  • Really good price once the redemption comes through. If I didn't already have this camera would go for bundle the one with the kit lens. I found this to be an excellent travel camera.

    • can you comment on the image quality, say vs enthusiast compact like the rx100?

      • depends which lens you have on the em10 mk2 to and which model of the rx100 you are comparing to.

The newer rx100 has a wider aperture, than the kit lens on the em10. However the em10 has a larger sensor. Without doing the serious maths, they probably work out to be similar with the new rx100 being a bit letter on the telephoto end (zoomed in).

However throw a good prime lens on the em10, and that's a different story. The em10 will probably be better.

      • Nope….because I don't have an rx100 to compare it to. There are plenty of reviews out there though. I bought this camera to fit my needs - I wanted a small and light camera with SLR like capabilities. This (at the time) had the best balance for what I wanted at a price I was willing to pay.

  • Anyone tried oly body's with panny lenses? This looks like a nice upgrade over my gx1 lol.

    • olympus bodies will work with panasonic lens. Which lens do you have?

      • Nothing fancy. A 20mm f1.7 prime and a 45-200 mega OIS.

        • Works perfect. I think you may get slightly more purple fringing in high contrast scenes, but that's generally removable. I have four pany lenses (including the 20) with this camera, which is awesome btw.

can anyone comment on whether the kit lens combo is the EZ model?

  • Amazing camera and a bargain at that price bought it with the 14-42 EZ lens from the Good Guys $829 deal.

  • Beautiful cameras

  • Looking to downsize from our Nikon D5100 on our next trip as have to take a baby as well. Ideally only 1 lens this time, is the kit lens the one to go with?

    • +2

Depends on budget. Kit lenses are…passable..if you're a point and shooter. If you're into a good photo I would get a good piece or glass. I nearly always keep my 20mm prime on my camera. Super bright, super sharp.

      • +1

I agree the kit lens is passable but the not the best. For the price it's decent. If you want a good zoom f2.8 zoom, you'd be looking at the 12-40mm, but that gets a bit more hefty on the EM10.

I'd say get the kit lens, since it's only an extra $150. And get yourself a 25mm (50mm equivalent) prime lens.

        • +1

Except if you value having a little wider lens (and reportedly a little sharper), see my comment below.

      • The panasonic incipient?

      • The 20 1.7 is awesome. Admittedly the auto focus is a little slow and noisy. Sharpest lens I have for MFT though.

        • Ugh yeah the AF is very annoying sometimes. Piezoelectric motors are much better.

I was looking for something with faster focus, but I'm considering a move to the Sony a6000 or a7…but so expensive!!

          Edit: Yeah the Panasonic 20mm.

  • +1

If I buy body only, what's the best lens to get?

    • +1

Depends what you want. What type of lens are you after? There are so many options in Mft which is great.
For ultra small zoom I'd go pany 12-32
For ultra small prime I'd go 20 1.7
I could keep going but it really depends what is most important to you, ie size, weight, quality, price, aperture/low light, focal length, zoom range etc etc.

      • +1

Jump on the same question, i'd say the best bang for buck lens that covers the most bases. More on the wide end for landscape travel etc.

        • is it compatible with nikon kit lens or 35mm with adapter?

        • +1

Best bang for buck that's versatile would be any of the 'normal' range zoom lenses. As mentioned the Pany 12-32 would be my pick as it's super small, is reportedly as sharp, if not better than all the basic kit lenses, and most importantly it goes to 12mm, wider than pretty much all the cheap zooms (which generally go to 14mm). I almost bought it, but caved and bought the Oly 12-40 2.8 instead, which is a different beast of a lens.

As someone mentions, the kit lens that is available for this camera will do the job fine too. Also agree that getting a prime would be good. Other than the ones he listed, the pany 20 1.7, pany 42.5 1.7 or Oly 45 1.8 are all good too.

      • Both of these are panasonic lenses?

        • The ones I listed, yes. That's the great thing about MFT you can use either brands lenses.

    • +2

As my reply above, I'd suggest getting the kit lens for an all-rounder, but get an prime lens as well. I'd consider either the panasonic 15mm 1.7, olympus 17mm 1.8, panasonic 25mm 1.4, panasonic 25mm 1.7, olympus 25mm 1.8.

Out of the above mentioned, the panasonic 25mm 1.7 is probably the most affordable. The olympus 25mm 1.8 is not too badly priced on the used market either.

      • Why the 25mm over the Panasonic 20mm 1.7?

I can't seem to find many places selling the Panasonic 12-32 to get instead of the kit lens. And not sure i'd miss the longer end. Currently have the 2 kits lens for the D5100 (18-55 and 55-300) and then the 35mm prime 1.8f.

