Reid Cycles - Boys Vintage Roadster 20", Free Skate Helmet, $84.99 with Free Shipping

563

Hi guys, long time lurker first time poster, this deal is just too good to sit on any longer.

It is right there in the description. I have been watching this bike for my sons' sixth birthday. He is a very strong rider and easily rides a 16" bike 2km each way for school every day. I looked it up yesterday and it was reduced to half price. This isn't my first Reids bike, so I checked the shipping and it was free over $75 (not $50). Then I thought, "Hey can I get a new helmet for me, chucked in as a freebie, as per usual with Reid Bikes…?" and it worked! There are other bargains, and a March Madness sale, but this bike wasn't listed on the landing page and what with my awesome story I haven't dug around for other bargains. Let me know in the comments if you find any other good deals.

Thanks for your patience!

    nice looking bike. nice find.

  • +3

How'd you get the helmet free?

Use code FREE20 to get a further $20 off ($100 minimum spend)

    • +1

I just added it. About halfway down the specials landing page it mentions it, but I just added it to try, because LAST time I bought off them they had a whole freebie pack w/track pump, lock and led "lights". I changed the size to large, which hopefully will fit me.

Edit: I can't reproduce the free helmet, but it definitely did work for me and the banner is still up on the helmets landing page maybe in the morning a rep will find this and clear it up, sorry guys…

      • +2

The free helmet is a drop down selection on the bike page now.

Hi OP, good find by the way :) I had a noob question, can they put the bike together? So I can just purchase it online and click and collect it. Cheers.

    • I found a bike build for $65 on their workshop landing page

edit: but I've never done that…

    • +1

I've done so in the past: Buy online and pickup fully assembled

      • +1

Now that sounds like my cup of tea :)
        Cheers

    • +3

If you pick up the bike they will build it for you. You don't pay extra. The $65 bike build charge is for people who bring in a Big W bike and ask them to assemble it.

      • +1

Good lord that is even better than I hoped for :)

    • +6

      Hi greenlantern,

Just to clarify, both StevieRay & LJackson are correct. You can order the bike online, select your Shipping Method as (Your Nearest Store) pickup.

The store will contact you when the bike is ready for collection and it will be fully built free of charge.

You can find your nearest store here: https://www.reidcycles.com.au/reid-stores

By choosing Click and Collect you can still get a free kids skate helmet. :)

      Regards,
      Reid

  • Can anyone recommend a not-so-expensive bike for an adult from their current sale? I didn't ride a bike for many years, and wanted to buy a cheapo one for a weekend casual riding, and maybe for moderate exercising etc. Is this one OK for a 6 feet tall, overweight guy to get for casual riding? https://www.reidcycles.com.au/reid-city-1-0-bike.html

Costco sells one.. decent bike for less.

      • How much is the one at Costco?

      • The only issue is, I don't have a Costco membership, and there isn't even anyone that I know who has it (assuming membership is required).

      • Costco one for man is Schwinn 66cm sidewinder mtb, price $199.99. For lady,it is Schwinn 66cm lady oceansideļ¼Œ price $149.99. Price is from Costco Auburn NSW. Are they good bikes?

        • I'd like to know this as well. How do they compare to that Aldi Road Bike that everyone thought was a really good deal?

        • @johnthepg: OP dailies this bike 4km each way. The Aldi has no fenders and heavy, power-robbing suspension (I imagine). Both deal-breakers for me…

        • @WARvault:

Would suspension matter as much if I'm only 73kg and 170cm?

I'm after a sub $200 bike as I don't want to purchase an expensive bike and come to the realisation that it just isnt for me.

        • @johnthepg: Tough call, maybe? Expect to suffer power losses and be lugging wasted weight around. If the cost is so prohibitive, maybe hold off, hit the op shops, look for anything used. You can cut your teeth changing a tube or tyre, maybe true a rim from a youtube video. You end up having to learn that stuff sooner or later. YMMV…

        • @WARvault:

Or hit the road when verge collecting. Plenty of bikes get thrown out and it's free to try :)

        • @bargainparker: Sure, if that is an option where you are, I'm regional, so no hard rubbish…

        • @WARvault: What would I need to look for to know that it is a well price or even decent prices bike?

        • @johnthepg: Buy to your needs. I needed a multispeed rig (for towing a bicycle trailer and pacing w/the kids…) with fenders and many points for reflectors and lights. The City 1 was the cheapest bike available that checked all those boxes. Best to ask yourself "what am I even riding for". Maybe look at other cyclists to see what style of riding you want to attempt. Hope that has been helpful…

    • This is OPs daily driver 4km each way to work. I'm 180cm, 97 tubby kg and need it set up "big" with the seat really high and the neck thing up. It was, and still is one year later, the right bike for me, due to the fenders and solid fork. Cheap suspension is heavy and robs power IMHO. I couldn't do any better when I searched around last year…

      • By "this", do you mean the link I've posted above in my comment(Reid City 1), or you're referring to the original one you posted in the deal (I hope you aren't a 'boy')? Haha!

        • +1

          Indeed the Reid City 1!

        • @WARvault: Thanks. :)

Would have been better if the free helmet was applicable to adult bike purchases too. According to the store rep here, they were included in all bike purchases up until Tuesday, but only with the kids' bikes now.

        • @AussieDaddy: Yeah dude, that's what caused all my confusion at 2:00am when I published the deal. I just lucked into the adult helmet working. If a mod is reading this, can you re-edit the title to reflect childs' helmet, if you like, I'm not the boss of the mod…

  • +1

Hmmm.. it doesn't give me a free helmet in the cart after adding in with this bike. Will give them a ring later.

