Good bike for those who are one-eyed…

  • Looking to get a bike for my gf for our anniversary, and I know she likes the style of these vintage ones. Obviously I'm not intending on cheaping out TOO much and getting her this Target one, but what are people's thoughts on the $250 - $350 Reid ones? I thought I once read on here somewhere that they were too heavy and they ended up rusting after a year. If anyone were able to point me in the direction of anything superior in a similar price range, I'd be super appreciative & grateful!

She probably won't even ride it after a year and if she does then you can think about getting her a better one

      • Well that was helpful and optimistic of you.

        • have you looked up Gumtree for some almost new or as new ones for $200 or so. Of course if she doesn't mind a "used" bike.
Edit: I meant alloy frame not as heavy as steel frame

    • A quality bike is always the best way to go… pay a few hundred more and the riding experience with be much better.
Two things to look for are light weight and a good gear change system. Avoid the twist grip type gear changers you find on cheap bikes… go for the ones called rapid shift, they have two gear levers on each handle.
Suspension (front only) is ok but does add to the weight of a bike. For normal recreation riding suspension is not necessary. Good luck with your choice.

      • I am not sure that rapid shift changers are a requirement for someone trundling around the 'burbs.

        • Nice to have but not essential. They can sometimes be had on decent spec bikes for a sensible price.
Twist gears are a pain in the a..
Thanks for your valuable input.. ?

        • @xywolap:

Given that rapid shift changers are pretty high up on the Shimano/SRAM hierarchy, and there are far more appropriate alternatives, you (and anybody looking to buy such a bike) are welcome.

Very heavy bike. Assembly was difficult. Spend the extra money and buy one at reids. It just sits in the garage now.

  • We actually bought one. Picked up from local Target on Friday and put it together on Saturday. Too bad that the Sydney weekend weather was too miserable to take it out for ride.

    • It's indeed a very heavy bike. All the accessories do add up.
    • Assembly was trivial. Then again I've put together quite a few bikes over the years.
    • Components are garbage grade. Good enough to ride to local shops & parks though.
