        You'd want it to be ~$400 cheaper if you're going from a 1070 to a 960.

  • Can't decide between this system or the top of the range XPS 15 9560 with gtx1050 and 32GB RAM 4K. Any recommendations? A desktop or a laptop… 😉 Decisions decisions…

If you're into gaming or need processing power, go for the desktop.

If you need portability and like to game occasionally, go for the laptop.
Hard core gaming would not be ideal on the laptop due to its slim design (restricted airflow leads to more overheating). Also you won't get much gaming on battery power (though you can use AC power).

    • 32GB and a 4K screen is massive overkill for a 1050.
They would pair well with a 1080…
      For a 1050, 8GB RAM and a 1080p screen are plenty.

For that price point I personally would go 1060 6GB, 16GB RAM and a 1080p screen.

There's lots of quality gaming laptops with 1050's and 1060's around the 2k mark from MSI and ASUS.

  • Where to install programs etc? By default the OS is set up on the 256GB ssd (c:) and then there is an empty 2TB drive (d:). When installing programs I notice that everything defaults to install to the Program Files (x86) on the c drive. However, given how small the size of that drive is, I'm assuming that I should create a new folder on the 2TB d: drive and install all my large programs there (steam, microsoft office, etc etc).

Is this correct? Just thought I'd ask before I got too far down installing programs and found out they need to be installed with the os.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    • I suggest you initially install all programs to the SSD C: drive. That way, you'll get fast program startup times (inc. games). If you later find you're running out of room on C:, you can then set the storage location for NEW apps to D: drive using Settings > System > Storage > 'New apps will save to:'

256GB should be enough for most users' programs.

I'm assuming that I should create a new folder on the 2TB d: drive and install all my large programs there

Don't create a new folder, use the Settings > System > Storage options (they will create any new folders and change the Windows variables to match). Also make sure to set all other storage locations to D: (inc. for Offline Maps).

      • Sorry for delay - brilliant. Thanks so much 1bug for tips. That is going to help streamline things - especially the settings step, I'd not been aware of that. Cheers.

    • kaboom whats your thoughts on the desktop? & did the cashrewards come off rrp or sale price?

      • Checking the cashrewards info I have the following: Dell price: AUD1703.64 Savings: AUD 68.14

        • doesnt make sense, you sure you bought this system? should come to either $1774/$1799 after cashrewards

        • +1

          @RogueWolf:

should come to either $1774/$1799 after cashrewards

Dell uses the ex-GST price when calculating cashback as per Cashrewards terms ("Cashback is payable on eligible purchases excluding freight, delivery, taxes and GST").

          $1874.00 / 1.1 = $1703.6363 * 4% = $68.1454
          Price after 4% cashback is $1874.00 - $68.14 = $1805.86

        • @1bug: didn't know that thanks for the breakdown
