I was browsing B&H and saw this on sale. Out of curiosity I did a staticice lookup and the cheapest local price was $2339.90

The reviews on B&H suggest this is more of a backup NAS and less suitable for large high speed file transfers.

On sale for another 16hours.

  • Some time ago I looked for a raid solution for both video content backup and remember reading fairly average reviews, saying if the unit plays up you can lose all your data (in raid 5) and that it was incredibly, incredibly slow including setup and rebuild. Maybe these have since improved as it was several years ago.

Not having a go at the OP, who has posted a real bargain for this device, after many years of great service from Synology NAS', I think this would be a better and far cheaper option: Synology DS1815+ 8 Bay NAS $1099 [Intel Quad Core, 4 Gig ports, link: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Network-Storage-(NAS)/5-8-Bays/56873-DS1815plus]

      No worries,
Thanks for putting up the suggestion.

I don't have much interest in this item personally. But you never know who might need one for whatever reason, hence the post

synology for the win. Honestly they make great products.

    • Or… any old PC with FreeNAS, w/BYO disks.

You can never have enough backup when it comes to porn.

  • For that price, i will get a QNAP TVS671. Even it has only 6 bays, but it has 4th gen i3 with 4GB DDR3.

Nice OS and lots of apps like virtualisation station, container station, surveillance station….

  • Didn't know drobo was still around! Their original claim to fame was being able to create a NAS with mismatched drives, these days that's pretty much a non issue. But $1k+ ?

Also BH will declare the correct sale price of the item on the package - I think you would be very lucky to get it without being slugged for GST & fees.

from someone who used a drobo in a corp environment it's not worth the purchase price. Go the QNap or Synology for real NAS Reliability.

  • $1599 for Marvell Quad-Core CPU and 2GB of RAM, not to mention a Drobo, no deal. As per others, far better value from non deal Synology or QNAPs

That CPU architecture can lead to real issues and limitations for what packages can be installed; stick to Intel.

    • And if your head is still broken and you must have this device for some bizarre reason, it's cheaper on Amazon due to their cheaper shipping rates.

for those who have spare computer parts around, build up a basic machine and grab xpeonology. i've been using it at home for the past year or so and it's been brilliant.

and good thing is - if anything dies, just build another one and stick your drives in that. i couldn't justify the cost of a similarly spec'd synology
