Rigourous safety check
Aww what, i didnt know there were different colours coming out, I would have gotten the blue :(
Only black, grey and gold are available for Aus stock, the other colours are only international it seems.
Noooooo thats so lame, I don't understand why colours would be region limited!
i would hate to have small hands and want to use the finger print reader…………
Use your big toe instead
ill use my tongue
Also $23 shipping to Syd
You also miss out on the bonus Gear VR and content voucher with Kogan pre order
This is not really a good deal especially without Australian warranty and the bonuses like Gear VR…
Their price does not have GST so for comparable price, Australian RRP without GST is $1090 for S8 and $1229 for S8+.
Kogan price including shipping is $1022 for S8 and $1222 for S8+
So if you are travelling it is cheaper to buy from Australian retailer, not to mention for "professional" you can get extra 5-33% off pre-GST discount by combining with the upcoming Flybuys deal or even the standard JBHifi gc deal
See my post above. the VR, controller and content is worth the extra dollars
And plenty of sellers in the trading forum selling 5% off JB vouchers
What's this about a JB Hifi and Flybuys deal?
This phone is $177 cheaper than retail.
Gear VR alone already worth $199RRP or ($150 re-sell value). This Kogan deal is NOT cheap the price is cheap just because they don't pay 10% GST. If you still want to go ahead with buying from Kogan, maybe I can help you get extra 5% off by buying Kogan gc.
If y ou buy the $1199 that's above the duty free threshold, so wouldn't you have to pay import and customs duties on top of that?
@lostn: Yep, that is the risk of buying from Kogan, pretty much you are the one who is liable for the import tax if customs inspect and charge your parcel because you are the importer.
@samehada: The $1199 S8+ listing says it's sold by Kogan AU, so it'll probably ship from within Australia.
This Product is offered and supplied by Kogan Australia Pty Ltd pursuant to the Terms and Conditions.
The $999 S8 listing says it's by Kogan HK.
This Product is offered and supplied by Kogan HK Limited pursuant to the Terms and Conditions.
@eug: Add shipping to the $999 model and that goes over $1000.
If the $1199 model is sitting in an AU warehouse, Kogan would have had to pay the GST themselves and passed it on. Except you're probably not getting invoiced for GST so no TRS.
@eug: I very much doubt that. Someone bought anything from Kogan before can confirm where their parcel is sent from.
- $22.99 shipping fee is a clear indication that it is sent from DPex HK.
- What I can see on that S8+ page is a big "Direct Inport" banner.
- It is illegal for NOT providing GST invoice if it is sold by Kogan Australia.
I very much doubt that.
Actually it doesn't matter where it's shipped from, what matters is who accepts the payment - Kogan HK or Kogan AU.
- It is illegal for NOT providing GST invoice if it is sold by Kogan Australia.
So do they or don't they provide a GST invoice?
Add shipping to the $999 model and that goes over $1000.
Shipping does not contribute to the $1,000 threshold, according to a customs broker on Whirlpool.
Do you have personal experience that shows otherwise?
Except you're probably not getting invoiced for GST so no TRS.
I really don't think TRS is a big deal for the vast majority of people. Not everyone is going on holiday within 60 days.
@eug: I suggest you go to customs website to read the rule. The $1000 threshold is including all the freight cost. That is your official source that you should check.
Kogan is very much play with the law (to be precise, it is you, the buyers, is taking advantage of the parcel slip through the customs). Kogan also clearly knows about it but legally they do it right because the buyer is the importer and has to be liable for the tax.
Let me know if you do get GST invoice for the "direct import" S8+
Regarding GST invoice, many ppl do claim it on their business not just for travelling and many ppl also plan their purchase when they are about to travel.
Even without the GST claim, Kogan pricing is not good enough when you can pre-order and get the bonus Gear VR which you can sell it and Australia Warranty under ACL.
I suggest you go to customs website to read the rule. The $1000 threshold is including all the freight cost.
I did. Can you find a page that specifically mentions the $1000 threshold includes shipping?
The threshold looks at the customs value of the goods. Shipping does not increase the value of the goods.
If the declared value of the item exceeds the threshold, then GST is calculated on the whole lot, including shipping costs.
This person bought $985 worth of tyres, shipping was $300. He did not get charged GST.
This person says freight is not included, and this customs broker confirmed it, along with this other customs broker.
It has been discussed many times before, along with first-hand reports by people who have done it.
As long as the customs declaration is filled out correctly, GST should not apply to items under $1,000, not including shipping.
