It's normally $2, now it's free. If you don't understand why that makes it a deal, I don't know how else to explain it to you.
When i changed one o four phones from Nodephone to Optus i just called Optus saying i wanted to join, they set up the account and sent the sim out.
With the other phone i did the same, but in an Optus store instead.
Both times all i paid was the ordinary monthly charge, never paid a cent for any sim.
Have done same in the past with other providers.
Got first mobile when i was 15, am now 35.
It's worked this way as far as i know for the last 20 years.
This is prepaid.
Rarely do telco sales people give away sim cards for prepaid.
These are just a normal SIM. There's absolutely no credit on these cards $2 cards, the charge is essentially for the packaging. Nothing pre-paid about these $2 SIM. What makes it pre-paid is the $10, $20, $30 etc credit that you recharge on it through a voucher etc.
In fact i know on an amaysim $2 SIM you can activate it and then buy credit as either post-paid or pre-paid. The SIM can be either.
@PainToad: Fair enough, only done prepaid once before and hadn't paid for the sim back then (Virgin mobile).
Didn't know paying for a sim was normal.
There's absolutely no credit on these cards $2 cards
Where did I say there was?
Nothing pre-paid about these $2 SIM.
Actually they are for prepaid. "Prepaid Mobile SIM Only"

In fact i know on an amaysim $2 SIM you can activate it and then buy credit as either post-paid or pre-paid.
And if this was a sim for amaysim, this fact would be relevant.
if you register to $2 days, you get 500Mb data and unlimited calls/sms for 1 day
@easternculture: But does this SIM actually have $2 credit on it or is $2 the price of the piece of plastic and silicon chip?
if you register to $2 days, you get 500Mb data and unlimited calls/sms for 1 day
No you don't, these "$2" SIM cards come with $0 credit.
But does this SIM actually have $2 credit on it or is $2 the price of the piece of plastic and silicon chip?
The latter.
@Scrooge McDuck: Thought so. Last time I got a free one from a Shell servo it was only good for getting Optus Perks.
Worked for me a few months ago
What was the credit balance on your account after activating it?
$0 but it gave me one FREE day
I think it's mostly for the cost of making the packaging such as glossy cardboard and that it needs to be displayed on a store shelf. That's what the $2 charge is for. The SIM card itself has $0 credit.
@PainToad: Optus gives free replacement sims if you have lost yours and also happily activates all $2 Sim cards free in all their stores. This is for all prepaid and postpaid customers, Sims are essentially free but to hold onto a active number, it'll cost you $30 per 6 months.
Can you share how you get it for free? Because if you get it for free then that makes your "deal" better than this so you should post it up
As per the above post, i just called and opened an account.
Was not aware that what i was getting was considered a bargain.
what if you need different number?
what if you relatives from overseas come to visit you and need a sim?
what if you need free burritos?
what if you need $X credit from X (uber, deliveroo, vaniday, etc)?
I've never paid for a sim card as far as i can remember.
Anyone able to explain how this is a deal?
Not trying to be an ass, just really don't get it.
I've never paid for a SIM card either.
It's a deal (only just) because you can't usually get an Optus SIM without paying for anything. You can from other Telcos though.
For someone trying not to be an ass, you're doing a damn fine job.
Can not believe i get 19 negative votes for having a completely genuine query.
This teaches me that from this day forth i can't trust the voting system as it weeds out genuine innocent posts.
Prepaid and being on a plan are two different things.
If you're joining a contract and paying bills monthly, it's not free.
Prepaid SIMs work without joining a plan, and aren't really given out for free.
For example one could use this free SIM to only receive calls for a few months before expiring, your free SIMs will require payments through this time. See the difference?
Has they fix the rooted phone fail to open issue yet?
Probably not because I don't think they perceive that as a "problem"
Not even Magisk could get around it. More secure than Android Pay…
Has you fix your grammar yet?
pretty sure both offers have been around for a month now.
The sim no
What's a "large slurpee light"?
They're normally $1 for a large now anyway.
