Shogun Mach 200 700C Flatbar Road Bike $699.00 (RRP $849.00) @ Ted's Cycles Footscray (VIC)

42

After many hours of research online and visiting a couple of stores, ended up buying this beauty for my daughter.
The online price says $799.00 but the instore price is $699.00. Comparable models in other brands ie. Specialized and Giant range from about $1000.00 to $1400.00.
Nudging towards the top end of bikes, this was a no brainer deal. The more learned than me may be able to pick up it's shortcomings but for us we could not turn it down. By the way the photos do not do it justice, looks much better in the flesh… metal.

I've purchased accessories from this store in the past, they've been around since forever (lived in the surrounding area for around 30 years and Im pretty sure they've been there since). Their service is genuine, I highly recommend them.

Okay price for those who can go instore but not for others. An alternative would be the Reid Urban X3 for $750 which arguably has better components all round.

    • squaddie, read the comments on the link you post, in particular about being told a particular bike is in stock and when they got there, there was none in stock. Admittedly not about this exact bike, but I found that to be the case in some stores, I didn't have this issue with Ted's Cycles. And I didn't want to bad mouth stores in general.
You should post that deal to help other fellow ozbargainers who may be interested.

  • Check this out as an alternative?… ($799.99) limited sizes

Nudging towards the top end of bikes

mixed altus & acera drivetrain…? not even close to top end
wheels & brakes will be average at best
its a nice commuter/flatbar but id be careful about using that sort of description

      I wouldn't be too pedantic.
The OP is fairly correct in saying the ~$1400 range is around the top end of the market for commuter type bikes.

this isnt a $1400 bike …or even close.
to me it looks like its worth what the op paid for it …ie around $600-$700 and it can be had for as little as $579

Right before he said top end of bikes he was referring to a hypothetical 1000-1400 giant/specialized comparable bike.

A perfectly reasonable way of interpreting that is that he's talking about the hypothetical comparable bike.
Its not the way you've chosen to interpret it- fine.

The way you personally happen to interpret something isn't necessarily the only way something can be interpreted.

Whether he is mistaken in comparing this bike to a $1400 giant/specialized commuter is beside the point.

(At least the point you're taking exception to anyway).

          @damoo:whatever…its a $600 bike

        • @damoo: Cheers damoo.

I have stopped myself from replying to all the negatively geared comments. As everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

You get my point, I stated comparable, I never stated this "is/was" a $1400.00 bike. when I shopped around and asked for comparable models in other brands, this is what the stores told me. One store said you can't get anything close to this on their bikes (disk brake type/model, internal cabling etc). They said get that bike (Shogun), with us you are looking round $1400.00.
Unlike how franco cozzo took it, I clearly stated it's RRP is $850.00 not 1400.00.

It is always worth shopping around for similar models at other stores. Bike exchange often lists the exact same model at different places for variable prices, and most will price match. E.g. the Avanti Giro AR C1 was listed at $3700 at some places, but also $2900, $2700 and $2600.

    https://www.bikeexchange.com.au/s?query=giro%20ar%20c1

Edit: None list for list price anymore, but there are still 6 different prices for this bike at present!

In the topic of shopping around for prices, The $579.00 price is irrelevant if they don't have the size you need. I think those prices online similarly to the $799.00 advertised online at Ted's are outdated and no longer available, maybe they only had limited sizes and numbers.

The other reason I am quite happy to have paid the extra $100 or so is as mentioned, I live in the area (travel through) and it is convenient to drop off for service etc. forgot to add the bike comes with free lifetime service (I am guessing many other stores do this also). But I wasn't really going to drive to Prahran to get the bike serviced (this convenience for me is worth much more than $100.00 in the longer term).
