    (Was $1.99)

    It's been $2.99 since November

Its not perfect and doesnt block everything. But I dare say it does about 90% with very little small impact to battery. Recommend this even if it was $3..

  • thanks, all the adds on oz bargain are driving me crazy :)

I installed this app and it blocked all of TA's posts.

        Must say, well played JV.

But thanks TA, got the app :)

      • +2

Next level of technology will be a troll filter/blocker to stop jv's posts. LOL

      • +2

Hope it hides all jv comments.

        • +1

          It's an adblocker

        • +1

          @jv: oh really

          @jv:
waiting for someone to make a free app called jvblocker

      @millusions

One of the benefits of having an OzB account is that you can disable ads if you so desire. You'll find the option in settings/banner ads.

Was just kidding mate, been waiting for an app like this fir iPad , thanks again

Ah, the bane of my life as an app developer!

    • Agreed… Nobody loves ads but hosting etc isn't cheap

      • +8

If ads weren't made so intrusive and annoying there would not be a market for products like ad blocker.
The worst are the ones that fill the screen hiding the content. I refuse to have anything to do with the product they advertise.

        • Yeah I agree with this. Services like Google Adsense let you specify what kind of advertising you want… You can even specify text only ads etc if you want to be really nonintrusive.

I find that if your app is of high enough quality, even if your impressions or clicks get less dollars, the flow of users is greater so it evens out.

I hate those full screen ads

@misterpotatomato: I use Adsense/Admob exclusively, but as you can see by my downvoted previous comment, people don't care. All people want is something for nothing. As this is Ozbargain I expect no less.

        • @misterpotatomato: To add insult to injury, I have adds appearing months after it was relevant, and funnily for some, weeks after I have bought the product. Endlessly repetitive and starting to push my boundaries of ad tolerance. Surely the website hoster should foot some responsibility in managing ad-plugin quality, else they can't blame us for shutting the lot.

    • Just use the fremium model. Make them pay every time they launch it.

      • Thats not what freemium is, but…

I have versions of the same apps where people can pay in advance, they don't want to - something I learned on Day 1 of App dev.

Essentially, my free apps are freemium, they can optionally pay and the ads go away. Some do, most are cheap. Won't remove the ads, because my competition has no ads and an optional pay system, they make about $5 a month. On $5 a month there is no app updates.

        • Ah, they're not games.

If they're games you can fleece them.

Can't give much input without knowing what exactly your apps do unfortunately.

There are ways to monetize free to download software without ads. Annoying time limits and energy based systems (once a day, twice a day, etc).

I personally think freemium/microtransactions are the bane of mobile and casual games and won't touch any with a 10" pole. But people seem to prefer to either pay way more in the long run than an up front paid app, or are just willing to deal with the annoyances.

I'd rather pay up front, but I'm in the minority.

  • Doesn't work for the 7live tv app, seems to work for the other apps I've tested.

    • Most likely because the app doesn't know about the advertiser used by the 7live tv app.

I was skeptical when someone mentioned blocking ads in other apps. It turns out, what this app did was to create an IPSec VPN that points to 255.255.255.255 (aka black hole) and connect to this VPN when apps request ads that are in the whitelist. This form of VPN is available since iOS 8, and doesn't require a 64-bit processor.

Edit: Look here for a better explanation: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/3842367/redir :-)

  • My google map was disabled after enabling Adblock. Even I disabled Adblock, google map was still showing no service. Deleted it, no working. I had to restart iPhone to bring google map back.

    • You mean the app in general or a particular function? I just installed Google Maps for the first time after installing adblock and it seems to be working. I haven't tried sharing my location with the app yet though

  • Anyone know if installing this app might interfere with the appearance of the $20 off Uber offer in Google Maps discussed here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/288541 ?

  • I thought ADBLOCK and ublock origin was FREE on FIREFOX and CHROME

    • +1

They are but the iOS versions of those browsers either don't have those add-ons or don't have add-ons at all. I think the latter

  • Got this awhile ago. Works very well.

Cleans up ozbargain site very nicely.

    • +3

I don't find the ozbargain ads obtrusive. Nicely down the side of the page, as it should be, not splashing across the page in your face as some obnoxious sites are want to do.. Don't mind unobtrusive ads as a body's got to eat and believe it or not ads can be useful.
In fact at this very moment on the side of this page are some very attractive models wearing cocktail dresses from some company called revolve. Might go and have a bit more of a look.

You are aware that you can turn off adverts in Settings when logged into OzB, right?

      • No I didn't. Thanks for the tip!

      • Settings shows you can turn off "banner ads".

Unless there's a way to turn them all off I'll stick with this app.

  • Thanks a lot for posting.

  • I didnt know this kind of thing existed! thanks!

  • Thanks OP.

Just reread all comments from all 3 pages about this app and reports are

Slow, drains battery and makes certain apps and websites unusable
The rating in the App Store is heaps of 1 and 5 ratings
So it seems close to 50% of users hate this app

Adblock is doing more damage to the internet than good. Won't be any free content left in a few years if it continues.

    • +1

I'm fine with that. I'd rather pay than deal with ads designed to get you to accidentally click on them and annoy the hell out of you.

The internet will survive. If a site or app is discontinued due to ad blocking, another will take its market share. There will be something for everyone. Most likely they will be replaced by someone who has a better funding model and gets the balance right.

You can already get rid of a lot of mobile ads by turning off your data connection.

    • +1

Unintelligent drivel on the Internet does more damage than good. Won't be any time at all before we are buried in it.

  • got it to block youtube ads but doesnt work :(

  • Thanks yet again TA.
