been looking for a 4 bay NAS and found this price on the warehouse1 website. Seems pretty decent. Next lowest I have found is shopping square for 529 + shipping. Microserver seems to be a cheaper option, however I think they are more fiddly to work with?

  The Synology & QNAP boxes are just rock solid (It helps being linix based).
  Theres a fair few apps (nothing compared to Windows or straight linux servers of course).

      yep, it tis. But you can SSH to it & run bash scripts, etc
      (I've got it running a media re-indexer script at 5pm so anything that has magically appeared during the day can be visible & tee'd up watch via my dumb DLNA TV, or the android/ios DS Video app can send stuff to Chromecast or download to watch on the train.

      Sonarr works to treat too for those wth usenet.
      The VPN server is handy to remote into your home network (especially if you don't want to open up your network for general file sharing, etc to the outside world).

  I am looking for a rack mountable unit that has at least 8 drives for under 1k (used)… hard to come by!

      unfortunately a cheap one usually costs you more in the long term with unforseen expensives, such as jewelry, then next you know half your house, car, etc has gone too.