Yeah and I wish they'd stock more zilched flavours. Often the only barrel with zilched is sold out.
good for signing up for app deals and getting freebies
Well, I downloaded the app but didn't sign up. I can see the offers and the bar codes.
You don't have to sign up, I think it's tied to your phone itself.
Yes! I've been waiting for this deal. I've been wanting an Optus sim so I can sign up to Optus Perks. Cheap movie tickets and cricket pass come at me! Thanks EC :)
Should probably write the full name of the app (7-Eleven Fuel).
these optus sim lying all around coles n woolies everywhere. even outside the shop. no one cares if you pick up one. assume no one watching
so you think stealing is ok
Apparently he thinks it, assuming no one is watching sort of thing.
Taking without paying is theft.
I think it has to be scanned through the register before it will even allow an activation. The thing itself is useless otherwise.
Besides taking without paying is theft.
A criminal record for $a $2 SIM.
Good luck with that
u grub
if you really can use it for one day with no credit as per @easternculture, get the Guzman Y Gomez app and activate with that new mobile number for a free burrito
And über
The free burritos are still available?!
how does the app work to prevent multiple claims?
I guess if you are a vaya customer you can port out from vaya to Optus and Port back in to take advantage of their new promotion! I will do that for my wife…
great deal mate. so many useful things one can do with a different phone number.
Lots of these sim cards have short expiry date printed on the packages, some even dated back on 1 Nov 2016. Not sure if you have to activate these sim cards before their expiry dates???
You do; which is why stockpiling them isn't so useful.
Don't quote me on it but you might be able to get a few weeks grace period after expiry.
I have regularly activated SIM cards that expired over 6 months ago. Maybe I'm lucky and should start eating expired food too
Here's what I've learned about SIM pack expiry dates from reading OzBargain:
Optus SIM pack expiry dates are like a best-before date. Many people have reported that activation still works after the expiry date. So don't throw them away just because the date has recently passed.
Telstra SIM cards have a hard expiry date, like a use-by date, and I've seen multiple people report them as being expired around 2 weeks before the expiry date, requiring visits to stores or using live chat to get rectified. So don't leave activating Telstra SIMs too late.
Vodafone SIM packs don't have an expiry date, so they avoid the whole issue.
To everyone who thinks $2 Sims actually costs $2, They are free at any Optus store. You can go inside any Optus store and ask for a $2 to be activated and they'll activate them for you as long as you have some ID like a driver's license. The real cost is holding onto a mobile number which costs $30 for 6 months, you can use this $30 for any type of credit you want. So after every $30 recharge, the number will last 6 months from that recharge.
Can I use this to sign up for Optus Perks?
Am wondering about that too and how long the expiry would be if you didn't put on $30 recharge.
I did that earlier this year with a free SIM from Shell servo deal. I think the number expires in 6 months.
I wanted to send the link to my overseas friend who's visiting for a bit and needs a sim card, as I recommended him the $2 a day prepaid on Optus. However when I click on it I just see a bunch of stuff about the 7/11 Fuel app but nothing about a free sim card? So can someone explain to me or point me in the right direction…
Wouldn't it be better to buy one of those cut price starter kits as this SIM has no credit?
Isn't the minimum something like $30? They're only here for less than a week so they need no more than $20 in credit using the $2 a day Optus prepaid plan. So a $0 with a $15 top up would be cheaper?
I don't know if they are still active but there were deals like $30 kits for $15, which gives you $30 value for $2 less than your plan.
Total: $0.00
Lol. "This app cannot run on a rooted device due to potential security issues"
WHAT issues? It's a freaking 7-11 app..
would i be able to receive an sms on this sim without recharging?
Yes, for 6 months after activation cause that's how long the number lasts.
thanks
so this cane be used for that free burrito from guzman.. i think
Just got one when passing by 7-11 Chatswood Mall. They guy was acted as if I had just killed his dog.
Wouldnt have gone out of my way to get one but why not get a free sim while I'm around there
hi guys, so have this free sim card and though might register for Optus perk. However I can't find the phone number of the package am I missing something? I don't want to put any credit on it and just wanted to use it for optus perks only while it lasts….sim expiry is in 2018 but can't find the Phone number.
