Not for AMD
my pc use amd 6 cores, built 10 years ago, still going strong, running latest 3d cad apps without problems. now waiting for next gen amd zen cpu.
Same here, AMD Phenom X6, now waiting for Zen :)
Same, 1055t overclocked to 3.5ghz and also undervolted at 1.325v so it's nice and cool.
I'm hoping it will last for another yr or so.
Phenom II X4 965 BE…..still going strong
Me too!
Ah back in the days of AMD CPUs, this post made me feel all that much more nostalgic.
I'm dreaming of an athlon…
My PC runs this CPU on an Asrock 990FX Extreme6 motherboard. It's been going fine since i built it later last year. It would perhaps be recommended to use a good aftermarket CPU cooler instead of the stock cooler since it can run hot. I just use a Coolermaster Hyper 103 CPU cooler on it.
I got the same on a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 and a Zalman Copper orb cooler.
Word of note on this CPU - it does use "more" power than the original AM3+ Mobos @125W. Most of the first or second gen AM3's are only capable of going up to 95W. I made this mistake when I bought mine and ended up having to upgrade my mobo as well since I had a second gen 970FX and kept constantly crashing on me because it wasnt supplying enough current from the VRM's.
Yeah i was lucky, i went straight to a 990FX mobo, only the best would do. And yes it is a 125W CPU so does run hot and requires a good CPU cooler.
AMD Zen comes out Feb, keep in mind you are buying into a family of CPU about to go extinct.
+1 The Zen line of processors is reported to have equal (if not better) the clock for clock performance of Intel's current line up at a lower price point. Do yourself a favour and wait for it to come out.
I won't allow myself to get excited until we see genuine side by side uncherrypicked benchmarks..
Not falling for the AMD hype train again.. But will Buy Zen in a heartbeat if the rumors are true
Pretty sure rumours indicate about Broadwell level, if not only Haswell. Doubt it'll be equivalent to Skylake / Kaby Lake tbh. Wouldn't get your hopes up.
Has Intels performance really moved that far ahead? I looked at upgrading my i5-3570 from 2012 with a newer i5-6600k and it is barely any faster.
@sallan75: The difference between the generations is roughly between 5-10% increases. Therefore the new Skylakes are only about 20% faster than your IvyBridge and will a lot of that is because of the DDR4 and faster timings.
Moore's Law was dead since the Core-i's were introduced.
Has Intels performance really moved that far ahead?
Not significantly so, no. As bchlio says, it'll probably be about 20% max difference, and that probably wouldn't translate into 20% discernible difference for most people in most real world applications.
I just think it's worthwhile keeping realistic estimates in mind, so that AMD's release won't be met with disappointment yet again, because people got hyped off inaccurate information. AMD has some issues with putting out competitive high end products, but more importantly, an issue with public perception. Zen will be a good option for a lot of people, without a doubt, it just needs to launch right for people to realise that.
If they can get Zen right then I would considering staying with AMD, although I did move to the team green in the GPU dept (XFX 5850 1GB Black Edition > Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB G1 Gaming).
FX has it's place (I have a FX-8150/GA 990GXA-UD3 in my office workstation), but at the same time it was not enough of a difference for me to upgrade my Phenom II X4 on my own machine.
I hope they announce a sub USD100 CPU that is better than Fx-8320 then we are talking.
Isn't that like 28yrs in dog years?