    • Hi Cheap-Chup,

Sorry for the inconvenience there. We had a bit of an error last night that's now all fixed.
Please try again and it should be working now.

If you're still experiencing the error, definitely give us a call.

      Regards,
      Reid

      • Can you guys return the free helmet with an adult bike purchase?

      • +1

        Hi Clem

Only small size helmet left. Most of them are same price $39.99 anyway. Can i get an adult one instead? Love the reid designer one!

Btw i still get the same error.. :(

        • Same here, I ordered and realised my child's current helmet is actually bigger than the 'S' helmet provided. Can we change to a bigger helmet?

  • Free Skate Helmet

How do I order just the free helmet ? I don't need another bike.

  • +1

    Hi all,

Apologies for the confusion. The Boys Vintage Roadster 20" does indeed come with a Free Kids Skate Helmet & Free Shipping.
There was an error with the website overnight, but this has now been fixed and the Free Skate Helmet can now be added from the Boys Vintage Roadster 20" product page.

If you have ordered the bike and did not have the free helmet in your cart, please email us at [email protected] and we will be happy to send out a free kids helmet with your bike :)

We're sorry for any inconvenience this has caused and hope you enjoy the great bargains in March Madness.

    Thanks,
    Reid

    • Thanks Clem, I managed to sneak an adult helmet through on Tuesday I think, and it arrived today, so there, I guess… Great deal and thank you guys, my little guy is going to love this bike.

      • +1

        Hi WARvault,

On Tuesday we had Free Helmet with All Bikes hence the free helmet - woo hoo! Good to hear he's gonna love it, it's a pretty cool bike. :)

        Regards,
        Reid

10.66kg for a kid's bike. It seems too heavy.

    • Horses for courses, my boy is an experienced rider in near perfect terrain. His current bike was cobbled together from op shop finds and he can hold a good speed on it for at least 4km at a pop. He is comfortable with a double diamond frame, like dad's, and wants to invert the bars to drop them for speed. If another little person needs an alloy stepthrough frame for lightness and accessibility, parents need to be aware of that, but this is the right bike for him. Just my POV…

    • +2

isn't the lightest for a bike (still steel) but decent

supermarket bikes are more like 14-15kg of steel

  • +3

    Great price on the bike!

Based on the online reviews, it appears that the customer service is a bit of a hit or miss. Customers are either extremely happy or extremely disappointed.

    • +1

Not sure whether I should give you comment a + vote or - vote.

I had a terrible experience with them. Their head office was even worse.

      • What was your experience?

        • +1

I saw an on facebook 'just mention in store' … salesperson didn't know anything about it. Didn't bother to phone up head office to check. Generally being a dick. More interested in chatting up girls in the store.

I phoned up head office to complain … at first they didn't know anything about the promotion either. I had the ad popup again a few days later and I emailed it to them. Their response was they'll honour it - no apology.

I don't remember the details of the promotion, but it wasn't huge. Definitely something I shouldn't have had to grovel over.

        • +3

@sp00ker: I have similarly experienced terrible customer service from Reid, and urge that while this deal is cromulent, caveat emptor.

        • +2

          @Meconium:
+ vote for using 'cromulent' in a sentence :)

        • @sp00ker:

I had to look that word up. There ya go, learn something new everyday!

    • I am a regional customer, and basically self supporting. I use Reid like any other eBay-style dropshipper and have had no problems. YMMV…

    • +1

Just wanted to highlight that depending on your needs, it is important to factor in other things than just price.

      • Customer service appears to be hit or miss.

      • Issues with quality have also come up.

      • OP wants to reply to this comment to say I went into buying my first Reid Bikes aware of these concerns. I have had no need for customer service, and the quality has been "entirely passable". Damning Reid with feint praise, but it's my acknowledgement of these issues.

  • HOW TALL IS THIS KID ? 6yo on a 20" bike ?

    • +2

Do you guys really want to know? I have no idea off the top of my head, but I can find out, for sweet, sweet, internet points…

      • Two votes to find out my kids height, sheeesh people! He is 114cm putting him just a little outside the sizing guide. Hopefully his experience will soak up this shortcoming but well see in a couple of months…

  • +1

Might be a good deal on a bike, but these guys are dicks.

Read their reviews all over the internet.

    I'd steer clear.

    • +1

Gotta counter this by saying I bought a bike from them a few weeks ago and have nothing but good experiences.

      • In store or online?

        • In the Brisbane store. Was yours online?

    • could u link me to some?
im considering buying the city 1 off them

      cheers

      • Google Reviews: Reid cycles - wasn't sure how to copy the link, just comes up as a javascript link.

There's also a link to product reviews at the top of the page.

    • Had good customer service from them when I bought a bike from their parramatta road store.

    • +2

Have to agree 100%. The guys I dealt with were absolutely horrible. Ordered to have the bike put together. On arrival numerous pieces were missing from the assembled bike. When I enquired about it they said "oh you don't need them." Had to politely argue that I paid for the product. Never again.

  • +1

I'm a 5'3" adult. Will I have any problems with this?

    • I think you could do it! I haven't assembled the bike yet, but I will report back the range of adjustment available. Maybe budget on a few ebay parts. Adult comfort seat, 300mm seatpost, maybe a set of riser bars, or flats with bar-ends? I don't feel I am being very helpful…
