Chuwi Lapbook - Celeron N3450 2.2GHz, 4GB RAM, 64GB, 14" FHD, Win 10: $229.99USD (~ $303AUD) Free Expedited Shipping @ GearBest

CHUWISR

Previously shared this but been waiting for the price to drop. Found a coupon code to save a further $10USD and also give free expedited shipping. Around ~$50AUD less than previously making it a lot more attractive.

Pretty decent reviews here and here

especially praising the Full HD IPS screen.

The GearBest description mentions Android but I'm pretty sure this device is Windows 10 only - a little confusing. Android would have been a nice addition though.

    I wonder which is better overall: This or Dell Inspiron 11 3000 Laptop (Pentium N3710 Quad-Core + 128GB SSD) - $319.20 …

    • +3

My main issue with the Dell would be the screen size

    • smaller screen but faster processor and full Aust warranty
      vs the specs above,

Can't upgrade this one much either.

        True

      • +2

Processor probably isn't much faster in the Dell as they're different generations of chip - the Chuwi is newer. Goldmont had a 30% increase over Airmont at the same clock speed in addition to having much faster memory bandwidth and a whole lot of video decoder support (supports VP9, which is what Netflix and Youtube uses, so less battery usage watching those).

I imagine the difference wouldn't be noticeable in real world usage.

edit: Bloody hell, a matte screen as well. If only I didn't just pick up a second hand Cube i9 :(

        • It also supports M.2 SSD I believe. Which doesn't help me much, since I have a 240GB Sandisk (sata) gathering dust.

  • how this comparing to this

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/297234

    • The Full HD IPS screen shits all over the crappy Dell screen. Full HD is MUCH nicer to use.

    • +4

This one is more chuwi, the Dell uses a lot more plastic and is therefore quite crunchy.

  • So can we just buy a aussie laptop cable thingy as I dont want to use a adaptor if possible.

    • +2

If you look at this image from one of the reviews, you'll not that it has a standard IEC C7 socket on the adaptor.

      https://www.windowscentral.com/sites/wpcentral.com/files/sty…

So, simply purchase a standard C7 cable with AU plug. Or simply cut off the plug and fit an Australian plug (from local supermarket)

  • Good review here (his channel ONLY reviews Chinese tablets and laptops): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeaDRlm1N0c (TechTablets)

There is another listing for the EU version of the same product whose base price is cheaper, however the discount coupon doesn't work, so overall it's more expensive: http://www.gearbest.com/laptops/pp_602696.html?wid=21

  • what do people do with these netbooks (that you cant do with your phone?) - give it to kids ?
I'm not trolling i just had a nuc with similar specs and it wasnt even good for internet browsing

    • +6

The main advantage is being lightweight and cheap. This means it's good for

      • taking with you on holidays. Even if you lose it it doesn't cost much, and it's easy to carry
      • taking notes for a student or at work if you're on the go
      • typing out an email on public transport, or when you're away from home (I guess 14 inch is a little large to carry on a whim, though)

      you should be able to

      • watch movies
      • browse properly optimized websites (like ozbargain)
      • write documents, emails
      • do programming
      • play old games, or old emulated games

Also note that if you're web browsing, you should probably use Microsoft Edge, which is the most lightweight out of all the web browsers (last time I checked). Likewise, you may need to use less processor heavy programs to get a good experience, not run so many programs at once etc.

If you watch the video I posted, he's able to play some basic 3D games with it, so the processor isn't that bad. It's actually quad core, and the newest? in its class, so I think it would be higher specced than your NUC (unless your NUC is a higher class of processor)

      • using adblocking software will beat any lightweight browser that doesn't have it.

        • uBlock Origin for set and forget blocking or uMatrix if you're a control freak like me. Makes a world of difference but don't forget to switch off for Cashrewards.

    • Friend, have you tried editing code on the move? i assure you its not fun on a phone, even with a keyboard attached.

      • This is a 14 inch laptop, not a phone. Won't be so fast for compiling code but aside from that, user experience should be as good as any 14 inch.

      • as with the other commenter I'm very confused. i'm assuming you got confused with what the other poster was talking about - this is a full sized 14 inch laptop with a full sized keyboard, not a phone or tablet.

