  • Thanks for the deal, adding a $6.95 flavour is essential as other wise shipping is $12.50.

Give me a break, I was following instructions in the placeholder text as I was making the post which says to include shipping details. You can see I haven't posted many deals before. Have updated the deal to reflect that it's even cheaper than what was advertised.

    • or get extra bottles to get to free shipping spend.

      • Bottles cost more than the shipping and not everyone wants extra bottles (bubbles go flat quickly in the fridge etc). Flavours are cheaper and more useful.

      • As a SodaStream owner already, I'd definitely buy the extra bottles rather than the flavours to get the free delivery. The flavours can be picked up in multi-deals at Big W however the bottles rarely get discounted. I recently tipped flavours down the sink from sitting in the cupboard so long ie. they're not that great.

I bought a soda stream at Christmas, and it has enabled me to stop buying bottled sparkling water , during my journey on which to buy I discovered

1- some models come with "starter bottle" which is 1/2 full and some come with a "full bottle", it's physically same size, difference is how soon you will need a new full bottle (like the printer "starter 1500 page cartridges vs full 2500 page cartridge) ……..how expensive can CO2 be ?

2- you will need extra bottles, mine only came with 1 and they are only 1 litre. There are 2 different bottle types depending and are model specific (not interchangeable) on which model you buy, so also check out compatible bottle price at time of purchase so you don't get surprises (bought unit from Myers and bottles from DJ due to pricing)

3- chill the water !!!! that's why you need more bottles, chilled water absorbs more CO2, so you waste less gas and get fizzier water and your gas supply will last longer. Some people complain they use too much gas and can't get water fizzy enough ….. they probably don't chill the water before carbonating.

So work out your total cost of getting into Soda stream.
Works out much cheaper than supermarket sparkling water and you don't need to lug the bottles home.

Seems some fridges now also take the CO2 bottles so you get chilled sparkling water straight from the fridge if it has a water dispenser.

  • "they probably don't chill the water before carbonating."

ooooh, thats an essential and important tip!

    Let me get this right…
The $69 kit allows you to make 60 litres of plain soda
You can get a 1.25 litre bottle of soda water from Woolies for $0.75, that is $0.60 per litre.
To bring the price down to $0.60 per litre for the sodastream, you need to buy two $19 refills from Kmart, which commits you to 180 litres of soda, only after that, does it become cheaper to buy the soda stream refills. But that is only if you buy this to make plain soda water.
It becomes a joke when you start to purchase the flavours, at $5.95 to make 7-9 litres (go with 8), it costs $0.75 per litre just for the syrup, so it will never be more economical buying the soda stream versus the dozen or more flavours of soda avaliable at Woolies for $0.60 a litre everyday.

Not everyone uses their Soda Stream to make flavoured drinks. I use mine to just make sparkling water. Sometimes I add some lime. My friends with Soda Streams do the same. The pollution and convenience is the biggest reason for me. Don't have to go to the shop for bubbled water, and I don't pollute the environment with stacks of disposable plastic bottles.

    • +1

My unit has 3 charge lights (purely timer …. no hitech internet of things going to the cloud and calculating CO2 saturation levels), we charge on level 1 so we get a lot of PLAIN water (more than 60 litres so far and bottle is still going).

If you did flavoured …. you would probably go indicator 3 to get supermarket fizz and that is when the soda stream becomes expensive. Also the flavours make the water hold less CO2 than plain water, hence charge to indicator 3 for flavours.

It's not that it makes 60 litres, makes more dependent on many factors….. so think of it more like "makes up to 60 litres"

We only do plain water …. if you want flavours, buy it at supermarket when on special it's cheaper and BETTER.

Lv 1 is that "continental Italian water" fizz.
Lv 2 is the supermarket homebrand fizz
      Lv 3 ..for flavoured use.

So work out your total cost of getting into Soda stream.
Works out much cheaper than supermarket sparkling water and you don't need to lug the bottles home.

Everytime I've done the maths they don't stack up, mineral and soda water is around 70c a bottle for 1.25l from the supermarket.

How much are your costs to produce a bottle?

    • +4

Cost is irrelevant if you care about the environment. Plastic bottles are a huge problem in landfill. Also the Soda Stream is convenient as you don't have to go to the shop for bubbled water.

FWIW I pay about $16 to refill my CO2 canister and it lasts for months. Haven't done the maths to figure out how any litres I actually get per canister because frankly, I don't care. I'm just happy I'm not polluting the environment.

      • -4

Cost is irrelevant if you care about the environment. Plastic bottles are a huge problem in landfill.

