These work well when they actually work, however we had 5 warranty call outs on ours in the space of 2 years due to the fins snapping repeatedly; they were made of cheap, very brittle plastic. If you don't have larger leaves or palm berries getting into your pool you should be OK.

In the end I gave up and bought a more simple Hayward machine that works just as well, but was much cheaper.

  No - its not for waste, but it will suck debris smaller than leaves into your filter. You could run it to waste if you were cleaning out some sand or lots of leaves but this has the leaf cyclonic attachment. Leave it attached and running when not swimming for cleaning during normal run cycles as far as I know.

Had a cheap suction cleaner Davey brand maybe that kept getting stuck in a corner of a square part of our pool. Is this likely to be able to handle that?

  I've got a rectangular pool and this hasn't got stuck once in a corner. It twists and turns and goes up the walls well. It doesn't go onto our steps though.
