Really good price for the Dyson Pure Cool Link. Desk 'fan' with HEPA filtration system :)

Just picked up one - hopefully can save some OzB's some $!

(Yes I know its a little bit ridiculous for a fan but the HEPA filtration may suit allergy sufferers and $299 is competitive with air purifiers)

as a replacement for an aircon, how cool are these?

    • Its a normal fan but with bells & whistles - no replacement for an aircon!

  • +2

Picked thing is much bigger than the AM06, at least 50% for the base! Really hard to tell from the photos, I thought it was simply taller till I saw it in person on display and was able to compare.

After putting it on my computer desk it stands out a little too much but at least I can control it via the mobile app if I ever lose the remote & it has the night mode which not only dims the display but also removes the digits and leaves a small moon icon so its less of an eyesore whilst sleeping.

There's 3 different levels for allergy sufferers as to how hard the filter works which is a nice addition. It deemed my current air quality as 'good' as soon as I launched the app so I took the filter out till I need it thanks to them being $100 to replace. My only real complaint overall is that I wish it was smaller & I could somehow turn the purifier mode off without removing the filter.

Still waiting for dyson to make a full body air blade for getting out of the shower. By the time they make one, ill probably be too old and skim flaps everywhere.

tried it in my local myer. disappointed that the wind is so week. at level 6, barely feel the wind less than 2m away. then drove to the local HN which its website showed there were stock (but turned out they didnt). there was a hot and cold version in demo. at level 10, we could barely feel the wind at less than 3m away, but we could clearly hear the noise. for comparison, at level 1, the fan we got from target blows more wind that the cool/hot version at lv 10 and is much quieter. walked around that HN, we decided to buy a 2 in 1 dehum/air purifier for decoration which will possibly be more useful and practical than a weak dyson fan. we were really disappointed, because we did want to buy the fan.

  • Pure link is just AM06 + purifier. If you're using this as a fan, be warned. Dyson's bladeless fans are hot garbage. I have the AM06. You need to set it at lv 10 to get any real cooling out of it, and even still the breeze is not strong nor does it reach very far. For the noise it generates (and it's supposedly 75% quieter than its predecessor, which I really would not want to hear) the cooling isn't good enough. It's not worth the price.

Only buy this if you want the purifier, which I can't comment on the efficacy of.

    • I too don't know if the cooling/fan is amazing but the heating of dyson products is great. AM05 is good as a heater. No small fan is 'quiet'.

      • The fan is far from small. The diameter is about the length of a ruler.

Maybe the 'blades' are small, but that design decision is not my problem.

The Dysons are good at heating but they use a lot of power. You can buy a sub $100 heater with the same effectiveness.

        • I find ceiling fans to be the closest to quiet and they are not small, anything floor standing in domestic sense is small in comparison (and also loud in my view).

I would guess some of that perception is to do with the pitch of the sound that the blades make. Some of it may also be with the speed of their rotation to move a certain amount of air.

I compared the noise between this model & the AM01 that my roommate has at level 10 using a voice recording app and surprisingly the difference of 75% quieter is true! There's a noticeable difference with the old AM01 from 2009 sounding like a jet engine in comparison.

Traditional fans have a strange noise that we're used to at high speeds so whilst louder we can easily put up with it due to the sound being so inconsistent

Here's the audio clip I've made. First the AM01 at lvl10, then the Dyson Pure Cool at lvl10 and a cheap $10 fan at its highest speed (which was very strong and blew into the mic!)

      • Have you tried a decibel app for phone? Would be really interesting to see what the difference is.

        Awesome comparison clip

Bit late but just compared by DB

Now, its a little unfair to the Dyson Pure but it sits next to my PC and whilst its fairly quiet it may have picked up a couple of extra DB

The AM01 at lvl 10 peaked at 76db with the Pure Cool around 68 and the $10 pedestal fan maxing out at nearly 80db. The pedestal fan at that speed though was pretty ridiculous and even during hot summers I never use it because it blows everything around! If speed & distance of air is important to you then the $10 fan wins quite easily. But if you ever want slower fan speeds which are almost inaudible & better for sleeping the Dyson wins

        • @backslashio:
8dB difference is significant at that level.
As far as 80dB goes that can cause some permanent hearing loss after long term exposure, so even going from 76 to 80 is a big thing.

If the air is really hot and blown by a fan I don't know if having a hot blast or a hot stream is better, I would think stream is more comfortable anyway so Dyson would be fine.

