Adding this back in (edited out by another user…) as this is an example of an item that wasn't price jacked, meaning it is a legitimate deal as there are bargains to be found:

I was looking at this Inflatable Camping Air Bed Mattress when I saw the item picture had been changed (Last updated on 16 Feb, 2017 00:47:54 AEDST) to remove the CAU10 coupon and replace it with a CSPORT20 coupon in the item picture.

While the item picture was updated, the price was not.

I have not bought anything from many past ebay % sales because of price jacking up. I think guidelines need to be updated with these kind of sales.

So many items have been price jacked, it just happens to be that ALL the items I checked was jacked by approx 15%. Eg http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Brand-New-Original-Bose-761529-00… was $222 now $262 and several other items like GoPros and UE Megabooms. Effectively very little savings after code (if any).

  • +1

this time 20% deal not so good, as price are jacked too much. and you are not saving. some product even cheaper using old 10% off code.

Jacked up prices, many items removed from sale. I don't know why ozbargin tolerates this. If someone identifies an individual product that is available for a bargain price I don't have an issue with it but this generic postings are not a deal and worse its very misleading IMHO.

Also the moderator revoked my neg vote. Is the Ozbargin police in bed with Ebay ???

    • You'll notice that every other negative vote in this post still stands, why not read the negative vote guidelines that were sent to you to ascertain why your negative vote was revoked? Rather than spread some misinformation/accusation.

      Guidelines

Your negative vote was made after this (and only this) comment:

"Hoobi 2 hours 22 min ago
      Agree"

      From guidelines:

Any negative vote that falls into any of these reasons will be revoked by a moderator. Negative votes for any other reason will not be removed by a moderator.

      “Agree”

Dude its not a conspiracy theory. Price jacking is real. Oh wait you chose to IGNORE that aspect of my comment

Perhaps you should read what others have said before accusing me of conspiracy theories. The fact the the OZbargin police seem to take no action against such posting says an awful lot. If it is not in your guidelines then perhaps you should review your posting guidelines to negate this sort of BS and misleading practice. If any store this this other than EBAY how quickly would you guys have banned them …

        • Dude its not a conspiracy theory. Price jacking is real

At no point did I say it wasn't real, that comment was in response to the misinformation that your negative vote was revoked due to OzBargain being 'in bed' with eBay, that is false and what I was addressing. Apologies if you thought it was in regards to your price jacking comment, that is indeed real and not what I was referring to.

If any store this this other than EBAY how quickly would you guys have banned them …

That is also false, we never ban any store for poor deals posted by non rep users and rep post bans are automated as per performance based bans.

We have all sorts of guidelines in regards to what posts are allowed, performance based bans and similar. If you have a suggestion for banning eBay posts then take it to site discussion forums. OzBargain is a community website, they decide what deals are voted up and most of our guidelines are formed from community feedback/discussion.

Lets stick to facts please, we have a number of guidelines in place (most developed by the community as mentioned) that have clear answers that should be consulted instead of spreading misinformation or accusations. To be clear we aren't denying eBay stores price jacking and you are welcome to negative vote for that reason as many others have done so appropriately. Please adhere to the negative vote guidelines which were sent to you (and seemingly ignored) at least 3 times in the past if you want your negative vote to stand (which you subsequently did).

          Thanks

I too have to agree that these 20% ebay deals are not what they were previously.

Even with Kathmandu - you can get it cheaper off their website if you are part of their Summit club (which has had several free to join coupons here on Ozbargain).

  • +5

Disappointing that multiple sellers are still blatantly obviously hiking their prices during these sales events.

YES you can. Simply load the special search, then tap "Classic Site" at the bottom of page.

and I'm also being quite lazy

Well, at least you are honest about it.

However it's no use relying on this bunch of rogues to confirm if deals exist and if good or bad. If nobody replies, does that mean that there aren't any deals?

      • Hehe. Normally I have a look on the computer and also the iPhone. It was just me being a cheeky bugger. :)

    • yes you can also buy an android.

      • A jacked up android at that

      • -1

Not many people who buy sn iphone woulfd bother stepping back down to the clunkiness of Android again.

Anyway, Android phones get redirected to the same m.ebay.com site where the search link doesn't work… so easier just to learn how to solve the problem.

PS I am trying this on an Android but I own numerous iDevices and Androids in various sizes. The Androids are usually cheaper, so many people think that justifies their inferiority :-)

Seeing how a number of people have picked up on these dodgy eBay sellers jacking up the prices for this "sale", this deal deserves a neg.

Why haven't the ACCC cracked down in the blatant price hikes during these eBay sales?

    • -3

Why haven't the ACCC cracked down in the blatant price hikes during these eBay sales?

