  • Is the battery interchangeable with other XU1 products?

    • I think they can but I have never heard about this brand.

It's the Bunnings store brand for people who don't want to splurge on Ozito.

        • +2

Yep - they have 4 tiers of house brands for power drills
          AEG
          Ryobi
          Ozito
          XUI

        • @llama:

That is why only 1 year replacement warranty.

        • +1

          @superforever:

OMG, why did you have to write that?

Now we'll get the obligatory Ozbargain idiot post about the mythical "2 year statutory warranty". LOL

        • @llama:

Where does Makita sit? I got one a two set for my birthday. First time with drills haha.

  • Wish they had corded hammer drill ones on sale. I have a clothes dryer that I wanna wall-mount, and none of these battery-operated ones can drill concrete walls.

none of these battery-operated ones can drill concrete walls

      Of course they can.

My father, and my fathers father, and even me until recently all drilled holes in concrete without using a hammer drill.

You just gotta put pressure on the bit but don't let it get too holt. That means slow speed, or use water (which turns the dust into slurry, which is a bonus).

A dryer will only need a couple of 6mm expansion anchors. Wall will almost certainly not be concrete anyway, unless your laundry is build onto the side of a retaining wall.

      • Yup, my laundry is built onto the side of a retaining wall, and I heard a lot of breaking bits, or even worse, melting drills into hands too many times. Not worth it. I would rather get a decent, powerful, corded drill on sale, or pay a tradie to drill the holes in the wall (none of my friends has such a tool unfortunately).

You don't own a drill, and your friends don't own drills. So you've never needed a drill before, and the chances are you will never need one again.

On that basis you don't need a "decent, powerful, corded drill". You just need pretty much ANY drill for your grand total of 4 small holes.

          Like this $29 beast

BTW - drill bits do not snap in concrete, not will the drill melt.

$29???! I bought it for $39 when it was on sale! This stuff keeps getting cheaper. I agree, get this one!

@llama: I have actually got a battery operated drill, a so-called 909 cheapo I bought from Masters deal that was posted here couple of months ago. But it's shit, and can hardly drill anything onto wood, let alone concrete, so no, 'any drill' won't do it. And that is not just my opinion, but that of someone who knows the trade a lot better than I do, and have seen both my drill and wall, as well as the job that needs to be done.

          @AussieDaddy:

so no, 'any drill' won't do it.

ANY CORDED HAMMER DRILL WILL DO to drill 4 tiny holes into some (probably <20mPa) concrete.

          Geeze, man!

        • @llama: Stop fighting me, llama man. Jeez!

        • @AussieDaddy: I have a Bosch 18V cordless hammer drill. I have used it for 2 years, and it works fine on all manner of concrete and brick applications.

Do yourself a favour, bin the 909 and get one of these : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/279799

        • @Tiggrrrrr: The thing is, I will hardly use it after this one job (I am renting, not an owner, and had to get a permission for this one job) so I am not sure if it's worth paying for a bosch drill that will probably never be used again. I am at Bunnings right now, and will ask the staff if they can help. Ta

        • @AussieDaddy: hit up a neighbour,
try the guy with tats and a beard,
or better yet the chick in yoga pants,
may as well put all those drill metaphors to good use

        • @Beach Bum: Will see if my yoga pants-wearing female neighbor has one. Thanks for the tip. ;)

I bought this one last week to do shelving in my garage (drilling into brick)
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/xu1-500w-13mm-corded-hammer-dril…

I have an 18v Cordless Drill with a Hammer Function but I was only getting 7 or 8 holes done per charge so I thought a corded would be better.

The bits are important as I had a few masonry bits from other drill kits and they were absolute crap.
I just bought a Suttons 8mm Masonry Bit and it was like I was using a new drill.

That $29 Kit that llama mentioned looks good wish I noticed it last week.

      • Ta. Will have a look at that in the weekend.

That link doesn't work for me. I searched and could not find any XU1 corded drills, yet you bought one!

I have an XUI cheapie corded as a spare drill. Mine has a keyed chuck, but otherwise it is OK. I like having multiple drills as it means I can load them all up with different drill bits.

For example for wood I use 4 drills, one each for
        a) pilot/screw threads hole
        b) clearance hole
        c) countersink
        d) drive the screw

  • Anyone knows how long the battery last?

    • +1

About 1 day longer than the warranty period.

    • The battery on my older XU1 cordless has pretty much gone, so it's probably time to replace it with this one.

      • I meant how long does a fully charged battery last?

      • Is it worth $39?

        How much torque it have?

  • Just curious, but I got a Makita two drill set from bunnings from the gf last year for my birthday in anticipation of my new house being built.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/makita-18v-2-piece-cordless-dril…

I believe it's hammer and impact driver.

Now she then got me their black oxide based drill bit set (39 I believe) for hammer and impact…

I wanted to use the drills to drill screws into the window frames to hang my own venetians or other blinds? First time using a drill or even doing my own window treatments. I believe the builder said I needed a drill driver?

But reading the descriptions on my drills I thought they could go through steel? Because essentially I'd be drilling through steel lintels to put screws into the brackets needed to hang the blinds? I don't know if you would drill all the way through, in which case do they consider it 'masonry'? since it's double brick construction?? So what sort of drill and essentially type of drill bit would I need then? Abit confused being fresh.

    • Drilling will do it, the hammer function just makes it a lot faster