Awesome, thanks for measuring that and the recording. It seems like dyson made a lot of progress between the two models.

        • @g1:
Yeah 80db is very loud but the $10 fan was much more powerful than the Dyson so it makes sense & as I said I rarely use it at full power. Dyson's lvl 10 is probably equal to a medium speed pedestal

  • Nice fan but if you want to clean the air in your house I would get something like the daikin.
For a small desktop unit like this I would assume it would probably only as good as filtering air in bedroom size room, not lounge room.

I just bought one. We went to the Good Guys last week and paid $100 for a stand up fan, and the kids put my car keys into the blade within 5 minutes of turning it on. I'm also worried about their fingers getting through the grate. This fan is safer, and the filter can't hurt either.

  • +1

Thanks for the deal. Interested people will buy it but as much of a fan I am of Dyson with their Vacuums, I think that the fans are way overpriced and suffer from a few issues: 1) The high-pitched running sound is annoying & not comfortable to listen to. 2) The low warranty period for such an expensive product 3) The expensive replacement filters 4) The uselessness of the air filter as only a fraction of the air is actually filtered with the remaining coming unfiltered as pictured here. Anywho, it's ok but just not worth it for many ozbargainers however, thanks for daring to come on here to answer questions.

  • +1

I will buy one when I control them with my phone

    • +2

You can with this model and the Dyson app

      • +4

So he's buying one then. I'm holding him to his word.

Make sure you scan the invoice and put it up as proof.

  • does this HEPA filtration system work for open kitchen's smell and fumes etc ? or more for allergens ?

    • +1

Works for smoke & cooking smells so I'd say yes. If you use the app you can adjust the sensitivity between standard & people with allergies

  • +1

With this price i can get a portable aircon.

  • Nice, just ordered one. Thanks OP! :)

  • Finally they realize their original price was too high for a fan.

    • probably not as this is the only model with a lowered price. may be it's an experiment or simply clearing excess stock.

      • Probably an experiment for limited popularity on an expensive air filter. After having this almost a week its certainly not worth the $550 RRP and in some ways I think a $10 pedestal fan is better (minus air filter) & its also height adjustable

        Its less dusty at least

        • Hey backslashio. I think you are correct, the air-filter is going to make this an expensive model to upkeep much like the cheap $20 inkjets that cost an arm/leg in ink.

  • Is this a permanent new price or just a once off?

  • Suggestion if people care about air purification, get an actual air purifier. I have a few Phillips ones around the house and it makes a huge difference especially as I have a small dog too. Admittedly it's not as useful here as it was back when I lived in Asia, but it still does make a difference. In creating air circulation, I don't think it's effectiveness at helping keep a warm room feel less stuffy is too bad either.

  • We purchased two of these (one for lounge and one for bedroom).

They are larger (both wider and taller) than expected and lack of tilt is a pain.

On low speed, they are very quiet however not a lot of airflow.
On high speed they have great airflow (but loud).

Unfortunately for us, one of the two didn't make it to two days use before it developed a catastrophic fault. In the middle of the night (on day two) it suddenly stopped working. There was a weird smell in the bedroom thereafter. No power, no lights, nothing. DEAD!

Called Dyson yesterday and have arranged free return and will then send a new replacement.

    • Similar experience, started filling the room with a weird melted plastic smell. I wonder if this is a known issue and they are just clearing them out. Have to say their support was appalling to deal with. Not happy at all.

      • First time I dealt with Dyson support many years ago they were great. Subsequent 3 times thereafter more recently they were shocking. Similar to, say Weber, one of the reasons I used to buy Dyson (and pay a premium) was the post sale customer service. Weber is still good (e.g they typically send replacement prts no questions asked) but Dyson has gone down the toilet.

        • +1

Yeah, I won't be purchasing from them again. It was the absolute worst post sales experience I've ever had. Honestly, could not believe it! Will be looking elsewhere for other appliances!

  • Aren't all Dyson fans supposed to be awful?

  • Oh wow check this out.

Bonus 360° Glass HEPA filter worth $99 with any Dyson purifier.
    http://staging.discoverdyson.com.au/purifier/?_ga=1.99213854…

    Purchased from 25/2/17 to 2/4/17.

I'm going to buy one tomorrow

  • Awful fans and over priced. Don't know why people waste their money on these things.