So current lens coverted to FX
        27-82.5, 3.5-5.6
        82.5-450, 4.5-5.6
        52.5, 1.8

        If got this options are
        Kit 14-42, 3.5-5.6 - eq 28-84 ~$150
Panasonic 12-32, 3.5-5.6 - eq 24-64 (can't see the lens separate anywhere, only as the kit lens with the GF8)
        Panasonic 20, 1.7, eq 40 ~$419
        Panasonic 25, 1.7, eq 50 ~$239 (not a pancake lens)
        Olympus 17, 1.8, eq 34 ~$540

        • Yeah it is hard to get the 12-32. I think digidirect might have it but it's pretty expensive. I was close to buying one for a bit under 200 2nd hand on ebay.

        • @Dan83:

I think something wider than the 14 would suit me, I always wish I had something wider than 18 on the DX when we saw the northern lights.
Then trying to pick a prime to partner which ever zoom I go with is just as hard. Have contacted the seller to check that it is the EZ kit lens as well.

        • If those are the current prices I would go for the 25 1.7 rather than the 20. In its favour it's faster focusing also.

        • @kulprit: Yeah wider is good. There are other wider angle lenses for MFT but then things start getting expensive. It's a shame there are not more normal zooms starting at 12mm.

        • I forgot about the 20 1.7 on my list to be honest. But it does focus a bit slower than the newer lenses.

You can also consider the olympus 25 1.8. It's smaller and a bit sharper than the panasonic 25 1.7.

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Olympus-M-Zuiko-Digital-25mm-f-1-…

With coupon code you can get it for $$360. Less if you buy it used.

        • @hazwing:

Yeah all the prices I quoted are not including the 20%. Plus hopefully TRS.

There is also the Olympus 17mm 1.8 for $540, but i think this is too much.

The camera really has to balance between being our travel camera, and the camera that will take a million photos of our children.

The 25mm would be a nicer portrait lens, but not as helpful travelling. Plus its quite a bit larger so not really pockatable on the camera which is what we are hoping something now that one of us will have a backpack full of baby gear, and the other carrying the baby in a carrier. But it is almost half the price.

          So if i go with

Body Only - $449 (20% off and cashback)
Kit - $569 (20% off and cashback) - makes the kit lens $120

          Then lens (with 20% off)

          Olympus 17mm f/1.8 $432
          Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 $295
          Olympus 25mm f/1.8 $359
          Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 $191

Although none of these give me any wider or more zoom. I very rarely put the 55-300 on the D5100 though. Especially as the idea of buying into a new system is to carry around less lens and weight as described above.

        • @kulprit: For that price, getting it with the versatile kit is tempting. For wider angle stuff you will need to make a panorama…

Re the primes, if size is a very big factor (which it sounds like it is), you can't really beat the 20 1.7. My partner has the 25 1.7 and it is noticeably bigger than the 20, not much heavier, but it makes it far less pocketable. They both have some pros and cons. I guess at the end of the day you can't go too wrong.

        • @kulprit:

Well there are lenses that will give you wider or more zoom. The lens selection is so mature, its just a matter of cost, size, and quality. If you want something wider but still relatively small and a fairly usable walkaround focal length, you could try the olympus 9-18mm. Second hand around $400-500, but pretty expensive if bought new. There are a whole range of superzoom and telephoto zooms, if you need them. They are smaller than your nikon equivalents, but not very pocketable.

The size of the olympus 17mm 1.8, panasonic 20mm 1.7 or the olympus 25mm 1.8, are all relatively small. Ditch the lens hood and throw on a high quality UV filter if you want to keep things dimunitive.

This is a example of the size difference between your nikon with the 35mm vs olympus with the 25mm 1.8

@hazwing: Thanks Dan83 and hazwing, have both been super helpful. Going to drop into Teds tomorrow and check it out in person while I wait for the seller to reply.

The camerasize website is very helpful to look everything. I also went and stood with the 18-55 and took a photo from the same spot at different focal lengths to see where I like things to be. I do see the 12 as being very helpful, but might still miss the longer end a bit.
For the prime I think wider does suit me better, especially since most work is landscape. But the 25 is exactly the same as my 35 and takes a great street photo/family photo. I know i could just crop the images from the 20 as well. Decisions decisions.

        • +1

          @kulprit: You're welcome!

Good luck. Like I said, you really can't go too wrong. Lots of good choices. Happy to answer any other questions.

      • +2

I find that even the 20mm is quite wide sometimes, harder to take shots of people at a reasonable distance and frame them well. The 15mm would be a challenge. Also the depth of field gets quite small at low f stop and low focal length.

I'd favour the 20 or 25 as a more "jack of all trades" lens. Very much personal preference however.