So here's a tip, recycle your bottles and they won't go to landfill.

What about all the other costs like how much water and electricity goes to making the Sodastream and the canisters? How much goes to refilling the canisters and how much goes to washing out bottles etc. So don't claim to care about the environment when you fail to take into account all the other "costs" which are substantial. And what about cooling costs in the fridge?

BTW why are you buying about Sodastream?

Want to make a difference? Drink water from the tap or from tank water in a glass.

        • +1

If if the bottles are recycled, and that is an if, a lot end up in landfill, there is a lot of energy required to mine the original bottle ingredients, ship the bottles, recover the recycled bottles, sort the plastic, set it up to be recycled and then the bottle ingredients repurposed. I agree with the drink water out of the tap - but carbonated water does taste better. If you are going to do this then the Soda Fountain is probably a better way.

          1. You actually don't have to wash the Soda Stream bottles that often if you only ever put water in them. Any flavouring is optional and can be added when you're pouring a glass.
          2. A LOT of (non-biodegradable) resources go into producing, and then recycling (IF they get recycled), disposable plastic bottles. Like, a lot more than producing CO2 canisters etc.
          3. All but one model of Soda Stream machine (including the models in this deal) do not use electricity. It's just a hand operated pump.
          4. You'd be cooling the water you bought from the shop, too.

But I'm not here to convince people to buy a Soda Stream. You're clearly trying to find reasons NOT to buy one, whether those reasons are logical or not. So either use the deal or don't, and move along.

      • +1

Or you know get your state government to follow SA/NT method of recycling bottles….

        • I live in the NT and I don't bother exchanging bottles. There are fewer collection depots than there used to be, and almost all of them are in the industrial area. Too far to drive unless you have the space to store a couple hundred containers to make the trip worthwhile.

Also it's better to just not support the production of disposable plastic bottles in the first place, than to have to recycle it.

$20 for a cyclinder, 60 litres (assuming gassing favoured so you get 60 litres) is $35 cents per bottle ……………..
yes cost of initial machine, etc, etc at $60 with a starter cyclinder

Recover cost of machine over 200 litres.

We do more 1 litres of soda water per day in my household …… my son (10 yrs) has gone off softdrinks so now just has soda water with some lemon or lime.

And I haven't had to lug 200 bottles through the supermarket, to the car park, to the car from the car home, from home to inside the house and have enough bottles taking up room in our apartment to last between supermarket visits.

The question should be what is the lifespan of the unit …..1000 bottles, 2000 bottles, 5000 bottles …… the savings kick in after 200 bottles…..

Similar culture to coffee machines at home I guess …. how many coffees do you need to make at home before you get your money back …… my breville has made 1500+ ( a cup in the mornings for over 5 years) and still going ….. and I don't have to leave home to get coffee or wait in line while the hipsters take selfies. Get the Vittoria when on special $20kg. Environment ….. well no cups in landfill from me. Supermarket shopping bags I use for garbage bags …. haven't bought a garbage bag in 30 years (do people actually BUY garbage bags) so even the bag to get the coffee beans home is used to save money…

Single dad and school fees posses the challenge of how to live a suitable lifestyle on a budget. So what is the cost of avo smash on sourdough and breakfast for 2 at home ?

      • Disposable shopping bags are banned in the Northern Territory so yep, we have to buy our garbage bags!

Guys I've updated the deal as when I went through the checkout the price dropped. You don't have to buy flavours etc to get the bargain. It's now $64.25 for the machine only, including shipping.

    • But I cannot find a retailer who sells small quantities of dry ice. The smallest amount I could find is a 10kg block.

I use tropical cordial instead of their flavours. Using tropical cordial gives a flavour extremely close to passiona. Try it. I recommend using cordial bottles instead, it works out cheaper and provide much better flavours.

We mainly use this for sparkling water and we're finding that the whole family drinks more water, which is a good thing! That alone makes it worthwhile for us.

  • has anyone got theirs? I ordered on 11th and still no delivery. No tracking number and not even an email to confirm order, only paypal receipt. They didn't answer email inquiry even though they said they would in 3 days. And their phone goes unanswered.

    • Did you have any luck? I ordered on the 17th and also have had no communication from sodastream

      • So I've managed to talk to someone there,it took ten days for them to get it on a courier and it'll be another week before I receive it, but I am in remote wa

        • yeah i got mine after 14 working days
          and i'm in metro sydney

  • Did any one else find the gas bottle that came with the Play seems to be empty?

    • Mine was faulty, called them and they're sending a new one. In the meantime I swapped it at target. Cost $19 but I'll have a spare now
