          isn't it PEBCAC

        • @jibupaul:
Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard.

What does your PEBCAC stand for?

        • @pax:Problem Exists Between Computer And Chair.

        • +1

@jibupaul: points to the same "Problem" anyway.

        • @pax: exactly :-) ,thanks for the new info.

        • +2

I'm with pax on this, although switched to PEBKAC. Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair.
PEBCAC is incorrect, the "Problem" may have a faulty keyboard.

        • @jibupaul: why would 3 people neg you for being correct? Incredible!

  • -8

it was 60%-80% plus an additional 15% (so 75%-95%) last weekend and i could only manage to find a few little things at canberra.

    • +14

It doesn't work like that. It was 15% off the discounted price.
      So 66% to 83% off

    • +11

it was 60%-80% plus an additional 15% (so 75%-95%) last weekend

This explains why our maths rank in the world is dropping so fast when even basic calculations are too hard.

Isn't Canberra always empty anyway? :P

      • I was at the Canberra Airport store today. Jack all left.
There's paneling for kitchens, benchtops, cans of paint (they arent mixing colours so you better be happy with basic base colours), garage shelving (components only, and not all parts available), mouse traps, bits and pieces of curtains, and other crappy bits. Nothing of real note… its pretty much all gone. I doubt they have enough to last till the 11th Dec or whatever it is as a planned last trading day.

    What is left?

Don't waste your time and petrol. Cost you more than bargain.

      Good, less competition for me.

  • +11

I went there the other day, and saw this outdoor bench I liked. I asked the sales assistant for a price, and he told me it isn't for sale. They said it's just for customers to sit on.

I came in two days later, and saw it gone. I asked another person why it was gone, and they said another sales assistant had sold it to a customer for $18. Definitely would have been $400+ new.

    Urgh.

    • +57

The sales assistant you spoke to bought it, brother. You got Mastered.

      • Had a similar experience with a pressure washer "missing parts" that all seemed to be accounted for, was told they were having a rep come in to match the parts up from all the items they had left and leave ones that they could sell, to come back in a few days to see what they could sell, come back 2 days after and it was gone. I got Mastered :(

      • I think they deserve it, they are losing their jobs thanks to woolies

    • I saw the one at my local, but it had a "property of Grays Online Auction" sticker on it

  • +1

Bought about $500 of wood there the other day for $70. There isnt a huge amount of stuff left but there is still some bargains.

    • +1

This is what I'd do if the nearest Masters weren't 4 hours away :(

    • Yep, wood is a great price. Just need to get a trailer.

      • Lots of wood stains, treatments and polishes as well.

    • But wood can be grown for free?

      • +1

        time is money

  • Wish I knew someone that worked there that could have "lost" some stock in a back room somewhere to be discovered now. BOOM full set of hitachi powertools 90% off haha… though I guess that would technically be fraud of some kind.

    • +4

I think a lot of the power tools were bought back by the suppliers so as not to damage the band value.

      • Didn't realise they did that.

        • There was talk about it but I didn't see any evidence of it, maybe stock still in the warehouse but not off of the shelf.

        • @tryagain: If the product hasn't been paid for - in other words the invoice is x days overdue; the company don't own it and the owner of the product who hasn't received payment has the right to collect it. It's more about getting payment for the products than protecting the brand.

  • Still worth returning to. But only if you are creative with what's left.

  • Went to my local masters earlier this week as I needed a few things, surprisingly they had everything I needed (bolts, screws, paint etc) but stock, and the effort staff are willing to put in is getting extremely low. Looks like they have pretty much given up on putting a price on most items now.

  • +1

I was stuck behind someone who had purchased a piece of wood which wouldn't come up on the system. They spent a good 10mins trying to figure out whether it was 90cm or 120cm as one was in the system the other wasn't. Price difference was approx 30cents. They seriously called 3 staff members to investigate!!! Towards the end I said why don't you just give this POS away?? The whole thing is a couple of bucks, are you people for real?? The response was, oh sorry the store is in the hands of the liquidators now, we're not allowed to bend the rules LOL. Shook my head and walked off…. and missed out on my $2 set of clothes pegs. Such a loss.

    • +5

The thing is they wasted waaaay more in wages getting 3 other employees involved. Retail is so backwards.

    • +2

Guess they sold out on the measuring tape

    • I said why don't you just give this POS away??

Totally goes with your username lol

      • Just walk out and dont pay. Not like they have resources to take you to court

  • Thought I'd try a different store. There was some good things if I needed them. Bed posts, doors, etc.

I then went to Bunnings and it was way busier. People not even going there when there is a sale.

    • +4

That's been the Story of Masters since it opened.

    • +2

in syd they're all located out west. why drive 80 mins?, incl. the return trip, when there's a bunnings 3 or 5 mins away.

  • +2

go around this morning, no much things left and no stock for everything you need

I tried hard buying something but failed.

