I was told when I wanted to get one from GAME a while ago that it doesn't work without an antenna so that stopped me from buying it
Well yeah… it's a PVR device for watching TV so of course it would need an antenna. Foxtel, set-top boxes even in-built TV tuners all need antennas, I was just wondering if an old CRT's antenna would work with it.
This would work perfectly with an 'old CRT' style antenna. In fact, you must use this for it to work at all.
Digital TV (DVB-T) uses your same 'normal' antenna to receive signals. The difference is that it's digitally encoded and requires a STB or PVR (like this) to work.
The quality will be fantastic - depending on the source. Compared to regular analogue reception it will look significantly better, in most cases better than a store-bought DVD.
lol how else would it work? On hopes and dreams?
That assumption is only halfway correct. Differences in the way they broadcast digital over analog mean that for optimum performance, your house antennae should be realigned.
Aside from that, this is a "saving", but $6 or less than 5% off is no bargain.
NEGATRON
I use this for my laptop :P (I found drivers for vista) and it works well with windows media center for recording etc and at least with this i can actually carry it about.
Obviously, I also have a ps3 so this is the main reason i bought it and it works absolutely perfect when I was watching the world cup using an indoor antenna (with amplifier booster).
Good price.
Can you use it on it's own without a PS3? I was more interested in just using it to watch ABC iview.
You watch ABC iView through your browser (with Adobe Flash Player). I don't believe you can use this to watch iView (or anything) without a PS3.
Not really a great deal. Goodguys were selling this with a PS3 remote for $135 a month ago.
I got it like 130 from EB on release… though this is still a cheaper price than most retailers offer it
Went in to MYER to get Play TV at $129 as advertised online and they claimed the offer to be for Myer One card holders only (which is free, but not the point).
It is listed under "Myer Gifts" on the website, is that different to the store?
Regardless he put it through at $129 for me with a hell of a lot of attitude… smells dodgy to me
Would this work with an RF antenna old TV's used? If yes, would the quality be shocking? Sorry, I don't know much about digital TV.
