The new Sigma 30mm 1.4 might be a better option than the Sony 24 1.8 from a cost pov

      • True, however you are looking at a significant difference between focal lengths as well.
But it's great to have that sigma choice available!

    • How do you find your 35 mm. I have sony 50 mm and it is amazing, but sometimes I wish it could be 35mm due to area it covers.

      • +1

I love my sel35f18. Did an entire friends wedding with it. Made them an album and gave it as a gift - and they were so impressed and happy.

        • Thanks for the feedback. I love my 50mm as well which is great for pograits, but restricted area makes you move a bit further.
I feel 35mm will be great for Portraits as well. But not sure why it is so expensive compared to 50mm :(

        • @Gaggy: Yeah, I couldn't understand either! In Canon/Nikon - it is roughly the same price for the 35mm f1.8.

Also do consider the 30mm f1.4 from sigma. (as it's cheaper)

I have been very happy with the 35mm f1.8 - I paid $300 for mine in almost new condition on gumtree!

        • @khonfahm: I am looking for it on Gumtree, but could not find a good price. selling my 18mm-200mm which was my favourite for all occasions lens, but is a bit heavy.

        • @khonfahm: Also Sigma one does not have OSS and is only a little cheaper (though F1.4) . I am sure OSS is more prominent for videos. If I can get it for 300, I will go for it as well.

        • +1

          @Gaggy:

I had a 18-105F4G - that I sold due to size. I can imagine the 18-200 would be quite similar.

Good luck hunting for the 30mm f1.4 or the 35mm f1.8.

For what it's worth - I used to have a 30mm f2.8 Sigma before the 35mm F1.8 Sony … The sigma did not have OSS and I could comfortably do hand held stills at 1/15s.

    • I just use my 16mm F2.8 and my 35mm F1.8. It pretty much covers me for all that I photograph.

What you said above is awesome, but $$$$$$$$. Quite jealous of your collection there.

  • Does the lens combo qualify for the $150 eftpos? And if does is it worth it? http://www.harveynorman.com.au/sony-a6000-mirrorless-camera-…

On the eftpos FAQ it doesn't mention anything.
EDIT: according to Harvey Norman support the body still qualifies… so I guess the question is: is the 16-50mm lens kit worth $150?

    • +1

      For that price, yes.

  • This or the Sony Alpha 7? I have no idea what the differences between them. Thanks.

    • +6

Short answer: If you don't know the difference then you don't need an Alpha 7 camera.

Long answer: The A7 series have a larger, full frame sensor. This means they capture more light information. This results in: better low light performance, the ability to shoot with increased bokeh, and have more dynamic range. Ultimately this leads to shots that have in some circumstances better image quality. Generally professionals are the only ones who actually need this. Since the body is bigger they also have more controls and a slightly bigger EVF. The downside is that this makes the camera and the lenses much more expensive. The cameras are also a bit bigger and heavier. The other downside is their autofocus speed and shooting speed (expect for maybe the A7R2) can't match the A6000 with its smaller sensor. The A6500 is currently the speed king.

      • Thanks so much for the heads up. So the A6000 has the shooting speed faster than the A7, doesn't it? I'll take a look at the A6500 and waiting for the sale on it.

        • Yep. A7 has burst speed of 5fps. A6000 has burst of 11fps. The A6500 is actually the same with 11fps. But the A6500 auto focusing speed is much quicker with 425 phase detect auto focus points vs a6000 of 179.

        • +2

You'll be waiting a long time. Even the a6300 body is rarely seen for less than $1k.

    • +1

The a7 also has slower AF speed compared to the a6000. IMO, it's not worthwhile getting the a7 unless you are going to pair it with super expensive lenses that really bring out the FF advantage (e.g. the sony 55mm f/1.8, anything zeiss batis).

