D-Link DCH-S150 Wi-Fi Motion Sensor - $79 @ JB Hi-Fi (Plus Receive a 2nd Sensor via Redemption)

110

Was looking for a motion detector/sensor to pair wtih my LIFX lights and these look to fit the bill.

  • Automatically turn on devices attached to D-Link SmartPlugs wirelessly throughout your home
  • Stay updated with instant notifications to your mobile device
  • One-piece wall-plug design is compact and does not require additional power cables
  • Works with IFTTT

The second is by redemption from D-Link and the barcode must be posted into them to claim.

(Thanks bamzero)

Not sure if this means it's possible price match officeworks with a cheaper price ($49 at PCCG) and still claim a second one? Will need to confirm this isn't a JB HIFI exclusive deal

  • Might want to add that the second is by redemption from D-Link and the barcode must be posted into them to claim.

  • The motion sensor only turns on D-Link smart plugs doesn't it?

I found IFTTT support and it looks like you can cook more recipes.

Must've been new feature added recently

      • +1

Just be wary of the delays with IFTTT, I know others have complained about using IFTTT for sensor lights.

      • +1

They added support for it at the start of the year. I finally decided to use my smart plug because of the IFTTT integration. Works well.

        • Thanks for letting us know! Can you comment on the delay?

        • @SevenSmurfs: Well I do have a motion sensor (one of the original ones) but I don't actually use that at the moment so I can't really comment too much on the delay. It is something I want to try so might try it out on the weekend.

I actually use the smart plug to control a light in the laundry on sunset whenever we go out and leave the dog in the laundry (since our ceiling light is not working properly).

I have Philips Hue globes coming on at sunset every day (in our family room) and they seem to work as well as the smart plug… which is pretty well.

  • So this will control LIFX bulbs only by IFTTT?

I'm trying to find solutions not so dependant on the cloud. Lost my internet for a few days (thanks Telstra for disconnecting my phone line mistakenly) and found out that all the LIFX schedules are cloud driven when they didn't turn on or off when they were supposed to.

    • Seems like it. There were only recipes cooked for Phillips hue but I imagine it pretty easy to cook one for LIFX also (my intended purpose)

      Don't think there's a way around controlling/running 'smart home' items without internet/wifi

      • Might be time to throw down some cash for a proper smart home controller I'm thinking…

  • It will auto ON and OFF?

    • Upon motion yes and it should notify me via the app as well.

That is at least what I intend to use it for.. will report back confirmation once I pick it up

      • OK, I am using a $10 motion sensor battery LED light in my Hallway. I only need to use it after midnight so the battery can last many months.

        • This item is only useful if you own a smart bulb

  • I'm interested to know what kind of setting you would use the motion sensor to trigger the light? just recently researching smart tech, so would like to know what people actually do. thx.

    • Would set the motion sensor to only activate past 6-7pm
Turn on lights when motion detected so when I get home from work/party there's no need for me to turn on the lights physically and I carry my stuff in without risk of tripping over and dying.

      That's just one scenario :)

Would also use for reactive indoor security to complement my outdoor as I can get instant notifications.

      • and how about turning it off? in your scenario, would you set it turn off say after certain amount of time?

Or you could find an esp8266 wifi module on ebay for $1.50 and a $2 motion sensor. A total of $5 to $10 would get a box etc and the same functionality. Plus you could also directly add temp sensors, other movement sensors, directly control multiple lights or latches, etc, until you run out of ideas.

    • do you have a link on where I could get started? Will it control LIFX lights?

      • +1

You can do literally anything. How easy depends on if someone else has already done something similar, or you are starting from scratch, and your own ability to learn and previous experience.

The whole DIY electronics world has exploded over the last 5 years. The big pain for the last 10 years has been to get your project onto a computer network. There were a few complex combo's of chips you could use, but they were resource heavy and required lots of programming. They were also expensive compared to the rest of the project.

Arduino has been the most popular micro controller for a while and was a perfect match when the ESP8266 Wifi modules started turning up. Now you could plug this little module into your project, and it could talk with the world. As time went by people got more tech info on the ESP8266, and low and behold, it already has it's own programmable micro controller and lots of input and outputs that could also communicate with other chips. So you can now ditch the Arduino, etc for a lot of projects.

Just in case you have missed it, we are talking pretty involved DIY. Not something you can pick up from scratch in a day, and plug in the next. A couple of weeks is possible, considering the minimum electronics involved in currently available modules that basically, plug in.

Here is a Google search using "esp8266 lifx"

Here is a Google search using "Arduino LIFX". Seems to be show results since 2014, so should be some open source projects and code available.

You will be amazed at all of the DIY uses.

  • I understand DIY home automation is not everyone's cup of tea, but these sort of setups are a rip off. One can use rpie or arduino along with sensors, led lights and some relays to setup your own smart light system. You don't even have to be an electrician for that. Plus there's heaps of online tutorials for newbies.