        • I'd agree. If you only had one prime lens, a 20 or 25 would be my pick.

In the past for lightweight travel photography I've tended to carry my Pany 14 and 42.5. It's a great combo. But if I was limited to one, I would take my 20.

    • +1

i think the EZ 14-42 is very versatile lens which most will be happy to stay with. if you want more zoom then get the 40-150 Olympus which is about $200.

      • +1

Alternatively, the 35-100 f4-5.6 Pany zoom, which you can get new on eBay for around +/- $200. Not as much zoom range or as long, but quite a bit smaller and lighter nd doesn't have the plastic mount of the Oly.

        • Just looking at the longer end now. Weird that buying the 40-150 in the kit puts the price up $300, but buying the lens on its own is an extra $200.

Found the 12-32 panasonic for about ~$250 (but no warranty as from south korea) - makes it about twice the price of the kit 14-42 and might have the problems on pana on olympus body (purple fringing etc). But does gain normal mechanical zoom rather than electronic.

Also the panasonic 35-100 is about $300. Loses a bit on the top end (not where i'd use it most) but pairs well with the 12-32 if i go panasonic lens all the way.

Finally, panasonic does have a promo running where you get the 25mm for free, but none of the cameras are on ebay included in the 20%. Also not sure many have an EVF.

Are any of the issues of running pana lenses on the oly bodies really that pronounced?

        • @kulprit: I haven't noticed anything, besides a bit of purple fringing. But not sure how much better that is with oly lenses anyway, as it's a common minor issue with just about any lens. FWIW I have 4 pany lenses, 1 oly, and an oly camera. I'm not put off by pany lenses at all.
I just bought the 35-100 for 212 new. It's also sold around 180 new on eBay (silver version) but I wanted black.

        • @Dan83: Where did you manage to find the 35-100 for that price? Can I ask what all your lens are? And I guess while I'm here why to go with the M4/3 over the APS-C from Sony?

Went and had a play today. Quite happy with the body. Also looked at the Pana GX85 which is nice as well. Usually too much, but currently includes the Pana 25mm 1.7 for free. Still overall would be much more I think.

On the kit Oly 14-42 I don't really like the electronic zoom although could get used to it. Also the Oly 40-150 is much larger than the Pana 35-100. I think I could give up the extra 100mm FX eq to get the smaller lens and the mechanical zoom on the panasonics. Along with that comes a bit more cost though. Also I feel the point of lens change at 32 to 35 would be a range I might use a fair bit.

Had a look over all my photos from the last trips, and over a third of all photos are shot wide open. (at 28mm ff eq). Although another 12% are shot at full zoom on the kit lens 55mm (82.5mm ff eq)

At the most about 10% are shot at a 50mm ff eq (my 35mm prime). This is only exact shots. I guess anywhere 5mm either side of this could easily be achieved by walking? ie. my current prime is the 35mm (50mm eq). If i check the shots 5mm either side, from 30 to 40

At the over 300mm ff to 450mm ff (where the pana 35-100 wouldn't reach) is about 3% of shots.

It seems maybe the Oly E-M10 body, with Pana 12-32, Pana 35-100 and Pana 25 1.7 are the go. I get mech zoom on the kit and wider. I get a smaller longer zoom lens (with less length). Downside is price and the lens changeover range.
And I get the cheapest prime, although I comprimise on size a bit and maybe not my ideal focal length, but one I'm used to. It has faster focus than the 20mm, and is half the price or even more of the Pana 20, Oly 17 and Oly 25

        • @kulprit: Here's the link for the $180 one. They are removed from the camera kit, that's why they are new but not in the retail box. Mine is black, and was bought from a different seller. Cost a bit more but I wanted black. Let me know if you want the link to the one I got, it definitely looks new!
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/272042627730?_trksid=p2060353.m14…

          My lenses are:
          Pany 14 2.5
          Pany 20 1.7
          Pany 42.5 1.7
Pany 35-100 f4-5.6 (bought only recently)
Only 12-40 2.8 (bought only recently)

RE the Sony cameras, I actually answered someone else's question on this just below.

          I wouldn't worry about a gap between 32 and 35 at all, it's nothing.

We all generally tend to use both extremes of a zoom range the most. Good to see you don't use the very long end of your telephoto zoom, supports getting the little Pany.

Spot on RE your consideration of the 25 and 20.

        • @Dan83: thanks Dan.

It wasn't the gap between the 2 and 35, but more where it occurs. Ie at 42 I can get a bit longer before I have to change lenses.

I had another play today too. Definitely like the pana kit more. I don't think I'd really manual focus with it ever anyway.

Current idea is buy a pana gf8, get the 12-32 with it and the free 25.

Then buy the oly e-m10 with kit. And the pana 35-100 separately.

