8GB (2x4gb) DDR3 1600 Crucial Ballistix Ram - $58 Shipped @ Kogan

110

As per title was looking for extra DDR3 for my old rig and this was the cheapest I could find - note that you should make sure it is compatible with your motherboard before buying. I.e. New Kabylake builds I don't believe have DDR3 compatible motherboards so this will not suit the new builds

Thanks

    Yep KabyLake is DDR4 only.

  • 4gb dimms just seem so… small. I have a hard time trying to figure out where to shove the extra 8gb ones.

  • Dumb question, I currently have 4x2gb 1600 in my rig, if I were to get this and replace 2 of those, does it matter what order I have them in? And does it matter efficiency-wise that I have different brands and different sizes?

Should be in the same channel, look at your motherboard manual if you don't have it they should be in the A and C or B and D slot, convention being if you see four ram slots, letter it A to D from one side to the other, the new ram should be put in a pair in either the first and third slots or second and fourth slot - also no such thing as a dumb question :)

      • Thanks, I remember the RAM had to be ordered in a specific way, just couldn't remember how. Cheers!

On many boards, they slots are colour coded. So a certain pair goes in one colour, then the other pair goes into the other colour. Just watch out for the voltages or whatever in your BIOS. If there's not enough juice going to the RAM, your PC will keep shutting down. Drove me nuts for weeks.

      • Thanks for the tip!
