Reid City 1 Bike $249.99 from Reid Cycles

90

It's part of Reid Cycle's March Madness sale. It's still showing $299 on the sales page, but somehow the price was dropped to $249.99. Clearance maybe? As only M (height: 165cm - 178cm) are available, and for the other sizes you have to call for availability.

It's a cheap commuter bike with aluminium alloy frame and 21-speed Shimano. Total weight (including mudguards and pannier rack?) comes down to just under 15kg. Reid Cycle is also doing a current promotion with free light, lock & pump.

Free delivery, or pick up from store assembled.

  • How does this compare to the Aldi $80 bike? Weight would be similar by the looks of it.

Aldi's is a mountain bike but this is an alloy-frame commuter bike? I wish I can judge something's weight by just looking at it :) However with special price of $250 you can get 3x Aldi's bike with some change.

My personal ride is a $129 Aldi MTB I got a few years ago, and I am perfectly fine with it (other than a similar bike is selling for $80 this Saturday). Then again I only ride around 5km each week, which is less than this guy's 6yo

      • Are those Aldi mountain bikes OK to be used as commuter bikes for an overweight, 6ft tall adult? I haven't used a bike for many years and have thinking to buy one for a while, but don't wanna spend a lot of money on one just in case I lose interest in using it.

If you use a big, heavy, high rolling resistance mountain bike for commuting it's guaranteed you will lose interest in riding.

First hint of a headwind and you'll throw it in the bushes and walk home.

I would recommend hiring or borrowing a commuter/hybrid bike for a week or so and see how you like riding.

Or do what i did and buy a cheap 2nd hand commuter bike for 150 or so off ebay to get you started riding.

Well. I ride bikes out of necessity (we only have one car and wife & kids have to use it most of the time). So if you want to do something and don't want to lose interest — just convince yourself that there's no way out :)

I actually had fun "commuting" on my mountain bike, as I usually just ride through parks.

        • @damoo: Thanks for the tips. I wasn't so sure about this cheapo bike anyway, so I better stay away from it and see if Reid or other sellers have decent, affordable commuter bikes.

PS: What do you think of Reid's City 1 bike? Is that a good start, or just as bad as this Aldi one? https://www.reidcycles.com.au/reid-city-1-0-bike.html

      • Reid has a mountain bike at $249 on sale as well.

I'm guessing this would be very similar to the Aldi bike….if any bike experts can comment??
The Reid City weighs 14.89kg. The mountain weighs 13kg

      • It's me, this guy^
I agree with @damoo about the Aldi being heavy, with it's "decorative (IMHO)" suspension, high rolling resistance, etc…

This is my daily ride, I paid full price a year ago. The features I had to have was a solid fork, fenders and a variety of gears. This was the cheapest option I could find at the time, and is probably still. Buyer beware quality and customer service issues that are well documented on the internet, but have not been my experience.

        • Will have a look at the weight on the Aldi bike box on sat. If its the same as the Reid, might as well get the Aldi

        • @Sammyboy: Hey, how did you go?

        • @WARvault: Decided to spend about $300 and get a cheap aluminium frame hybrid. theres a few choices at that price range and im guessing would be similar to the decent offering Aldi had last year with their mountain bike from flow

      • This guy! AMA…

    Nice rack…

  • Customer service at Reid Cycles, Glebe is appalling. Went there last Sat to check out a few bikes. Took 45mins for someone to greet us. They are more interested installing the bikes more than customer service.

  • Got mine stolen :( locked it up using a Reid cable lock.

  • A pity about the freewheel, rather than cassette/freehub. If you are heavy or ride rough, it is prone to breaking the axle.

Good value otherwise, especially if you don't like MTB-style bikes. A shame it is no lighter than the MTB Pro, even allowing for rack & mudguards. But 15kg is OK.

  • This is the best bike I could find this time last year on a bike with gears, fenders and no suspension. If those are things you are looking for, and the sizing matches, this is probably as good as it gets new!

Had the $129 Aldi bike before. Had big trouble getting up hills even on first gear. Sold it off and bought one from Costco (Schwinn Sidewinder) for $199. The gears on the new one are very good. Up hill is not a problem anymore. Thats from a person with family on a budget. Do yourself a favour and pay a bit more for your ride quality. You dont want to wreck your knees for the sake of money and fitness.

  • This offer was just to get rid of the remaining units available. Reid just launched the new version of the City 1.
