything is top notch. $500 change for something like this is a steal… and maybe thats why this may never eventuate.

      I can imagine a Qantas rep reading all these comments and going.. nah, you guys messed it by sharing here. Forget the order and get back to your desktops

          @bellevuehill: Well yea, I don't doubt that would happen. Just that it's pretty clear to all of us that it's a genuine price error. As much as I would like my orders to be honoured, I don't think it should go as far as getting the media involved.

          The right attitude should be hoping for the best and if it gets honoured then happy days; otherwise, oh well, worth a try.
