  • Here's a good review from Amazon. May be helpful if you're thinking about buying one.
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/DeLonghi-Nescaf%C3%A9-Manual-Machin…

A Nescafé coffee from a pod coffee machine is never going to give you anywhere near the same quality or taste as a proper barista-prepared coffee, but you already knew that. There is however a large range of specialty coffees available in the Nescafé Dolce Gusto range, and for the price, the Delonghi machine makes a surprisingly good coffee if you can find the right blend.

What is great about the Delonghi Dolce Gusto machine is that it makes it very easy to make a good coffee, doesn't take a lot of preparation and needs very little cleaning. The setting-up instructions included aren't the greatest, relying on images with no explanatory text, but the pictures are easy to follow and once you've 'prepped' the machine before first use, operation couldn't be much easier. Fill the tank with water, switch it on, wait 30 seconds for the green light, insert the pod and then let the water pressure push through coffee through. You have to manually control the flow of water rather than it being automatic - recommendations for measurements are given for each type of coffee - but this gives you the choice and flexibility to measure a strength that suits your taste.

You can only use Nescafé pods in the Delonghi Dolce Gusto Jovia, but there are around 28 varieties to choose from and, containing real ground arabica coffee, some of them are very good indeed. For a strong, well-flavoured espresso, I would recommend the Espresso Barista. For a slightly longer drink, rather than the Americano or the Lungo, try the rather more full flavour roast of the Grande Intenso. Personally, I find the drinks that require milk pods to be rather artificial tasting, but the Skinny Latte is still far better than you would get out of a commercial vending machine. Buy the multipacks from Amazon (linked above) - with 48 coffees for around £10 is great value. (Only 24 for milk-based coffees, as you are supplied with a pod for the coffee and one for the milk).

Coffee connoisseurs aren't going to throw away their grinders, percolators and their Aeropress coffee makers, but there's no reason why this convenient coffee maker can't share kitchen space with those other options. Just clear away those jars of instant coffee and you'll have all the room you need for this compact little machine.

Have this machine - would recommend coughing up a bit more cash for an automatic model - It's difficult to get just the right amount of water for the drink as they're all varying sizes. This can result in watery drinks.

Making do with this one whilst I wait for another one of the offers where you get a free machine when you buy 10 boxes of coffee off the website.

    • +1 get an automatic machine. You can get a mini me for about the same price on special and it's automatic.

I also started with a manual machine but was quite a pain and upgraded to an automatic machine with one of those free coffee machine deals which are great, even if you don't need the machine can give to a friend or family member or as a gift etc.