@eug: Good to know that :)
Still for the S8+, I don't think Kogan price include GST correct me ì I'm wrong.
@eug:
Shipping does not contribute to the $1,000 threshold, according to a customs broker on Whirlpool.
Do you have personal experience that shows otherwise?
Not directly. But on Amazon's duties calculator, the shipping does indeed bring it over the threshold.
I don't have personal experience that what I said is correct. But I don't have any that says it's wrong either. I could be wrong. Could you find out for us and report back?
I really don't think TRS is a big deal for the vast majority of people. Not everyone is going on holiday within 60 days.
Well I am, so it matters to me.
But the fact that they're charging you GST (even if indirectly) but not providing a way to claim back the GST is a rip off and as far as I know, illegal.
But that's on the assumption that they don't give a GST invoice. Maybe they do. I don't know. I posed it as a question, not a claim.
Flybuys deal? The 2000 points off deal ($10)?
Ok Samehada. You've piqued my interest - how do I get up to 33% off?
"So if you are travelling it is cheaper to buy from Australian retailer, not to mention for "professional" you can get extra 5-33% off pre-GST discount by combining with the upcoming Flybuys deal or even the standard JBHifi gc deal"
The post above you already answer your question ;)
just get a JB voucher (5% off from Entertainment book) to pre-order it….
$1200 voucher = $1140
You get 2 years local warranty and the VR
Just?
It requires a Gold membership worth $70, and sign up doesn't seem straight foward.
and $1140 is still more than $1022.
Some people have no interest in VR. Warranty value is debatable but if it costs extra I wouldn't get it.
If you want I can help you order. I have Entertainment Book so it won't cost any extra for you ;)
You don't think 2 years of local warranty is worth paying an extra 11.5%?
If you have to deal with Kogan for warranty (1 year only), will they cover your return shipping charges?
Kogan does pay for return shipping.
I still would pay the extra for local warranty though.
You are comparing a GST included price to a Kogan GST avoidance price, that is not really comparing apple with apple
Anyone know if I use an amex to pay for this, can use the screen repair option from the card or doesn't it apply to imported phones?
Lightning-fast Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip
Local ones get the Exynos instead.
why do samsung change chips in phones… so weird
On paper Exynos 8895s is little faster than SD835
But yeah I would prefer SD any day for 3rd party ROM support
You would think so… the SD galaxy S7 has a locked bootloader in the USA, only the Exynos is able to install custom ROMs.
I would be doible checking before assuming that
Samsung would have to pay Qualcomm licencing fees to use their chips in US. They would like to use their exynos chips in all regions if they could. Also there's other differences between the phones other than the type of SoC such as the camera sensor. I believe the snapdragon variant gets the Sony IMX 333 sensor while the exynos will end up with the Samsung ISOCELL S5K2L2.
I don't think the sensor is tied to the processor. I had two S6 phones that I got from Telstra, one had Sony, the other had ISOCELL.
Is Exynos the only SoC legally allowed to be sold in the US if they want LTE in it?
What about Apple's phones?
Would it cost Samsung more to pay Qualcomm's licensing fees with Exynos than it would cost to just use SD?
iirc Qualcomm has exclusive rights to the tech that's used for US data networks, so only their chips can use the network. Rest of the world uses more standardised networks that their can support with their own chip.
Looking for a car around the same price as the S8, anyone have anything for sale?
I need your advice. My budget is $300 or below. They are for my kids. What do you think about the Unlocked phones being sold at JB Hifi like Oppo F1s $318, LG K10 $219, ZTE v7 Plus $297 , HTC Desire 628 $249
Maybe something like this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/172567507797
The One A9 has already been updated to Nougat and in general I think it's a good phone for $250. Price ranges from $250 to $400.
For kids, get this instead https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/298788 Sony Xperia XA $169.
B28?
Years ago I got a grey market SG note 2 from Kogan, Singapore stock.. a while later I realised why reception never seemed to be up to par. It was built for different radio band reception to Australia..
Buyer beware.. although would that still be the case?
My Redmi Note 3 "Kate"(Taiwanese, International or Special Edition, sadly no longer available for purchase) , with just about every 3G/4G band used by Australian carriers is a revelation in terms of indoor reception on different sims/carriers in a regional Queensland town and environs..
Now, radio frequency is a big thing I would be checking on buying a new phone.
It would still be the case, unless specified otherwise. Some OEMs like Xiaomi make a model of phone called "international edition" which has all the bands needed outside China.
Samsung is not one of these afaik. If the device was made for Asia, it will have Asian bands.