  • +2

I was at the Hawthorn East one on the weekend, there really isn't anything left apart from a couple of doors, recharge solar light batteries and some paint. The rest was just junk or broken stuff.

I feel for the staff though, they were always going out of their way to help me before the closure was announced, best wishes to them.

    • I went about a week ago and the staff were still really cheery and helpful - even though more than half the store was completely empty and roped off. Hopefully they get moved to another WW store.

      • -3

Hopefully the pimply faced brats get fired

      • Yes some were good, but very hard to find and it always occurred to me when I used to visit masters, that good people must be hard to find
But you can tell that at bunnings they have pep rallys in the morning
Sometimes that smile is more like a grimace, but their trying

    • They'd have to pay the staff anyway because they would have contracted them to stay on until they close. If they close earlier - then the liquidators are making that decision.

Along with the corrupt ACC themselves, who we pay to do a job which they clearly have never done. All-the-while pretending to act on our behalf while a few insiders take bribes to allow such fraud. Now pretending to be champions of competition because we have all been taken to the cleaners, retail-wise.

If only they would all collapse.

    • +8

You mean the ACCC? They do what they can, they can only operate within the law, they don't write the law, which very few people understand. I don't think Woolworths in going anywhere and I don't want them to, can you imagine the prices at my local Coles where I shop if they disappeared.

Wanting them to collapse is a little odd, why would you want thousands of people out of a job, seriously have a think about your comment. Look up the word schadenfreude.

I can already see Bunnings lifting their prices now they have pretty much zero competition.

    • +1

lol yeah Australia would be so much better if Woolies collapsed and thousands lost their jobs, along with the flow on effects and competition was further reduced.

      • +3

And then another international firm could step into WW shoes! /s

I'm all for competition, but let's not call for the downfall of the Australian business to get it.

        • +1

I'm all for competition, but let's not call for the downfall of the Australian business to get it.

When we were kids playing Monopoly, the cheaters would ruin it for all. This isn't Australian Business. This is fraudulent business built upon decades of fraudulent business, predatory practices and so forth. Which has caused decades worth of harm to those that play by the rules.

The coillapse of a cheater is not something that we should be discussing as a net loss, but a net gain. The parent company doesn't care about playing by rules, ethics or morals. They care much less about Australian Business.

        • Isn't Woollies from south Africa?

        • +1

          @hardya:
          No, that's a different Woolworths

        • @hardya: Australians aren't very original at naming grocery and department stores. Woolworths has nothing to do with the Woolworths in the UK. Target in Australia has nothing to do with Target in the US. Kmart in Australia has nothing to do with Kmart in the US.

      • lol yeah Australia would be so much better if Woolies collapsed and thousands lost their jobs, along with the flow on effects and competition was further reduced.

lol yeah, Australia is so much better off with 2 big players and thousands upon thousands of jobs already lost due to the monopolistic, illegal and predatory practices employed by these two at the expense of the many smaller businesses who weren't big enough to play dirty.

Any gaps in the Big Two being dead will be filled by smaller players, as they should be. A net gain for jobs, not loss.

We have already lost. It's only now with our supermarket prices (for instance) being amongst the highest in the world where we have the climate for real competition to come in and change the market, which the ACCC is pretending to care about, only because now it makes economic sense for them to accept bribes from new players.

    • +1

"Along with the corrupt ACC themselves, who we pay to do a job which they clearly have never done"

      • Yep they've never done it. They've never fined anyone, never taken any company to court.. their whole website is empty - no enforcement action taken.. ever. We basically have no competition or consumer protection regulator.. we must be one of the worst countries in the world when it comes to measures of success in these areas.

In fact there's plenty of evidence that the ACCC insiders are taking bribes on the regular.

Also it will be great for competition when Masters collapses, and would be even better for competition if Woolworths collapse. The less players in the market the more competition.

      • -2

In fact there's plenty of evidence that the ACCC insiders are taking bribes on the regular.

Indeed there is. The contracts with major shopping centres will be the first place to look. How was this allowed? How is it only now they are considered 'bad' for competition? Decades ago they weren't?

They do just enough to get the muppets to keep quiet about their taxes being siphoned off to yet another toothless corrupt gov department, enriching themselves at our expense. Token amounts to keep the Muppets quiet. Thinking that things are being regulated when all the meaningful anti-competitive behaviour is allowed, costing us billions while any money they recover is a tiny sub-percentage of what they gained.

Slaps on the wrist for all.

        • +1

By that lovely comment I'm going to assume you don't believe alternative theories (also known as the truth).

        • @Gershom:
Yes, professional help is definitely needed for anyone that actually cares enough to investigate 911 and the millions of deaths resulting from the liars and war profiteers who made it happen - which we continue to pay for - in dollars and lives.

I can guarantee you wouldn't have this attitude if you personally felt the effects of the so-called 'War On Terror' up-close and personal. It's easy to be disconnected and in our little cocoons (yet we still pay for it).
