Hi guys,

In the spirit of CNY, we've got this cool revolutionary bowl.
For you asian kids out there, we've always used just a normal bowl that never ever fits the whole rice paper.
This bowl utilises a simple design to get the whole paper moist without making a mess!
It also saves a lot of table space.

Perfect CNY addition to the family!

Wow, that's expensive, when I bought it in vietnam it was like 3 bucks, and don't tell me it's australian made, it's different from the others because they all serve the same purpose

    • It is not Australian mode, it is directly imported from New Star.
Unfortunately this brand holds their own patents and it's really a reflection of their price rather than ours.

  • I helped a guy at a restaurant make a bucket load of fresh spring rolls and he laid out damp teas towels, did a quick dip in the bowl and dealt them out like they were cards. We put the fillings on and by that time they were ready to wrap. So easy.

    • damp tea-towels, you say?
      I shall try this idea….

    • Even without damp tea towels , if you dip the rice paper into water and let it sit for a minute or so.. they eventually become very soft and easy to wrap.

If you want it to go soft quicker, use hot water.

      • Yes it's very quick. The damp tea towels are mostly to prevent sticking. I think he'd take like ten, dump them in the water and deal them out like cards. Eezy peezy lemon squeezey.

        • Did you get little fabric fibres sticking to it?

        • @eediot:
Think about it. When you use a teatowel, do your glasses and plates end up with little fabric fibres all over them?

        • @eediot:
Not that I noticed. Normally you would let the sheets soak, and put them on a tea towel to soak up excess water. And roll. No fibres there.

If you are concerned, use a tea towel with a fine grain.

I have over fifty tea towels and on some days use more than twenty. I don't reuse due to hygiene/food safety concerns. They don't take up much room in the wash.

@llama: Think about it. Are your glasses and plates tacky and have a tendency to stick to your fingers like rice paper does?

        • @voteoften: thanks for that, might try this when making it in bulk.

What a rip-off. You can get this a some Asian grocery stores for less than $10.

I love how your avatar points to the post you're referring to when you say that. :)

      • The deal is trumped up

  • I was going to comment on how expensive this piece of plastic is, but after looking at how much its sold on ebay. This is a bargain … and now i'm considering.

My sister got this at the local asian grocery for about $5

Oh, I thought it was a bowl made of rice paper. Would have bought two.

For $1.05 more I found this, not a bargain compared to this but at the right time the exchange rate goes down this could potentially be cheaper

  • $32 for a piece of plastic to dip rice paper in??

    • Yes, it stand up and save space mate, wondering how big is the dinning table.

My mother in law bought 2 for $10 at the local Chinese shop. No deal.

I've made my own using an plastic folder holder (those ones to holder a number of manila folders) with rubber feet to hold the water, with the plastic folder sheets (not the envelope ones for filing) in the front to hold the dry ones…

    Because I'm a cheap-ass Asian :)

As a Viet, I feel insulted by this post. Common! who wants to spend that much $ on buying this ridiculously overpriced one.

  • +2

got this from local asian store for abt 4 bux and hardly use it as it is more tedious to get it into that narrow slot than the wide opening of a bowl or even a plate (which are readily available and free btw). Can't believe people actually buying them for such an insane price, feel like its a con!

  • The Asians are coming out in masses now.

    • because CNY is coming….

Outrageous pricing, as an Asian this is ridiculously priced, $30 bucks for a piece of plastic? Why don't you give me that 30 bucks and I'll get 3 for the same price at an Asian Grocery, talk about inflated prices!

    1.8 USD

who wants to split the other 4999 pieces with me

    • Lol… That will be fun to distribute.

    • I don't think the whole of Vietnam wouldn't mind chipping in!

Just check out Bankstown or Cabramatta got one for $7

  • +2

    No deal.

  • Lunar New Year is coming. What an insult to sell such an "iconic item" at a neck cutting price!

    • Throatoally

  • i hold the paper up to a water spray bottle and do both sides before setting down on a plate to soak up the moisture.

    • Sounds good, but a bit slow. I find it's more efficient to get several papers ready and place my fillings. For someone with poor motor skills like me, this helps keeps the end product more uniform.

  • Go to Springvale mate get 2 dollah bread

    Seriously this price is bs

  • Got these at Cabramatta for around $5.

  • is this also a mobile hotspot hence the price ?
