How is this better than free alternatives such as Google Maps?

    • Improved data quality, though you will not notice too much difference nowadays.

    • In my personal experience, using between Google Maps and TomTom Go, I am pretty sure Google Maps doesn't have extra features such as safety cameras and provides very basic navigation system. I guess each to its own.

      • you need to try Maps again then.
Google Maps provides all that, shows how much traffic's on the road, traffic warnings, accidents etc. Its really good.

        • +3

Good, does the google map show your current speed, road speed limit, speed cameras ?

        • @John Kelvin:
ah, that I have never looked at as I have never wanted those functions (speed etc I turned off on my old tom tom)
functions I do like are telling it a business name and navigate to it, no need to know the address. I also like the integration with the phone so an address for example i seached for in Google, pops up in Maps

          BTW, I didnt neg you.

          @John Kelvin:

You can use on Android at least an app called Velociraptor that will overlay speed limit and current speed on any app you want and it will automatically start with the app. It's pretty good.

          @John Kelvin:

Google Maps doesn't show all that.

Once upon a time the driver was responsible for monitoring their speed and the speed limit. If you are monitoring these two factors well enough, no need to monitor the third.

          @John Kelvin:

If you want those (e.g. speed camera warning), just use an app called "Waze" (completely free too), its now owned by Google if I am not mistaken. So will be almost as good if not the same as Google map. Users can also constantly update hidden camera location to let others know and road condition warning. Think it as a Google map with social function twist.

Only drawback I can think of is it drains a bit more battery than Google map.

        • @bagachin:

Waze does not use the same traffic sources as Google. Also I believe it sources traffic data only from other Waze users, which in Australia I think are rather limited.

When I tried Waze, it would route me some weird back streets. I much prefer Google maps.

        • @constipated: Waze is good in urban areas where there are a lot of users. Driving in rural areas does not have the user base, and usually isn't required.

The back street routing can get a bit annoying, but is usually the result of it reading the road ahead for congestion. Sometimes it does it because it thinks it's the fastest way to get to your destination.

Waze is owned by google, but I believe that their maps are not directly tied into google maps. From my experience as a map editor on Waze, the data, for Australia anyway, is pulled from government sources and from drivers using a road that is previously unknown or changed.

Upside for Waze is it does everything and more than TomTom with real time updates on traffic and potential issues and police locations. Downside is that you need an internet connection for it to work.

    • The previous app had no data to download (after the app download), which made it useful for when there is no reception or there is a limit on downloads. It also gave speed limit and current speed. It is also more robust in navigation planning, but at the same time its easier to find stuff by names (i.e. Bunnings Sydney) in google. I don't have this app (I am staying with the old one as it has no subscription) so it may or may not have any of the same features. Also, can google maps do multi point routes on phone?

I do use google maps as it's easier at times but long distance driving TomTom has always been better due to no need to download anything and better planning on route

      • Google allows you to download maps for offline use. Hidden somewhere but definitely there

        • Speed? Multiple 'via's, and alternates?

        • It's a bit cumbersome. You can choose an area to download, but you can't download the entire country's map.

    • google maps uses data. This does not.

Also TomTom are the pioneers of satellite navigation

Love my TomTom ONE XL, but on my phone I'm pretty content with HERE Maps - and Google Maps now that it's got offline maps.

  • +1

Yeah, nah. Think I'll just keep using Waze. Works out cheaper that way.

  • Yep they all seem to use the same crappy map data.

  • The file size is huge isn't it? And can't install onto SD card…

  • ok so i have tomtom gps unit. when updating map (connected to my laptop) i can see it has like 3GB free space.
can we use them for something? like running unofficial apps?

  • How much is 3 years? Do they stack if you already have a year?

    • Yup, you can stack them, I tried and it works.

      • Do all your devices get the subscription or just the one you purchased it on?

        • As long as you logged into your TomTom account and paid the subscription, it will be tied to your account and works which ever phone you logged onto.

        • @cloudie9: Is TomTom account separate from Google Play account?

        • @lostn: Yup, it is. You are paying to TomTom via Google Play Store. Subscription can be found within the apps itself, under Upgrade button and it will connect to TomTom server, you should see the 1 year subscription for $14.99 (-50%) option. Then proceed paying via Google Play Store.

  • Interesting. I prefer Sygic myself for a perpetual life-time upgrade and license for $60 world wide.

Google maps are great but if you need offline and features like speed limits then Nokia maps are free and very good.

"Save even more if you pay via Bill my Telstra Account if you have the half price Telstra pre-paid $30 starter sim card sitting around, which works about AUD7.50/year!"

Needs an old Telstra prepaid account as new ones don't get GP credit I believe.

Used a bunch of my wife's credit to buy a few years worth. Used to have this on iOS before they went subscription based.

    • Most Telstra prepaid plans still got Google credit.

        See the note dated 23/08

Only grandfathered plans have access to Google Play Credit. If you have a starter kit lying around, it only gives you Google Play Credit if applying it against one of the old plans.

        • +1

If you have a new prepaid package and sign up data plus you can still get Google credit. I just did it a few weeks ago.

        • @arctan: Ok, my bad. Thought Telstra had stopped it on all new activations.

        • @arctan: Data Plus has been replaced with Data Plus II which doesn't have the google credit.

But you can still use Simplicity and get your credit.

I still have more than 10 left that I purchased for $5 each. I can get 2 years for $5.

    • I activated mine on long life plan so no issues for me.

      • how did you do that?

  • Can I pay for this subscription and then move it over to car's builtin factory tomtom gps? They want $100 a year for that one.
