    • Mmmmm tasty hot toasty buns

  • -2

    Wrong..Bakers delight is the best

    • Yeh Coles/Woolies hot cross buns are pretty average, but @ $1.50 I'll happily buy a few packs.

      • +2

These are $2 though, not $1.50

        • +5

Ah I read it wrong, its save $1.50 rather than being $1.50 a pack.

Given its 50 cents dearer, I won't be buying any then !

Coles Hot Cross Buns are 0.1 better, and for a fraction of the price!

WHAT ABOUT THE CHOCOLATE HOT CROSS BUNS!?!

    • +1

      Exactly! :)

IMHO they're not hot cross buns… they're some other sort of bun. Hot cross buns have fruit with a decent dose of candied peel in to bring up the sweet background orange flavour.

      • -1

and imho buns with dried or candied fruit in them shouldn't be sold. i hate that stuff. it ruins the bread.

      • +1

Haha I'm in the anti-peel camp, can't stand peel in hot cross buns. Luckily they're in the minority in Australia. In the UK however I could not for the life of me find a non-peel normal fruit hot cross bun!! Every single one had frigging peel in it!

apparently voted best hot cross buns by Choice magazine

Nowhere near as good as the Baker's Delight ones.

I think the ones that choice voted best were the premium ones. I haven't seen those in the store this year…

    • -2

even then, I agree they're not that good.
I would say Woolies cheapiers are better then Coles cheapies.
But value for money is Costco 24 pack/$8 they're smaller, and you have to checked the date to make sure it's packed on the day, but tasty

  • which specific stores?

My guess is the ones with Woolies/Aldi stores close by.

  • +2

I dunno what is with everyone's Baker's Delight praise… my personal opinion is that their traditional fruit hot cross are very disappointing.

Much prefer Woolies - they're unbeatable imo.

    • my personal opinion is that their traditional fruits hot cross are very disappointing.

Try their apple & cinnamon !!!

      • +3

Coles Apple and Cinnamon are my favourite though I do hate it when all the Apple and Cinnamon ones get squished flat or are overcooked in the oven.

    • +1 for Woolies, I find them the best.

    • OK, so I tried the Coles ones today with an open mind (they were $2 after all).

      Not a fan.

Bread was doughy and dense, the glaze on the outside was sticky and made for a messy experience. The crosses fell straight off and the bread was almost as if it could've used an extra 5 mins in the oven.

Haven't been converted - still much prefer Woolies.

  • +1

My preference is Bakers Delight > Woolies > Coles

The last coles ones I had were pretty yuck, but that could be to do with the store I got them from.

And I could say the same about Baker's Delight, as the last traditional six pack I got were average at best.

It all comes down to the store and how fresh they are, which is a gamble amongst all.

      • Bakers Delight's traditional buns seem to have come off in taste a little in the past two years, and Coles has lifted its game. I'm not surprised by the Choice result.

  • gold coast chocolate coles are the best
6 buns weigh like a kilo

    • so for every 6 buns you eat, you put on a kilo?

  • IGA hot cross buns are the best. They make a brioche variety too. That said I will be getting some hot cross buns from Coles tomorrow!

    • They make a brioche variety too

      IGA don't make them

        answered like a lawyer

        • +1

Are you questioning my integrity ??? ;)

    • You mustn't have any taste buds. IGA dont have in store bakeries and only an oven. However their hotcross is 'brought in' and honestly the most dry, stale and surprisingly long lasting garbage on the planet. Please try out a 'fresh' pack from coles or woolies.

      • You must have a really crappy IGA.

        • There all pretty crappy. But there certainly not fresh

  • +2

I bought half a dozen traditional fruit from Coles, World Square (Sydney) today and was extremely impressed. Large, lots of fruit and spice, fresh, with just enough glaze to make them super-yummy. Much better than I recall Coles ones in past years.

I'm hoping they have the special so I can stock up the freezer.

Btw Costco ones are also quite good provided you choose a tray that's been baked fresh that day. From memory I paid $6 for 2 dozen two weekends ago.

    • Nice tip, i didn't know they sold them!

    • Costco still have them onsale until end of this week.

  • +4

Is it made with "volunteer" workers or paid workers?

    • +2

Probably getting paid with the buns, instead of pizza. ;)

  • Woolies' hot cross buns seem to have alot less fruit in them this year. They're still nice and fluffy but I agree with Choice - Coles hot cross buns win hands down at the moment.

  • If you have no daughters. Give them to your sons

    • +2

      …cos everybody's eating/gendered hot cross buns! :)

  • +3

Often 'selected stores' = those that have on site bakeries.

  • +1

Good deal. If you have a big family,Costco also have it on sale at the moment 24 Pk for $5.99, which work out to be cheaper than coles per unit

    Dad joke alert:
    Q. What do you get if you pour boiling water down a rabbit hole?
    A. Hot, cross bunnies

My opinion about hot cross buns is more valid than yours. Lets close off comments here.

Plenty in Westfield Chatswood. There are packs of smaller bun 9 packs in the tray which I think are normal price so beware.

  • Got the $2 6 pack today from Coles Castle Plaza SA.

  • The fruit ones sold out so got a pack of chocolate ones…. will have to be back tomorrow to grab the fruit buns!

  • Got some fruit ones for $2 from Coles in Keilor (VIC).

  • Thanks for the post, OP. I bought 5 packs from Cannon Hill (QLD).