Probably because we live in a free economy and prices are allowed to be set by the commercial market. In other words, if it's too dear then nobody will buy it.

Also, I doubt that it's of overall significance compared to the amount of work and grief it would cause them.

      • Are you an economist for Trump?

      • Well, the ACCC have been informed of this stuff for years so when they act, the negs I copped will be justified. Otherwise, boo hoo too bad.

        • Who informed them? I think no one ….
Big stores can be fined as it is false advertising stating a discount when it is not.
Hope someone got deal based on this.can believe every single item is jacked.

        • @Gaggy:

Who informed them? I think no one ….

Then why does everyone keep babbling on about ACCC?

Big stores can be fined as it is false advertising stating a discount when it is not.

Well, "can be fined" doesn't seem to be acting as any incentive whatsoever for the "big stores" who are involved in these Ebay promos. And those stores are experts at what they do… so my guess is that they couldn't give a rat's about fines.

Hope someone got deal based on this.can believe every single item is jacked.

In this country, buyers are free to compare the offers from companies and make their own decision about which company they purchase from. The government doesn't force buyers to buy from particular places, nor force vendors to sell at certain prices. This is based on the principle that Buyers are not idiots, so they are perfectly capable of deciding where to buy and how much to pay.

Doesn't matter where you are buying from, consumers should not just accept that the price being offered is the lowest price available. The fundamental way to determine that is by comparing prices.

So, during the price comparison process, the buyer will check each offer and then buy from where they get the best value to them. Each seller might promote identical item in completely different ways, for example:
          Seller A : $100 less 15%
          Seller B : $80 plus $4 postage
          Seller C : $86 FREE POSTAGE
          Seller E : $120 less 25%
          Seller F : $140 with $50 cashback

Each of these vendors will attract a different "mindset" of buyer. For example, compare B and C… people who prefer "getting something for free" will never buy from Seller B, even though they are $2 cheaper. Some buyers will buy from E rather than A because they "got a bigger discount".

In every case, the buyer is the ONLY one who is involved in that choice, and the sellers are COMPLETELY passive in the process. In my personal discussions with NSW Fair Trading, this fundamental principle of "Caveat Emptor" is underlying everything. If the buyer makes a bad decision, it's not Fair Trading's role to punish the seller for any buyer's stupidity.

So, when buying something, who would ONLY look at the prices on the eBay Promo Sale? Who wouldn't compare Ebay Sale prices with other Ebay sellers? Who wouldn't compare those ebay prices with prices from other places?

It's completely illogical to me that people get upset that Ebay Sale Promo prices are not the lowest in the whole world. Why so many tears if the price is cheaper elsewhere, what's the problem?

In other words, irrespective of price jacking, how could anybody possibly feel "ripped off" by these Ebay Deals? It's either a good deal or it isn't a good deal. If you didn't get ripped off, why give a flying fruit bat if the price is high, low, or whatever?

The chances that an Ebay price is 20% lower than the lowest possible price available online or elsewhere is approximately 3/5ths of the square root of F*** All.

        • @llama: Have you heard of false advertising by ACCC. Kogan was fined for similar thing When someone claims it is 20% discount and jack 15% prices, that is false advertising.

So your statement though is true for group of people, many people read the discount and fell in trap. Stopped reading our answer after this as I dont think you got the point.

        • @Gaggy:

Have you heard of false advertising by ACCC. Kogan was fined for similar thing

Kogan are a thorn in the side of the ACCC - they do all manner of dubiously legal things, like invoicing via Kogan Hong Kong to avoid their local responsibilities. ACCC can't nail them for that, yet when they accidentally slipped up and bumped prices on the AU as well as HK televisions, the ACCC could pounce.

Stopped reading our answer after this as I dont think you got the point.

I most certainly got the point, but you didn't seem to get mine.

Yeah yeah, in theory what these retailers do is wrong but the bottom line is that nobody does anything about it. Yeah sure, ONE retailer (Kogan) copped a fine, but why have none of the 100% Aussie companies? Might be un-Oztraleen, mate!

Here on Ozbargain there's lots of people who quote all manner of laws as if they are experts in the subject, yet the information they post is regurgitated from the posts of others like them, who were posting regurgitated information as well. Luke chinese lealese whispers.

Yet none of these keyboard experts have any personal knowledge whatsoever, nor any practical experience either. Honestly, it's boring to read the same old same old ACCC comments about price jacking in these Ebay threads. It's always been the same situation and it's blatantly obvious, yet the ACCC does not do anything about it and there is very little chance of them ever doing anything about it.

None of us want to live in a nanny state where the government controls everything to protect everyone from themselves. Those ACL laws exist due to political pressure to be looking after the interests of the Aussie Battler, but in reality the ACCC is is toothless tiger and an exceptional lazy one at that.

