Olympus OM-1 Body Only $2099 Delivered (+ Bonus $500 Prepaid Gift Card via Redemption) @ Ted's Cameras

300

OM System is currently running a promotion where a few lenses and cameras in their range have a bonus visa card, which effectively makes this camera $1599 after redemption. This is probably the ATL for this camera and is in my opinion very good value for those looking to upgrade or migrate to m43.

I price matched the Ted's price at Digidirect Parramatta without any issues.

Good price on the body but it makes the camera kits laughable. They're probably over a thousand dollars more expensive than getting the discounted body and buying the lens separately, and that's not even considering the Visa card.

There are people already in the 4/3 system, just want to upgrade the body.

      • Yeah of course, but if anybody went to the site thinking that the kits would be similarly discounted (e.g. had a few lenses but thought they might pick up the 12-100mm as well) I was just highlighting that it's ONLY the body-only option that is discounted.

good price on the body, although i prefer the em5 form factor for m4/3.

Agreed, bought an em5 mk1 to go travelling for a year and it was the perfect size.. 'upgraded' to the em1.2 and then found the weight/size offputting and have used the camera way less for trips since because of the added bulk

      • Agree. The OM1 has been a hit because of the big leap in sensor quality and new menus, both of which the OM5 sadly has not inherited.

I have an Em5 ii and while it's great in many ways, the C- AF is so bad compared to my Sony A7C I will upgrade it as soon as they get a usb-c option for the OM5

    • I've got a E-M5ii and an OM-1, while I love the form factor of the E-M5ii and still use it as an EDC/travel camera, the OM-1 is still fairly compact for what it is and the quality and features are awesome.

How is the m4/3 system progressing under OM Systems? Are they innovating and investing into R&D or is this going the way of when Sony sold Vaio to JIP?

    • I feel like development has slowed right down. Most people are content to use their camera phones which are getting better and better (ai plays a big part in making the photos look better). Most people are just looking at photos on their phone/tablet.

If you’re going to get into the system I’d consider Fuji as they seem to be investing more than Panasonic/OM.

      FYI I’m using m43

      • APSC vs M43 though, M43’s still have the edge re portability and stabilisation

        • there's no small M43 atm that you could buy brand new today lol.

    • Hard to say. OM-1 was a major leap, but OM-5 was panned because it's barely better than the Em5-III. The OM-1 II was described by the Phoblographer rather unkindly as the world's most expensive firmware upgrade. OM has a new model coming soon but the rumours reckon it's likely just the OM5 with a USB-C port to be EU compliant.

Hopefully the OM-1 wasn't just an Olympus death rattle.

    • It's been slow going but they seem to be doing something at least. The OM-1 was good and the OM-5 was alright but was ultimately a E-M5iii in an OM body. The OM-1ii brought in some cool AI stuff but wasn't overly well received because people were pissed most of the features weren't coming to the OM-1 (due to hardware specs), and a lot of people didn't think it was worthwhile upgrading from their OM-1s. They just announced an Astro version of the OM-1, and there were rumours of a PEN update but that's possibly just wishful thinking, and unfortunately it's triggering a bit of outrage.

Panasonic are still pretty invested in m43, and there's a bit of 3rd party glass around, and some cool m43 projects like https://www.43rumors.com/lol-this-micro-four-thirds-camera-j…

      • I read in a few places the OM-5 had the workings of an M1 iii; the functions of the bigger model, in the smaller form factor

Also that the OM1 ii (new larger model) has some nice improvements:
        - auto focus on people even if they are facing away from you
        - more memory (allowing increased buffer and handling)
        - inbuilt simulated graduated neutral density filter; you can even move the "horizon" around
        - increased in body image stablisation
        - improved autofocus
        - rubberized controls allow manipulation in the cold with gloves
        - more

    • IMHO slow. I think they probably bought a development pipeline anyway so I'm not sure anything substantial has been done entirely on the watch anyway.

Some commentary they have tweaked production on some kit - a colleague who bought one of the first 150-400 Pros and sold it a little while after has just bought a new one again, and noted some changes in production along the way.

How is the m4/3 system progressing under OM Systems?

I felt like they pretty much already nearly maxed the m43 standard out… unless they going to do a line of ai augmentations for post processing in cam - like fake bokeh etc.

love my g9, great for video compared to my a7iii - but a7iii just so much better for anything other than when you are in a bright place.

good deal, but i love canon. i have a lot of L series lens already, so it would be hard for me to switch.

then i would consider nikon, then sony maybe. i never considered olympus.

    • If you've never considered Olympus, how would you know if it's a good deal?

        the price

        • as a non M43 shooter i gotta say 2k for such a small sensor is kinda a rip off unless you've already invested heaps into the M43 platform and need a new capable body.

          • +1

@dukeGR4: I think the net price (2.1k - 500 for the visa card) so 1.6k, there's a strong argument for it if you enjoy the m43 platform. It has it's niche in being a small and extremely capable camera, that needs smaller lenses to achieve bigger zooms. Also extremely robust.

Personally I hike with a camera so it's perfect, and I think if your in a similar situation it's worth the price and I wouldn't mark it as a "rip-off"

            • @Grey Goose: yea they're pretty compact so for hiking yea 100% agree with you. I was looking for an older M43 body (Lumix GM1) as a street camera, but just couldn't get over the small sensor. went with the Ricoh GRiiix in the end, which actually has crazy good optics - goated rendering, goated sharpness… goated film sim (rate it above Fujifilm film sim which i also own)

    • I use my Olympus kit in conjunction with my Canon and Sony full frame kit. It is far more weather sealed and a bit lighter, so it is great for hiking and heavier outdoor use.

      • Same here. Horses for courses. With the 100-400m (200-800mm FF equiv) lens for sports and birds watching, it is half the size and weight the FF set up. Not to mention the excellent IBIS and the fast 120FPS (or 50FPS with AF). For travelling/street photography, put on the 12-45 F4 or 12-40 f2.8, you don't stick out so much in public.

        • +1

I also went with Olympus specifically for the improved weather resistance.
For me, it's really nice being able to relax and not worry about what happens if my camera gets some water on it.

          Examples:
          - going to photographic events despite the chance of rain (other people pulling out and missing a great day of photography)
          - getting to keep shooting even though it's raining (including at a special muscle car event)
          - going out in the ocean to photograph with models despite the waves (then using clean water to rinse off the camera afterwards)

Then I've had people coming up to me at some events, usually after an hour in, saying they wish they were carrying my rig instead of their Canon (because of the weight difference)

      • -2

i never shoot in the rain or hike, so probably why i never looked into olympus. i know they were great back in the film days, but when it went digital, they seem to have fallen behind.

    Brought, thanks op!
