You only need the controller running 24/7 to use guest network and other, limited features.

      • What happens if the AP reboots? does it need to check in with the controller??
Thanks for the info thou, good to know, I'm still learning lots about these units….

        • Unless you lose power it's unlikely to reboot.

However, to answer your question, they'll run fine with their current config. Only needs the controller for very few features and for re-configuring.

I replaced some generic consumer gear (Netgear, D-Link mainly) about 6 months ago with UAP(-Lites), and have much better range and solid as a rock. No manual rebooting or changes required - won't be going back.

        • You don't need controller for provisioned AP to startup / restart.

  • Looks like the USG is part of this deal too, I'm about to pick one up to pair with my 3x AC Lites - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ubiquiti-Security-Gateway-Enterpr…

    • I was tossing between the USG and the EdgeRouter. Ended up going with the Edge due to builtin OS. Would love to hear feedback from owners of USG

      • I've been using an ERLite since it first came out. Just got an USG to replace it. The underlying OS is the same, it's just that it can be configured through the UniFi Controller interface. If you need more advanced features, you can still ssh in and edit config manually.

        • Thanks cynix. So what is the main reason for you to upgrade?

        • @andrew81: Besides being able to manage all my gear through the UniFi Controller (I already have a couple of UAPs), my ERL is one of the early batches which are known to have low quality flash storage, which can lead to data loss after prolonged use. I'm lucky that it has worked without issue for a few years now, but I think it's time to get a new one. Plus I wanted to get a rackmountable one so I got the USG-PRO-4.

  • Guys, total noob here so sorry for the dumb questions. Slightly confused - is this just a wireless AP or a router/modem too? I've been needing to upgrade my crappy telstra modem for a while now.

    • access point only. You need a separate router. This stuff is good but requires a reasonable knowldge of networking to get right. Not plug and play. Maybe try the r7500 advertised in another post recently.

      • Thanks for the response mate!

  • They work well, few things I learned though: They work fine with single SSID on any brand router. If you want guest or second SSID you need the Unifi controller software running permanently on a computer on same network connected with ethernet cable with admin. Or you need to buy Cloud Key:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ubiquiti-UniFi-Cloud-Key-UC-CK-/1…
These units are excellent with Hotspot management!
To get full functionality you need the USG as well: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ubiquiti-UniFi-Cloud-Key-UC-CK-/1…. This is to fully enjoy monitoring and controlling all traffic and devices on network.

    • You don't need the controller running for multiple SSIDs, that's my exact set up and I never have a controller running unless doing an upgrade. You need it running if you want to run a captive portal though.

      • 100% correct :)

Interesting news from 4 days back:

    https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/03/16/ubiquiti_networking…

"Updated Security researchers have gone public with details of an exploitable flaw in Ubiquiti's wireless networking gear – after the manufacturer allegedly failed to release firmware patches."

"Ubiquiti Networks, which makes networking gear for service providers, is in the process of patching a critical flaw that affects more than 40 of its products."

      • Of course - that was at the bottom of the article.

    • +1

Just for balance in case that article scares anyone… This is nothing to do with these devices. Completely different product range for a completely different market.

    • I have already received an email about the patch. Seems solved until I hear more.

  • "Dicksmith failed to increase some items related to Ebay's CYBER promo."

They'd better not be increasing their prices just before a sale… the ACCC already pinged Kogan for that trick. (Of course, this being an eBay-led promotion might mean that Kogan thinks it would be exempt from the scenario they were previously prosecuted for, which was them raising prices before then advertising percentage discounts to customers)

  • I've got a netgear router currently but I want to set it up so I can schedule it to turn off wifi at night, will these ubiquiti do it? I'm running gargoyle on the netgear, but the scheduler wont work anymore.

    • Yes you can with the unifi controller software running or cloudkey , works well.
This guy has some good videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVS6ejD9NLZvjsvhcbiDzjw

    • Does the router need to do anything during those off times? If not you could possibly just get a $10 AC Timer and turn the entire device off at intervals by cutting power.

  • I have a Netgear Nighthawk router and wifi speakers by the pool, only about 20 metres from the router. The speakers only run off 2.4ghz radio and repeatedly drop out. They work fine if I bring them inside. Can anyone offer advice as to whether one of these products would improve the range significantly over the Netgear router?

    • It's hard to say as the Nighthawk does have a decent range on it. The AC-LR is probably your only hope if you want to stick with one AP.

The upside of something like the Ubiquiti is that you can deploy multiple APs to get stronger coverage.
You may find you need a second AP closer to the outdoor area to get effective coverage.

    • maybe something else is using the same channel on 2.4ghz, I use Wifi Analyzer on android to test…

    • Try purchasing some upgraded antennae for the Nighthawk.

  • I guess a $23 saving is okay (ac pro) , but its not $50 like your led to believe on ebay… Usual price for ac pro is $218 (city technology).
Wish they were on the sale..

Also ac hd is out, if your an early adopter.

    • Nice to know. Too bad the HD has a RRP over twice that of the Pro here.

    • nice but too expensive imho

    • City Technology adds 16.30 shipping to $218.79 for AP-AC-PRO for me

  • Few showing out of stock now

  • Anyone knows about the Mesh router?
seems to be a direct replacement of all in one comsumer router/APs.

I wonder how good is one, vs a dedicated router and AP

  • Will these things work with FTTP? And anyone know if you are able to limit bandwidth based on an ip range?

  • I have just upgraded to an UAP AC Pro running with the Edgerouter X SFP. Prior to this was using the Nighthawk R7000 with the UAP LR. Double-storey townhouse all bricks.