Neither eBay nor ACCC is going to monitor the prices of tens of thousands of items and ensure that each represents the best possible bargain available. If consumers are even remotely interested that the orice is good, they will do a price comparison… if they think the price is OK they will buy, otherwise they won't.

It's insulting and demeaning to consumers to look down on them as if they are idiots, and outrageously pompous and arrogant to think that you have some personal responsibility to protect them on their behalf.

          That's the point.

    Thanks,

    • Which ebay store is selling iPhones in the promotion category??

      • It was itglobalsale

I think it was only 2 available (in different colours) this morning

    • Do they have the plus version?

      • I think there is no more Iphone available.

  • +1

As an impulse buyer, I am somehow glad about these so-called "discounts" lately. The more I read about these jacked-up prices the less I will be tempted to impulse-buy. Haven't bought a single thing in the last several eBay "sales".

  • +2

    so misleading

  • +4

Agree with the price jacking comments, the Bose headphones are hardly a "bargain" or deal after their "discount"

  • I thought Ebay subsidised the difference with these types of deals?? If that is the case, why jack up the prices.. or is that only the case when they do a "site wide" code.

    • Don't have anything to back it up outside of what I've read on OzBargain but I don't believe Ebay cover the full discount.

      • +1

It's called feeBay for a reason.

  • Agreed. Stop the crap20 with crap representation and do a sitewide 15% instead.

  • +3

dam these ebay deals are starting to become ex "Dick Deals"

    • Maybe ebay is closing down /s

  • +4

couldn't find a single item that hadn't been price hiked, pathetic.

  • +6

Just looked at Reid cycles - their website has prices way lower. Stuff this 20% off crap it is not meant to be allowed on OzBargain.

    • Of course their website has it cheaper.

  • +4

    Prices jacked.
    Gorp Hero5 at gopro.com = $569
    Price here = $655

These ebay sales are becoming pointless.

    • -4

      Gorp Hero5 at gopro.com = $569
      Price here = $655

      1. Generally the price via a reseller will be higher than the price direct from the manufacturer.

      2. Generally, the price on Ebay will be higher than the price direct from the same seller.

      3. No idea what you are talking about re: prices.

The GoPro Hero5 Session is AU $586.80 less 20% = $469.44 on Ebay

The GoPro Hero 5 Black is AU $655.20 less 20% = $524.16 on EBay

So, it seems maths fail is a fail.

What's the problem? If you want to pay $44.85 MORE to buy it from overseas… just do it.

Here is the listing. Only a small amount of digging netted this information.

No price change for months. Original price was $598 and it was price jacked to $655 on "THE DAY OF THE SALE!!"

He said the price was jacked. Not that it wasn't a good deal. He said that the sales were becoming pointless, which they are.

So it seems a "reading fail" is a fail…

      • Generally the price via a reseller retailer will be higher than the price direct from the manufacturer.

Seriously? Hope you are acting lame… All of these stores are retailers.

  • +3

Still had items on my list from the last time one of these sales was active and the price jacking was surreal then. They have been jacked again this time. Some items are cheaper from instore or their online stores.

For the mods. Reason for neg: obvious/major problems/issues with retailer/s.

Edit: Garmin Forerunner watch from itglobalsales has been selling at $300 for almost a year. Had 3 "buy it now" price edits on 16/2. Price was jacked to $394, then to $560~ or so and then reduced to $466. And if that isn't dodgy and deserving of a neg. and this is just one example from one retailer. I can find examples from just about every other retailer on that list.

Absolutely disgusting behaviour. I don't blame eBay, they just host, but these retailers need their chains jerked to pull them back into line…

    • +1

That's really bad for they have done, they can reduce the RRP slightly making it reasonable for buyers, but increases prices and playing the number game is ruining their reputation.

      • +1

They jack it up and then reduce it so it looks like it's already a certain % off. Most of the items I found were selling for like my above example at $300, now price is $466 and next to it it had a price like: Was $560 Now discounted by 16%

No, itglobalscams, you jacked it by 188% and then reduced it by 16%, It's still 155% above your usual price…

        • They probably think everytime they have sales on, people would buy it without checking its RRP. -20% = 50% more profit, the number game is more like a hunger game….

  • +1

itglobalsale jacked up the price of an item after I asked them a question about it…

If eBay is subsidising these kinds of promotions, it would be in their best interests to prevent participating retailers from price jacking. Maybe by not allowing retailers to increase the price starting from a few weeks before the promotion until it's finished.

    • Maybe by not allowing retailers to increase the price starting from a few weeks before the promotion until it's finished.

Ermmmm… eBay earns it's income by listing for free and charging a percentage fee on the total invoice value…. so if you think about it….

