What's the fstop range then please?

          @amts:

Don't be put off by the seemingly slow aperture of 6.3.

It seems it might be Nikons new DX long end aperture seen also on other lenses eg. 18-300mm

        • @amts:

Slow AF… and I'm not referring to the Auto Focus..

  • This work with the D3300?

    • Yes though you may need a firmware update (to the latest)

      • How about a D3100? (My firmware is still from when I bought it)

Edit: I read below and looks like a no go.

        Thanks

        • +1

It is indeed a no go.

It is however always a good idea to check your firmware every few months as there are regular updates which improve or add features.

          http://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/index.html

When you look at your firmware within your menu you should have:

          Firmware
          A:Ver.1.02
          B:Ver.1.01

          Distortion control data
          Ver.1.009

or so it appears according to the linked site.

You can ring Nikon for help although there are instructions within that site link.

    • I have AS-F DX 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens (that I hardly used) for my D3300, so I think this one should work with it too.

This is the standard price for this AF-P lens.. The original 499 lens you are comparing with is the AF-S lens which is compatible with FX cameras too.

    • +1

      Incorrect.
You may be thinking of the non VR version
The cheapest this has been is $400 at camera house.
I know, as I bought mine there some weeks ago.
As for any comparison, for the limited cameras that offer full AF-P compatibility, this is the go to lens.
It is both lighter and faster focussing than the AF-S FX version as well as being sharper at the long end where the FX is a little weak.

Oh didn't realise there was a vr and a non vr version.. Thanks for clarifying..

        • Your welcome

  • Be aware there are limited cameras that have full compatibility with this lens.

    From memory they are D3300, D3400, D5300, D5500, D5600.

Cameras that have partial but not full compatibility are: D7100, D7200, D500

    Others are incompatible.

I had to buy a D3400 to utilise this lens as it wouldn't focus on my D7000.

Its blisteringly fast to focus on compatible cameras.

It doesn't come with a lens hood nor sock unlike all the previous Nikon lenses I've bought.

    • What do you think of AS-F DX 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens and D3300 camera? I bought that one for my camera, but have tried it once and haven't used it after that. Not sure about their full compatibility and speed, since I hardly used even the camera itself.

        Note: AF-S, not AS-F.

        • You're right. It's AF-S, autofocus single mode. I've actually made the same error in another comment above, and just have copied and pasted the mistake again here without checking.

          @AussieDaddy:
The S stands for silent wave motor.
The P in the new lenses stands for pulse stepper motor.

I'm sure the 55-300 is a fine budget lens.

My research led me though to believe the AF-P better suited my needs.

I lack an eloquent and diplomatic style of communication so I'll offer up the link to the review I found most helpful in determining my purchase choice:

        • Just read about AF-P lenses and watched some youtube videos. These lenses are great for video. Hoping Nikon will bring an AF-P wide angle FX lens soon.

        • Ta. Will check that out later.

  • Amex offers is expire.. does not take any more credit cards….

  • $299 at Ted's Camera too.

      incorrect

Thats the non VR version, which is what makes this such a bargain

      • You are correct. My bad.

I wonder if, like the picture Harvey Norman used, this is a pricing error and they meant to list the non-VR version. Otherwise this is a really nice price - the cheapest in the world I can see at the moment and considerably cheaper than U.S prices even before the exchange rate is considered ($472 Australian at B and H photos for example).

Bought one anyway hoping it is delivered as described. Thanks OP.

  • I am not big Camera fans, but just wondering, how it is different than https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/Lenses/nikon/nikon-af-s-dx…

    • Did you read the review I linked to above?

Thos explains it in some detail

  • would this work with D90?
    thanks in advance!

    • Sorry but no.

  • This is such a great buy, I went and grabbed another one.

    Thanks OP.

For anyone wondering what does not work on D7100/D7200

    • VR is always on and can't be switched off as there is no manual switch on the lens and no menu setting on the body either.
    • If the metering timer expires, the camera will need to refocus when brought out of standby.

    From https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3990013

    Also:

    • Looking at the MTF charts this lens will be very slightly less sharp in the center but sharper elsewhere compared to the FX version.
    • Smaller may mean it hits diffraction limit slightly faster someone suggested. I don't know enough about the body to comment.
    • f/5.6 vs f/6.3 may not seem like much and in some ways it's not, but if you're struggling for light every bit counts.
    • Some say this is faster focusing than the AF-S. AF-P should be capable of that. But I haven't found any sports or wildlife photographers talking it up. Could be too new. Could be that you lose the advantage putting it on a lower end body.

Back at $298 for this keen for one.