There's no way it's as good as sitting down with a laptop and mouse, but you can still get stuff done. Especially if you use keyboard shortcuts, you don't need to touch the mouse as often.

        • Friend,

"what do people do with these netbooks (that you cant do with your phone?)"

because android lacks any serious code editors, sdk or ides you lose that functionality. plus a phone will always be arm, not x86.

Im saying you'd use a laptop like this over a phone for writing code.

        • Friend,

You're replying to the wrong person, you should be replying to "juki", but you seem to have replied to me instead…

        • @drojf: its fine i'm still reading.

  • I just bought the dell for uni, and now I have buyers remorse after seeing this.

The dell has no problem with word, excel and writing code in RStudio which is what I use it for most.

You can try and message them on ebay to see if they can cancel the order. Or maybe call customer service to see if you can get a refund because you are not happy with the product.

      • When I say "just bought" I mean 3 weeks ago , the laptop has arrived :(

  • Trying to make a decision between this and the Inspiron 11". This seems like a great deal but I was hoping to get a machine that was light and less than 13" so it's very portable and easy to pull out in trains and lectures to do some writing and coding. Are there any similar Chiense branded laptops or lapbooks that are less than 13" in screen size?

    • +1

There are, but it's often difficult to tell which of the cheap Chinese laptops won't have problems.

You can look on GearBest for 13 inch laptops, and then try to confirm it is good by checking the TechTablets review (if they have one) https://www.youtube.com/user/hendrickson/videos . Or start by looking for 13 inch tablet reviews form his channel/website "https://techtablets.com
      ".

Because of the slim bezel on the Chuwi 14 inch, it may not be as big as you think…

      • Thanks for that. I'll compare some of the dimensions now. I think I am leaning towards the Inspiron at the moment as it's ~1kg and the size is quite small. Obviously the 14" would be better for working and documents but I can't help but feel portability is more important in my scenario.

        • +1

I didn't really read your first comment properly - honestly the Dell 11" (and 1366 x 768 resolution!) would be too small for coding for me, both in size and resolution. If you're using it on your lap on the train, it would be even further away from you than if it were on your desk, so you will end up hunched over it to read the screen.

If you're coding using an IDE you wouldn't be able to show the output at the same time as seeing the code (well, you'd have not that many lines of code visible at a time if you did). Especially for java/c/c++ where you need a lot of screen real-estate, a larger or higher resolution screen would be better. I guess if you're coding in python, and you customize the IDE around so it has more space, it might be OK.

For writing documents, the dell is probably fine, as you can usually just look at the part of the document you are writing and blow it up bigger.

The weight on GearBest doesn't seem correct, the Chuwi should be about 1.4kg (not including power pack) according to here: https://techtablets.com/chuwi-lapbook-14-1/review/ . So about .4kg heavier….significant.

it's overall up to you, I think you can see which one I'd prefer, but you know your usage patterns best.

  • This laptop should be able to do hevc 265. That was one reason I was going to upgrade my desktop with a skylake cpu + mainboard and just leave out the video card since I don't need it. This might be a cheaper option and I will have something I can use on the go too.

  • What am i doing wrong? =(
    I'm getting $309.79 + $9.21 shipping = $319

Code has been applied. (didn't make any difference to price) Picked the EU plug option. Cheapest expedited shipping (DHL-SG) and no insurance.

    • Try paying in usd

    • I'm having the same…can get to 229.99 USD but the shipping is extra. Maybe they've expired the free shipping?

Has been listed as shipped now :D

So hopefully can give a review on it in 3 to 10 days haha.

      • Yay its started to ship from SINGAPORE!

    • its arrived <10days after ordering!! even with this "delay".

      • looking forward to reading your review! In particular people seem pretty put off by the trackpad but hoping it's not so bad.

      • How's the LapBook going for you? Can you confirm it comes with English Windows 10?

  • Ordered on the 22nd, still hasn't shipped yet :/

  • Was researching the soon-to-be-released Chuwi 12.3 and came across this deal for the Chuwi 14.1. The techtablets review is glowing, this seems like a really nice device for the price!

Looks as though OPs coupon no longer works, but the model with the EU plug is currently on flash sale for the same price (229.99 USD) without the free shipping.