      • I'm assuming eBay subsides a significant portion of the discount, so the extra percentage fee they get is probably less than the extra subsidy after the price hike. Unless the purchaser hits the discount cap.

And the price jacking results in less purchasers and creates badwill. Which defeats the whole purpose of this promotion.

        • -3

And the price jacking results in less purchasers and creates badwill. Which defeats the whole purpose of this promotion.

And eBay is one of the most successful online selling venues in the world. They have thousands of staff who's role in life is to ensure that every single thing that Ebay does is carefully designed to be in their best interest. So, you can be assured that eBay doesn't care about adverse outcomes of the things that you mention. They have considered the scenarios that you mention (which are dead obvious) and allowed for them in their value judgement.

It's the same "logic" that they use to justify adding advertisements from outside companies on Ebay listings, and using an API so that the item on the listing page AND the sales history of the viewer are provided to the advertiser. In this way it allows the outsider to serve an advert that is for the IDENTICAL item at a store (eg: Banggood) where the viewer has purchased from before.

Ebay generates their income from commissions of (say) 8% on the sale of the product. They have a potential buyer who is viewing a product listing… so what Ebay does is pump adverts that actively drive buyers OFF the Ebay site. There are off-site links in search results and in "you ay be interested in these…" promotions - there are links everywhere!

There is even a large advertising block on the top right side of every single ebay page that completely locks up your web browser from even loading the ebay page until it has loaded and displayed first. In the background that block communicates your purchases, buying habits, and whatever to the advertising provider, and you aren't even allowed to scroll the page that you loaded on Ebay! That outside advert is MORE important to Ebay than any products that are listed for sale on Ebay.

They are a absolute bunch of tossers.

That said, there is no way in the world that they actually want to be giving away 15% or 20% of sale when they only generate 6 or 8% of sale from the seller. If these promo sales are successful, eBay loses money. They never try to do that.

So, there is not one aspect of these promos that hasn't been carefully analysed and structured to ensure that ebay maximises their profits. Sellers jacking their prices mean that buyers are turned away… that is GOOD (less loss of profit). Generating inwards site traffic because 217 mindless idiots on Ozbargain voted Positive to this deal and hence promoted it onto the front page… that is good.

Good because Ebay doesn't give a rats arse whether that inward traffic created by 217 mentally challenged Ozbargain Pos-voters actually generates any sales. They almost certainly hope that it doesn't generate sales. Primarily what they want is that punters see the adverts for outside sites (generating income they never had before).

Ebay loves that 217 brain dead positive voting Ozbargainer sheep generated visits from Punters who will see the high prices of Ebay Sellers and see the adverts and CLICK ON THE ADVERTS and go to the advertsier's site and buy the product there (rather than from the eBay seller in the promo). See, Ebay considers that scenario is worth than a sale made through their own site.

As I said, Ebay are a absolute bunch of tossers.

  • +1

Are we allowed to neg a deal due to persistent price jacking?

    For example, seller itglobalsale

Before the sale AND for the first day or two:

    Garmin Forerunner 235 sports watch/tracker was $394.

Now price has been increased to $466.

    • Yes

  • you have to be quick when they push the sale out if you want to get a deal, I got a pcbyte PC with upgrades for $3k after the discount which would have cost me about $3700 to buy the same model at MSY.

they subsequently pulled the listing a couple of days into the sale :D

    • -1

they subsequently pulled the listing a couple of days into the sale :D

The subsequently sold all the items listed a couple of days into the sale.

      • The subsequently sold all the items listed a couple of days into the sale.

They subsequently pulled the listing a couple of days into the sale…

I had several items on my list for things such as fitness bands and watches and of the items that were not jacked to the hilt, other items were indeed "pulled" or just disappeared. Some had stock levels of "more than 10" with X amount sold and were pulled with the "X" amount sold remaining the same but were made out as "no longer available."

So, again, like usual, you are wrong. I can understand now why I usually have your posts blocked…

        • Some had stock levels of "more than 10" with X amount sold and were pulled with the "X" amount sold remaining the same but were made out as "no longer available."

Maybe they sold them via their own website?

The quantity available is zero, there's no more, that's the end of them, they sold everything, nada, all gone. (◞‸◟)

So, again, like usual, you are wrong.

I sure wish I could use such charmingly blunt conviction when uttering a personal opinion.

OK, so I am wrong, who cares? (Not me).

Having things on your Ebay Watch List doesn't give you "entitlement" to them. Until you make a purchase and payment, the seller owns the goods. So they can do whatever they like with them, including piling them up in a heap, pouring petrol on them, and setting them alight.

The retailer can even decide to no longer offer them for sale. O.M.G. it's a conspiracy!!!!!

I can understand now why I usually have your posts blocked…

Well hurry up, hop to it.