The Edgerouter X appears to be much more stable. I used to have to restart the Nighthawk every couple of days. The EdgeRouter X has so far running for 2 weeks without a sweat. The UAP AC Pro's signal is not as good as the LR. I used to have full bar coverage within all my garden. Now I am getting half the strength. The speed is only slightly better compare with the old LR.

I did try roaming between the Nighthawk and the UAP LR, worked flawlessly.

Thinking of keep the nighthawk and configure to work as a WAP. or maybe sell it cheap on ebay whats your thought

    • +1

I would sell the R7000 and get another UAP

    • I also believe you should sell R7000 and get another Ubiquiti AP.
      They recently implemented Fast Roaming
      https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Beta-Blog/Fast-Roaming-o…

So roaming between two UAP will be even better. :)

      • Need to factor in $120 to run another cable to the ceiling :)

        • Unifi AC mesh :)

  • Hi guys, I'm building a double storey house. I'm putting 1 AP on ground floor middle on ceiling and 1AP on first floor middle ceiling. Hopefully this will cover the whole house using 1 SSID.

I already have a juniper POE switch. Will the AC lite power up via an Ethernet cable with my switch? Or do I need AC pro?

    • in term of POE the AC Lite is better than the AC Pro. Pretty sure AC Lite runs on any POE including the EdgeRouter X series while AC Pro requires an injector or 48V POE Switch

      • Thanks. I thought it was the other way around lol. Does the lite have a smaller coverage and also lower throughput?

        • My bad I did not read your comment properly. Should have noticed you mentioned the Juniper switch. The UAP AC Lite is on 24v passive which is not compatible with standard 802.3af 48v so yes you would need to use the injector. Only the AC Pro is POE compliant, LR and Lite are both 24 passive.

        • @andrew81:

Thx. That means I am forced to get the ac prob:( unless I want to use injectors but that defeats the purpose for my POE switch.

      • No the lite requires the unifi injector unless you manage to get one of the new versions which are POE compliant.

    • You will be better off installing at opposites ends of your house on different levels. When designing a WiFi network you need to take into account airtime fairness. I see a lot of engineers making the mistake of installing too many AP's in close proximity of each other.

  • Ok thanks. How do I know which lite are the new versions with POE compliance?

    • Luck of the draw as to whether you get one at this point. New ones say so clearly on the corner of the box

      • Oh ok

  • What about the new Wireless AD standard?

  • I have a tpg provided modem router(huawei) and my wifi is very slow in certain areas, what should I get to improve my condition?

    • +1

Install AP closer to certain areas.

  • would the Ubiquiti Unifi AP AC PRO 802.11ac be significantly better than this TP-link celing mount AP?
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TP-Link-EAP245-AC1750-Wireless-Du…

    • unifi ac pro is better. i tested both 2 months ago and tplink is now back in the box.

  • Sounds like clearance to make room for ac "gen2" (Wave2).

    (From http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/solutions/collateral/enterprise…):
    Q.    What’s the functional difference between 802.11ac Wave 1 and Wave 2?
    A.     Wave 1 products have been in use in the market for about 2.5 years. Wave 2 builds upon Wave 1 with some very significant enhancements:
    ●   Supports speeds to 2.34 Gbps (up from 1.3 Gbps) in the 5 GHz band
    ●   Supports multiuser multiple input, multiple output (MU-MIMO)
    ●   Offers the option of using 160-MHz-wide channels for greater performance
    ●   Offers the option of using a fourth spatial stream for greater performance
    ●   Can run in additional 5-GHz bands around the world

  • Has anyone received shipping notifications yet?

    • No shipping notification, but received my order today in Perth. Order placed Tuesday night.

      • Did you get it from Star Track? Had an attempted delivery today from them but can't think of what it was.

        • +1

Yes, it was a Star Track delivery.

        • @Silentas: There you go, mine was delivered today as well then! Great how they keep us up to date though haha.

        • @Porthos: Mine was a direct ship from Leader Computers, Osborne Park. So until Leader confirm the delivery / dispatch, DS / KOGAN wouldn't even know. Pretty fast turnaround overall.

        • @Silentas: Would make sense why it was delivered so far. Pity I have to go and collect it from Osborne Park Business Hub, seems a bit stupid but oh well.

      • Hopefully I see something tomorrow. Ordered Tuesday night too, but nothing here in Sydney.

        • Ordered wednesday and it turned up this morning.

        • Still nothing. Messaged DS on eBay this morning and no reply either. The impatient are impatient :(

        • @Chuppa: I received my second order today. This one was placed on Wednesday night and drop shipped from Leader Computers in Silverwater,NSW and delivered to Perth. Sent via Star Track as well. What items did you order? I ordered the AC Pro and surge protector.

        • @Silentas: AC Pro and Security Gateway.

        • +1

@Chuppa: Hope your order arrives soon then. It's worth the wait. I'm already running a USG on my network along with various other Ubiquiti products. You should be pretty happy with it, once it arrives.

  • Well picked up mine from the post office yesterday, set it up and all worked well (apart from a random period where it wasn't resolving DNS requests for wireless devices but all my Ethernet devices were fine, a quick reset of both my modem and the AP fixed it).

Now the issue I have is with the PoE injector, didn't realise it wasn't the gigabit one, only the 10/100 version. Not that it matters too much, as I only have my iPad, iPhone and printer on wifi, everything else is Ethernet. But ends up it would have been cheaper to buy the Lite (non OEM) from a local store, which would have included the gigabit PoE for $139 when I got the Lite (OEM) + PoE injector for $124. Didn't even think that it wasn't the gigabit one but that's the problem when I rushed the decision. Oh well, learn for next time.
