    AU $50 Off Ring Doorbell

I don't normally charge people to ring my doorbell. Am I doing it wrong?

    Price?

    • Title updated

Looks like default price is $299. So $249 for a doorbell camera is… well… ummm…

  • I liked the idea in the beginning, but its being advertised like crazy and people know what it looks like now (including thieves) so you know people won't be home.
Defeats the purpose now, doesn't it?

I've been a fan of these for a while and never seen an ad for them other than on tech podcasts. I doubt most people would be aware of them, and regardless at least you get a photo of the thug.

      • I've only seen it advertised in a JBHIFI cattle dog.

        • I've only seen it advertised in a JBHIFI cattle dog.

Didn't know JB HiFi sold pets.

      • Facebook (probably targetted advertising) and Facebook Neighbourhood Watch groups, Foxtel and FTA infommercials.
Even my parents have seen them advertised.

    • The term 'stick up cam' prob confuses things. These are real cameras and I'm sure you don't just put them up when your going out. If they are up permanently then people may or may not be at home. Same concept as all security cameras id assume.

If you only put it up when you go out then yes I guess its is up to the thieve whether they take a risk, however they will still be on cam and risk someone seeing them in real time.

      • They are permanent wireless cameras, just stick up and replace the batteries when required.

It acts as a deterrent. The camera also senses motion so no need to press the bell to start recording.

Also from a non-security perspective, it's useful for times when parcels are being delivered and no one is home (which I presume is the case for most Ozbargainers - parcels every week and at work to finance our bargain hunting!).

Having to pay subscription fees really kills this product.
It would be better if it could have local storage or free storage.

I own both the original Ring and Ring Pro and each came with a 30 day trial of cloud recording. I find the cost of $30 USD per year per device a no brainer for the peace of mind it gives me when i'm away from home. I also run a 3MP swann camera system at home, so yeah i'm a little paranoid about home security when i'm not home.

      • +2

The problem is not the $30 … the problem is that you are never sure if the company survives a longer time rendering your purchase useless. All devices which require some server running which is not in your control have that issue.

        • Yeah fair enough. My fire alarm will have the same issue if this happens :( At least the fire alarm will still be useful if the company goes bust.

        • @Roemac: The Ring bell looks like a decent product (Looking at Amazon they have some negative reviews when people just use the free subscription).

I bought a Netatmo Thermostat which requires their (free) servers to offer the full functionality. My LIFX bulbs also need the company to stay alive to be able to use as intended. Same with my Amazon Echo Dot. I also had a "Chumby" which is now useless.

Some products just require some service in the background but it is good to have a choice and be able to switch providers when something goes wrong without replacing the hardware. You just need to be aware of it.

    Just bought one, thanks OP!

  • If you want local, apply code on your phone and show staff/manager for pricematch

    • Tried this at Knox JB HIFI. Wouldn't price match. Lowest they said was $276.

      • bugger - that's what they offered me too; but ended up getting the manager out on the flor and begrudgingly agreed to a price match $253.95

    • Support will be very limited

  • anyone know a coupon to get the chime cheaper?

  • Thanks OP! I just bought a doorbell and chime from JB HiFi. I managed to get the doorbell for $250 after a bit of back & forth. The sales guy said there was almost no mark up on the chime so he couldn't offer any better price for it.
