    These look so outdated.

    • Speakers dont really date

    tis about the sound ;)

  • I swear JB's offerings of Audio basically never changes.

I remember looking for HT speakers years and years ago and the exact same stuff is on offer (incl. these speakers)

How are they even able to source so much of the same stuff for so long? Does it just never sell?

Speaker technology moves slowly, if at all. I have a set of speakers made by my dad with Kef drivers in it. They're about 40 years old. They still sound as good now as the high quality speakers you can find today.

A good amplifier and a good set of speakers can last you decades - far longer than the flashy "latest technology" gear you often get today. "Latest technology" usually just means blue LEDs, the ability to connect via Bluetooth or something that's going to be incompatible with whatever you buy in a couple of years - not something that people who just want to listen to good quality music will be bothered about.

This is true. I have old Jensen speakers from 10 years ago which still blow anyone who listens to them's mind.

I used to work at JB Hi Fi around 5 years ago and we sold these - in my opinion they sound pretty ordinary, far too bassy, but to each their own.

      • I have 30 year old philips 3 yea with 12" drivers …..go down to 28hz ……. sound better than what JB currently sell, same with my old kefs.

It seems now days it's not about the brand but what range in the brand ….. like with klipsch, etc …..

    • They stock the newest receivers which have Dolby Atmos yet no JB HIFI in Australia stocks the atmos speakers…

Man, the older the speaker, the better it sounds, especially when hooked up to a tube amp. Bought a pair of TDL(s) that was made from the early 90's being powered by a cheapie 25 watt tube amp. Boy oh boy, the sound that comes out of that lil' baby, like mana from heaven I tell ya.

Speakers are one of things that try to never buy without auditioning first. :)

I bought some high end yamaha bookshelves that were on a clearance sale and I've never heard a yamaha speaker before. Was I disappoined..? Hell no :)

      • I went even further and bought a couple of marantz'es from Green Shed, surprisingly all 6 speakers were not damaged, looks old but still the best 25$ ever spent :)

        • Oh year for $25 I'd take the punt. Though I did break my rule once and bought the Swan M50's for my desktop and was not disappointed either. :) (Well, I was at first but once I turned the EQ on they came to life.)

      • That said, it was $1,900 worth of bookshelves.. hehe

Looks like all Wharfedale speakers are on special. For the money the 220's are by far the best value at $329.40

These things are very well reviewed!

Just wish they had stock of the black…

      • Yes the Diamond 220's are fantastic, I swapped over my Diamond 9 and 10's for two lots of 220's in August when they had the 40% off, plus used 8% off gift vouchers. Also got a Wharfedale Diamond WH-D10 10" Subwoofer.

I picked up one set in store in white and then ordered one set in store in black that took a couple of weeks to come in. Check your store they should be able to order in on their little hand held machine at the same price and in all colours. The only downside with the Diamond 220 is that you loose the beautiful shape of the Diamond 9 and 10, the Wharfedale Reva series brings back the shape.

so is this AT-400 better or the 220s better? Does bigger the better apply here?

      • No simple answer to this. Like comparing a desktop computer to a laptop, both can be good for purpose. Bigger fuller sound, compared to lighter more detailed sound. Go listen to both, imagine them playing with your amp in your room.

Put it this way, it's not on the Wharfedale site, and it looks like something cooked up just for the Australian market.

Wharfedale don't have the greatest rep at the best of times, and off-brand are probably even worse.

        Probably still overpriced at $310

Looks like all Wharfedale speakers are on special.

      yep 40% off

For the money the 220's are by far the best value at $329.40

it's still 40% off. unless you're saying the 220's are better than the AT-400's?

      • Well we're comparing floorstanding with bookshelf here which are different types of speakers. But I would argue that the 220's are a better quality speaker than the AT-400's and therefore present better value at this price point.

  • I have the taller ones of these and they're excellent, especially for the price!

The first rule of speakers is you do not talk about speakers… you listen to them :)
I personally love Wharfedales, I'd like to think its 100% because of the sound, but I know there's more to it than that.

If you listen to Dali, Jensen or Wharfdale and like one of them over the others then go for it, this is a great chance to get a good bargain, especially if you like the sound of the Wharfedales

    • I love the Wharfedale's as well, it's all I use now in both rooms of my house except for some Klipsch KHO-7 outdoor speakers on my deck, I think Wharfedale is hard to beat for the price, sound and style. Here is a review on the 220's.

    • Is there a place for us to test them? Will JB Hifi set them up for you with a decent amp in store?

  • Any recommendation on an amp for the 220's?

Interested in quality + price over high volumes :)

  • Just bought the Diamond 220 and Atlantic AT400 - what else do I need? Amp? Cables? Any recommendations. One for my room and one for my lounge.

    • You need an amp and cables. Just go to Bunnings for your speaker cable and get some 16 gauge cable (is fine for most lengths). For an amp it really depends on what your sources will be? What are you planning on hooking up to these things?

      • Computer, TV and Phone

        • For my computer I use a SMSL SA-60
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SMSL-SA-60-60-2-TPA3116-Class-D-B…

This has 2 line inputs (back connected to computer. Front can be used to connect phone). You've just got to check that your computer has a line-out (most do).

For your living room you may be better off getting a cheap AV Receiver. Have a look on gumtree/ebay for a second hand one.

  • I have the Wharfedale Crystal 30.5 floor speakers, would this be a worthwhile upgrade or is it in a similar range?

    • A bit of research told me they're both down the bottom of their hierarchy ,I might be better saving for some Diamonds when they're on sale.

  • Ive seen some people get negged for posting about how these are not the best looking speakers, but realistically, aesthetics do come into play when purchasing speakers. These are a very brutish design, and would not fit in with every home style. I would much prefer a slim design, such as the whatmough p28 series. Each to their own. It comes down to if your setting up a bedroom, tv room or proper home theater :)

  • How do these compare to Voll B44?

  • Btw this sale is over.

I let this one pass due to being lazy. I wasn't sure whether to get diamond 220 or the Q acoustics 2020i.

I currently am just running a panasonic mini system from my PC. Panasonic made pretty good stuff in the 90's 2000's. Though now it's not as loud as I would like and too bass heavy (strange cos the drivers are 4 inch!) I am sure nowhere near as good as these speakers above I am sure.

I have an old technics hifi with nakamichi tape (from the 80's I am guessing) that I really should set up. Quite huge though.