The Sony E 16-50 "Pancake" Lens is fantastic for the price, light, reasonable quality. I love it far more than many of the Minolta and Nikon Lenses and is my pick for everyday use on an e-mount camera.
The whole point of mirrorless is you didn't want all the bulk and "carry on" of a DSLR.
But I am also one of those people that shoots at 6MP a lot of the time. Stop caring about mathematical limits and individual pixels.
This lens with body will fit in most large pockets…. WOW

The camera of choice now though is a Sony RX100 (any model)… Pocket and decent shots.

I have a bunch of glass for our families' 5 alpha(e mount) and nex cameras … but it's the one I used 90% of the time, and we have 1 for each camera.

16/2.8 (This is my second favourite lens make sure to track down the VCLECU1 or VCLECU2) turns it into a 12mm when needed and the fish eye mount is fun too.
    20/2.8 (16 is better)
    35mm/1.8 (50mm equiv … walkaround not pocketable)
    55-210/4.5-6.3 (awful … why!)
50/1.8 (85mm equiv portrait … why do portraits on a crop?)
18-105/4 (I thought this was going to be my new all the time lens… doesn't fit in a large pocket…)
90 macro ( a good lens for chasing bugs … my hobby)
50 macro (Good until the 90 came out)
    18-200 … travel … maybe if you like backpacks/bags.

Annoyingly they changed flash mounts in the middle but that's a different rant.

    • Yea, flash destroys pics annoyingly with 18-200 or 55-210 lens. Might do on others as well, but I haven't used them.
Good to either point flash at ceiling or use external flash.

    • Interesting I found the 16mm pancake unusable conveniently small but just way too soft. Images coming out of that were worse than my kit lens. But from the sounds of things you're not really doing crops or post processing and just shooting JPEG?

      • 16mm does have soft images. I sold mine after few months. Even 16-50mm has sweet spot in between.
18-200mm is a very good all round lens which covers long range and you can get it cheap used ones from Gumtree or ebay.

I want to have now 35mm for Potraits.

  • Cant seem to get the eftpos card redemption to work, Anyone else?
Claims incomplete or incorrect info but I cant see anything wrong?!

  • Anyone have any recommendation on SD card for this camera?

    • A super fast one I think, if it's not going to slow down your burst shooting

    • +2

A class 10 is fine. The camera has a bottleneck in its ability to write that means a U2 or U3 wont see an increase in write performance. Just make sure the card is at least 64gb if you want to record video in XAVC format.

      EDIT: See this - http://alikgriffin.com/jan/13/best-sd-memory-card-sony-a6000

    • +1

My last comment was un-published for linking to the card at Amazon, but the card I bought over a year ago & still have had no issues with was the Samsung 64GB PRO SDXC Memory Card - Class 10. Git it for around $65(AU). It's probably less now. The card was one of the best two performers for what the camera is capable of both in terms of video and photos (read & write speeds).

Thanks, got one for $50 on ebay.

  • Got the a6000 + 16-50mm lens kit for $823 from HN today. I just told him this was the price yesterday. So it's worth a shot if you're keen on this deal and missed out.

Just got the camera, charging. 1st impression on holding it is : This feels cheaper and plasticky compared to my NEX5-R. How is it possible Sony went backawards on the build quality ?

    • Have they moved manufacturing since they first came out?
Looked at one in store a while back and quality was what stood out,
compared to some of the prosumer level DSLR's

      • Its fine if you compare it with its peers, but my NEX5R was smaller, more metal, more rounded and not as "sharp" to hold. Weight is about the same. Not sure about location of manufacture, will check tonight. I do love the viewfinder on the A6000, could not do good shots in bright sunlight with the 5R due to only being able to use the LCD screen

      • Both the NEX5R and A6000 are made in Thailand !

    • The NEX-5 was from a different time. Back then Sony had less e-mount models and there was no FF bodies. So the low end models could have a better build. But when the a6000 was released it intentionally had cheaper build quality and a lower resolution EVF to be able sell it at a lower price point to fit inbetween the NEX-6/7, yet still also have a majority of full features. Usually when it comes to budget models on electronics, build quality is one of the first things that have to go.