Then I'd have what I want, and a totally Ray gf8 with the oly 14-42 on it, for about $300 if I want to sell it.

I think I really have to wait another 2 weeks though. make no sense to miss TRS refund. Just gotta hope for another sale.
Both the oly $150 cashback and pana free 25 promo run till January.

        • +1

          @kulprit: No worries!

The lack of manual focus on the 12-32 was one point I didn't like. I use manual focus a lot. But the lack of a mechanical zoom on the Oly wouldn't be much fun.

One last minor annoying thing to note- the Oly and Pany zoom rotation is opposite. Pany rotates the same as Nikon.

If it all works out at a good price, sounds like a great idea! Good luck with it, let me know how you like it once you've got your kit.

        • @kulprit: Hey saw this deal posted which might suit you… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/278939?utm_source=searchal…

        • +1

@Dan83: Thanks Dan. Its the 14-42 lens rather than the 12-32 :(. Plus gotta wait til December 2 for TRS. I think JB have the GF8 for $600 that will come with those 2 lenses.

  • +1

    Awesome price btw. Great camera.

  • Is this a good camera for beginners?

    • Are you interested learning how to get the most from the camera? Are you likely to change lenses to make the most of the "camera system"?

If not, might be better off just buying a quality point and shoot.

      • Thanks !

Deciding between a quality point and shoot or camera phone like a Google Pixel, thoughts?

        • By quality point and shoot, I referring to a point and shoot that has at least a 1" sensor. I don't know much about the google pixel, but a quality point and shoot should do better than a camera phone in low light situations. However during the day with plenty of lighting, you might not notice as much difference. The files in a quality point and shoot, should be more 'flexible' for post processing if you shoot RAW. I doubt most beginners would bother with this though.

        • -2

@hazwing: if i were you, once i saw him bring up "camera phone like a google pixel" into THIS discussion, i would just shut up and would not waste my time on him again. and nah, i dont think he knows what RAW means and let alone post process.

        • +2

          @aec:

          Sorry for being a beginner.

    • i am a beginner, bought this and loving it. huge improvement over my Galaxy S6 phone images.

even if you stay with kit lens, this is still better than point and shoot or phone camera.

  • why do so many people buy m4/3 when sony has aps-c mirrorless around the same size and price?

    • +3

Features, build, handling, more lenses, and importantly, smaller/lighter (and great quality) lenses. Good prices on a range of lenses too. From memory the view finder in the a6000 is not that great either, but maybe the newer versions are better?

As I see it, the apsc Sony's advantage is AF tracking and sensor size.

      Both great systems ultimately.

      • +1

Thanks for the reply, was genuinely curious. I would say your right and having a larger selection of native lenses makes a huge difference. I'm pretty commited to the e mount system at this point though

    • +2

I was looking at em10 and the Sony a6000 to replace a Nikon d3100. For me it came down to the price of lenses. At the time the Sony lenses were quite a lot more expensive. I don't know if they still are. I also like the style of the Olympus better.

All cameras in this price range are good, no matter the brand. It all comes down to the system and if you might want to extend your lens collection to more than the kit one.

  • -1

I tried different approach. I had 3 Amex cards, also I am going oversea soon and bought this for my friend for his birthday.

Price match JB Hifi price at HN:

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/dslr/olympus/olympus-om-d-…

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/olympus-om-d-e-m10-mkii-mirro…

Am going to spend $900 at HN, so proportion of the credit back = ($799/$900)*$300 = $266.33
    TRS = $799/11 = $72.63
    Cashback = $150

so, spends on this cam with lens will be $799-$266.33-$72.63-$150 = $310.04 (hope i am doing the right calculation, my maths sux)

Staff at HN is very helpful to price match JB, but since HN only sells bundle & out of stock at the moment, the staff combined the body only cam (in stock) with lens (in stock). I am doing 3 split payment so the amex deal works (hopefully).

I am doing this coz I had cards and travelling. For those who don't had these may be ebay deal is better.

    • +1

I probably wouldn't add the TRS in general calculations, but that's a great price if the amex deal works. They were happy for you to split payment over three cards?

btw the photo in the harvey norman link suggests it's the normal 14-42 lens, and the pancake 14-42 EZ lens. Do you know which one you got?

      • yea they allow 3 cards.
        Lens = 14-42mm II R Lens
am going to collect them tomorrow and ask about the lens, thanks for notifying!

  • +2

Interesting how Harvey Norman has their price at $988 with the OLD style of 14-42 lens. Would also be interested to know what lens they gave you??

I bought from Good Guys at $829, with the new EZ lens. Just claimed price guarantee against JBHIFI $799 right now. I think that was still a good deal with the $100 bonus store credit included.
