  • bizarre… 2 weeks ago they had a 1tb external.. usb/esata for $79
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/28814

    • That was a 3.5", this is a 2.5".

      • ah. fair enough.
personally i'd prefer the larger capacity over smaller size but each to his own.

        • +1

its not the size, but the external power for the 3.5" that's the pain.

Bought 9 for $45 each from aldi this week. they will budge on price

    • as in you went up to the store manager and said "I want 9, how much?" or they were old stock on clearance?

  • Just went up and asked how many they had, he said 1 or two, said ill take them. He goes out the back and came back and said he has 9 in stock he went and got them. Scanned at $79, said I want them for $45. Yeah sure he said. :) I'll upload receipt soon.

    • Amazing!!! Did you hypnotize him??

I'm going to go across the street and get you some orange sherbet.

Aldi as a brand have penetrated the market quite successfully by providing quality items at a low price… perhaps this is a sign that they are raising there prices as there market share is quite large now?

    • No, I don't think so. Even in the current catalogue many items are cheaper than they were last year.

$79 for a 500GB portable drive (probably Seagate inside) is a very good price.

      • Does anyone know exactly what brand the Hdd is inside it??

        • No one knows exactly, although some people who have bought it in the last month or so say it's Seagate.

        • +1

          Its a Seagate

      Damo,

You will have noticed there has been a big shift in their prices over the last year and like you said, it is due to capturing a bigger market share from the other 2 big boys. I won't fall for it! I get all the specials at Coles and Woolies before shopping there now. As an example just look at their basics such as milk, bread, etc. All the supermarkets have the same price and none of them budge because they know it will generate further competition. It's a rort between them all imho.

Don't get sucked in people… Aldi are just ripping us off like the rest. Just keep an eye out for Aldi's clearance items which vary from store to store.

$1.09 for a loaf of 700gm bread everyday at Aldi. Can't say I see that prices at Coles/Woolies everyday.

        • +1

Then you've been looking in the wrong spot. I see loaves of bread that price all the time at my local W. It's their own brand. And, if you go later in the evening, you'll find all the fresh bread marked down. Find out what time your local normally marks the fresh stuff down and hit em up.

        • coles & woolies both have 'homebrand' bread at $1.09… everyday.

          Item Code: 4901345
Coles Smart Buy Bread White 650g
          $1.09
          $0.17 per 100 g

Maybe you don't shop at coles/woolies everyday so miss the prices ;)

          • @IanPlatypus: It's 650g, not 700g :P

            • @leiiv: Well this is nonsense that that the basics like milk and bread are the same price at Aldi/Woolworths/Coles.

Can speak only for my locals; at Woolworths the bread for $1.09 is only for WHITE loaf. At Aldi it's $1.09 for white and also wholemeal (and multigrain, can't remember?). The wholemeal at Woolworths costs significantly more.

The Lite Milk 2LTR at Aldi is also cheaper than cheapest at Woolworths.

      • Aldi are brilliant for fruit pricing, often a kilo of mandarines for 99c , or banana's at 99c a kilo..
Then theres nappies and pullups, nappies about $15 cheaper than safeway, and pullups about $10 cheaper..

Some things may be about the same price, but i can still spend $100 in Aldi that is easily $140, at least, in safeway and coles..

      • +1

I agree with Swiper. Sure some things are a a bit cheaper at Aldi somtimes. But majority of the time you can get the same thing for the same price or cheaper elsewhere. Just don't expect premium brands at those prices as Aldi sell their own branded stuff equivilent to the cheaper alternatives available in Coles/Woolies (ie. homebrand, black & Gold etc).

MLN has the Iomega 500GB 2.5" portable HDD for $69 in their current catalogue. Picked one up yesterday.
    http://www.lasoo.com.au/offer/portable-hard-drives/iomega-po…

  • Weird, I was at an Aldi this morning (getting a few of these: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/29262) and they already had both this HDD and the $69 external DVD burner from the same catalogue out on display in the glass cabinet just after the registers.

    I guess they're about 2 weeks early!

  • This is the normal price for this item. I was in last week when some stores were selling this same drive for $49. The store in Toowoomba scanned at $79. I did not buy.

  • i still think this deal - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/28705 - was better:

    1. samsung = higher quality
    2. warranty = 3 years!
    3. price = $65 + ~$8

    even beats the iomega imho
